Zhang Huanhou Temple is called Zhang Fei Temple among the people, but its earliest name was actually "Xianzhong Temple".

There is a legend that Zhang Fei was "buried with his body in Langzhong and his head in Yunyang". It is said that during the Three Kingdoms period, when Guan Yu was defeated in Maicheng, Zhang Fei was stationed in Langzhong, Sichuan. The generals Fan Jiang and Zhang Da were unable to return to their lives as scheduled, and they were afraid of Zhang Fei's power, so they killed Zhang Fei while he was drunk and lying down, took off his head and went straight to Soochow, and threw the head into the Yangtze River.

In the evening of that day, an old fisherman picked up Zhang Fei's head and a pot of gold while fishing. In his dream, he was entrusted by Zhang Fei to bury his head at the foot of Feifeng Mountain on the other side of Yunyang County. The pot of gold was used to invite people to gather. Poor people built the earliest temples.

Because of Zhang Fei's righteousness and bravery, he has always been respected by the people. After the temple was built, everyone would come to hold sacrifices and temple fairs on Zhang Fei's birthday on the 28th day of the eighth lunar month. Gradually, it formed a certain scale and influence, and attracted literati and refined scholars. People here also paid homage and left poems and songs, and the temple expanded again and again, getting bigger and bigger.

This is also an important scenic spot on the Three Gorges. It is a nationally protected historical building. When boating on the river, you can see the buildings on the huge cliffs on the river bank from a distance.

The building complex is shaded from the sun, and the lush green Phoenix Mountain and Pipa Mountain are based on the mountains. The buildings are built one after another. The palaces are majestic and magnificent. The green tiles of the red tower reflect the river flow, and the gull tails of fire beads make up the blue sky.

On the wall of the temple facing the river, there are four large characters "The Wind is Clear on the River" written by Peng Juxing, a famous calligrapher in the late Qing Dynasty. But the sculptures in the temple are so exquisite, especially the clay sculpture of Zhang Fei, with a leaping horse and a spear, a long beard, and wide eyes.
