With such a complicated concept of the three causes, in Tibetan medicine, the three causes are divided into two concepts under the physiological state and the pathological state.

The former are three functional substances that maintain life activities; the latter are factors that cause diseases due to changes in the constant, residence, and function of the three factors under the influence of various external factors.
