Chapter 108 "Professor, I'm enlightened!"

"Why is Zeng Guohui called Sui?"

Lying on the bed, staring blankly at the ceiling, Chen Han tossed and turned, still unable to fall asleep.

It's five o'clock in the morning.

After completing the research and interpretation of the first two paragraphs of inscriptions, Professor Li disbanded the working group, kicked everyone out of the cultural relics storage room, and asked them to go back to the dormitory to rest.

But Chen Han, who returned to the dormitory, couldn't fall asleep no matter what.

As soon as he closed his eyes, his mind was full of questions about the "mystery of Zeng Yu".

In fact, when he expressed his conjecture, but the reminder that the mission was completed did not sound in his mind, he knew that he had not solved this eternal mystery.

How can it be so easy to figure out the problem that has plagued the field of history and archeology for 50 years.

In fact, with the existing archaeological discoveries, there are already countless evidences that can prove that Zeng Sui was a country.

However, these evidences are side evidence, not enough conclusive evidence.

There is no way to explain why all the unearthed Zeng Guo bronzes have inscriptions that clearly say "Zeng" and "Marquis Zeng", and there is no word related to "Sui".

In "Zuo Zhuan", "Historical Records" and other books, the vassal state recorded is Sui State.

The old biography of "Zuo Zhuan" was written by Zuo Qiuming in the Spring and Autumn Period, and modern scholars believe that it was compiled in the middle of the Warring States Period.

But whether it was written in the Spring and Autumn Period or in the Warring States Period, Zeng Guo should still exist at that time.

In 433 BC when Zeng Houyi died, the three families had been divided into Jin Dynasty, and the Eastern Zhou Dynasty had entered the Warring States Period.

Moreover, the burial objects of Zeng Hou Yi are so luxurious, which shows that Zeng State was still in a very prosperous period at that time, at least it was not a country on the verge of extinction.

Even if the historian who wrote "Zuo Zhuan" had never personally experienced Zeng Guo, it would definitely not be far from Zeng Guo's demise.

Since he has always called the vassal state surnamed Ji who is adjacent to Chu State Sui in "Zuo Zhuan".

Then if Zeng Guo is indeed Sui Guo, there is only one possibility, that is, the people of Zeng Guo call their monarch Zeng Hou, but they call themselves Sui Ren and Sui Di Ren to the outside world.

The name here is the name of the place, not the name of the country.

For example, the place where Jin is located is called Jin, the land of Qin is called Qin, and the land of Chu is called Chu.

But Zeng Guo did not take the usual path. Zeng Guo called his fief not Zeng Di, but Sui Di.

This led to outsiders calling Zeng Guo Sui Guo.

This explains it all.

After all, "Country X" is rarely used in "Zuo Zhuan" to refer to countries, and they are usually referred to by single-character place names, such as Qin, Zhao, Wei, and Han.

The titles of the kings are all "so-and-so lord", "so-and-so king" and "so-and-so king".

For example, "Zuo Zhuan Six Years of Duke Huan": "King Wu of Chu invaded and ordered the emperor to seek success, and the army waited for him when he was weak, and he sent the young teacher Dong Cheng along with him."

The translation of this sentence is:
King Wu of Chu invaded Sui and sent Xie Zhang to ask for a peace agreement. The troops were stationed in Xia, waiting for negotiations, and Suiguo sent his junior division Dong Cheng to preside over the negotiations.

The "Xia" here is a place name. At the same time, "Sui" can be translated as Suiguo or Suidi.

Most of the records about Sui in "Zuo Zhuan" can be translated into Sui without any problem.

There is only one specific mention of the word "Suiguo", "Suiguo, Ji's surname."

Assuming that Zeng Guo refers to the place where he lives as Suidi instead of Zengdi.

In this way, it makes sense to call them "Sui" and "Sui Ren" in "Zuo Zhuan" and other history books.

Because Marquis Zeng himself called the territory under his rule any place!

Just like after the Han Dynasty, most Chinese people called themselves Han people, and called the land of China Han soil.

Including the official dynasty, they often call the land under their rule Han soil.

This does not affect in the slightest that the actual dynasties at that time were already Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing...

The more he thought about it, the more Chen Han felt that this guess seemed more reasonable.

This can also explain why "Suizhou" is called Suizhou, and why all the Dukes of Zeng Guo changed their surnames to Sui after the fall of Zeng Guo.

Because the place where Marquis Zeng ruled, where they lived for generations, is called Sudi!

As for why it is called Sui here?
You must know that when Zeng Guo was sealed to Handong, he came by airborne!

The first generation of Marquis Zeng followed the order of King Wu and led his army from the Central Plains to conquer the place where the Han River and the Xia River meet.

Thinking of this, Chen Han immediately got up from the bed, turned on the computer, logged into the official archaeological platform, and began to search for historical archaeological achievements in Suizhou.

Sure enough, he soon found a record.

In 1958, also in the Zengdu District of SZ City, a site from the Neolithic to the Eastern Zhou Dynasty was discovered!

The site is about 140 meters long from east to west, 120 meters wide from north to south, and covers an area of nearly 2 square meters!

The main culture is the Shang and Zhou Dynasties!
There are complete cities and moats!
The location is very close to the excavation site of Wenfeng Pagoda, and it belongs to the same administrative district!

This shows that Suizhou has been settled at least since the Neolithic period, and it lasted until the Shang and Zhou dynasties!
Before Nangong Shi was confiscated to Suizhou, there was already civilization here.

Moreover, according to the oracle bone inscriptions of the Shang Dynasty, there used to be a Si surnamed Zeng Guo in the Han River Basin!
Maybe in the Shang Dynasty, this place was called "Sui"!
The Ji surname Zeng Guo enfeoffed by the Zhou Dynasty may have been established on the basis of annexing this Si surname Zeng Guo!

After the annexation of the Shang Dynasty Si surnamed Zeng Guo, the Zhou Dynasty enfeoffed the Ji surname Zeng Guo, and continued to use the businessman's name for this place: "Sui"!
In this way, it can explain why Ji's surname, Zeng Guo, calls his territory Anywhere.

Because the surname of Ji, Zeng Guo, was originally an outsider. After conquering any place by force, he settled down here!

Although the upper class nobles and troops came from Ji Zhou of the Central Plains.

But the lower-class people they ruled are all locals who were born and raised here, and they are citizens of Zeng Guo with the surname Si.

In the eyes of these vast locals, this place has always been called Sui!

When Chen Han figured all this out, it was clear.

sleep?Sleep ass!

No sleepiness at all!

Even because he had cleared his mind, Chen Han was full of energy and radiant.

"Senior Brother Zhuang, it's dawn!"

"Go to the construction site to dig the soil!"

"Don't sleep!"

After closing the laptop with a "snap" and roughly waking up Zhuang Yunpeng who was sleeping like a pig, Chen Han rushed out with the computer, anxious to share his guesses and opinions with Professor Li.

Zhuang Yunpeng, who was hungover all night, opened his red eyes, looked at the back of Chen Han leaving in a hurry, and vaguely felt that he had missed something important.

Outside.

Chen Han, who was about to go to Professor Li's room, hadn't walked a few steps, but he was confronted with Professor Li who was about to come to him.

The two looked at each other, and they both saw that the other was also up all night.

"Professor Li, I understand!" Chen Han said first.

"Enlightened? What did you understand?" Professor Li was a little puzzled.

But he immediately put this sentence behind him, pulled Chen Han and walked to the cultural relics storage room.

As he walked, he said, "There are still so many inscriptions waiting to be translated and interpreted. I couldn't sleep at all, so I tried to interpret another section overnight!"

"Unexpectedly, I actually deciphered an inscription with a lot of information!"

"Go, come with me!"

"The mystery of Zeng Sui can be solved!"

"Ah?!" Chen Han turned his head to look at Professor Li in astonishment.

Has the mystery been solved?
So why didn't I get the system prompt?

Professor Li has solved this problem, so can I complete the task?
