The Laws of Werewolf Hunting
Chapter 363: Unable to Catch
Chapter 363: Unable to Catch
Charlotte and the dark-haired, green-eyed customer walked toward the shop selling rusty silver coins.
Before she went out, she actually hadn't figured out how to bring the goods back, but the seller was willing to do some manual labor for a few more dollars, which really helped her a lot.
After putting away her newly purchased goods, she said goodbye to the seller and went home alone.
But on the way, she suddenly felt that since the goods had arrived, she should inform Mr. Bello, so she turned and walked towards Bello's new house.
Sasha City is not very safe these days, but it is still safe now as it is daytime.
She was reluctant to rent a carriage, so she walked for nearly an hour and finally arrived at the Bello Mansion when it was getting a little dark. This self-contained little "manor" made her envious every time she came. She didn't know how long she would have to work to live in such a beautiful house.
The servants opened the black iron archway and welcomed her in.
The closed iron gate blocked a pair of green eyes, and the seller, who was supposed to separate from Charlotte, withdrew his gaze from behind a tree outside the residence.
This person, whom we will call the seller, was one of the culprits in the recent Dongsen Bank robbery.
Although he and his accomplices had surpassed many of their peers in criminal skills, he was still a novice in the sale of stolen goods. However, he was not lacking in vigilance. Although Charlotte's shopping indicators did not completely overlap with the stolen goods he brought to the antique shop, he still instinctively felt something was wrong.
Some people will choose to stay away after sensing a crisis of unknown origin, while others are confident of their abilities and are determined to find out the source of the crisis.
The seller is the latter.
An iron gate and a high wall could not stop him, so he retracted his gaze and walked into the bushes on the side of the road.
After a while, he appeared from the side of the wall, jumped up and grabbed the top of the wall, then rolled down. The black iron anti-theft spikes pierced his skin, but he didn't seem to feel any pain, and his face was relaxed when his feet landed on the ground.
There were not many people outside. He felt the flowing wind and walked towards the back door of the big house with confidence.
The scent of the woman just now filled the corridor. He listened to the sound and avoided the servants who were doing cleaning work as if he had foreseen it. Everything went very smoothly, but the uneasiness in his heart became more and more intense.
He followed the scent of the woman to the hall on the first floor. He carefully leaned against the corner and listened. Three people were talking.
"Mr. Bello, some of the goods have been received, but I am a little worried," the woman said.
A deep male voice asked, "What are you worried about?"
"Mr. Justin said these might be stolen goods, and I think so, too, because the seller marked them too cheaply, but they look very well maintained."
"Don't worry, we're buying stolen goods," said another younger man. This gave the seller a clue. He moved quietly and tried to put his ear closer.
"So you brought the stuff?" the young man asked.
"I left it at the store." The woman asked again, "Julius, what do you mean?"
Their relationship seems to be at odds.
"It means exactly what it says. Are you..."
"Shh—" The man called Mr. Bello suddenly gave the order to keep quiet, so the other two people stopped talking, but he didn't speak again, as if he was waiting for something.
After a few seconds, Mr. Belleau said, "Charlotte, did you bring in the guests?"
The "seller"'s body tensed up.
"No, I came alone," the woman replied.
The sound disappeared again.
Then a strong arm suddenly stretched out from behind the corner and grabbed the seller's clothes. He screamed wildly, struggled with all his strength to break free from the hand, and rushed towards the window.
With a crisp sound of glass breaking, his figure completely disappeared from the window.
Clayton walked out of the corner with a grim look on his face, with only a khaki coat left in his hand.
Julius followed out and also saw the big hole in the window.
"He ran away?"
This man has what they want and is secretly following Charlotte, so his identity is self-evident.
"I remember his smell," Clayton said. He took a few steps, but then stopped and looked at the clothes in his hands.
The style of this dress is unusual. It is made of a rough cloth that is very strong. There are many laces and folds on it. The folds can be unfolded and changed in size by adjusting the knots on it to adapt to the wearer's body size. The man just untied a few straps to make the originally tight clothes loose, and then he found a chance to get out of it and escape from Clayton's grasp.
The design and the materials used in the clothes were both utilitarian, which is why they looked strange to Clayton.
He suddenly unfolded the clothes and put them on himself. The man just now was considered tall, but not as tall as him. After loosening the straps and enlarging the size of the clothes, it fit him perfectly.
Yet it could still be widened. Clayton unfastened all the adjustment straps, and it eventually reached a size that was impossible for a normal human to have.
He had a guess in his heart - perhaps this was clothing designed for shapeshifters.
Charlotte then came out of the hall and looked in surprise at the broken window.
Clayton had no intention of explaining anything to her, but instead had something for her to answer.
"Charlotte," he asked, "what was the last person you saw?"
The one who came to assist Creighton was Roderick the Mansisi, a member of the Presbyterian Church who had just returned from abroad - although he called himself a Mansisi, he also had Dornish nationality.
Roderick was appointed to be in charge of a new base in St. Benilde's Parish because Des Jorrad wanted him to be Clayton Bello's liaison. The old man seemed to think that their similar blood would make them close. This whimsical approach made Clayton almost suspect that Elder Des was his former superior in the army.
But Roderick was still a respectable man in Clayton's eyes.
When Clayton approached him, he was writing a manual of operational rules and had also compiled a batch of information to hand over to Clayton.
As soon as he heard that Clayton needed help, he stopped other work and rushed to assist with his subordinates.
After much questioning and searching, they gradually approached the seller's location and noticed that he was moving towards the train station. When they were ready to make the final arrest, it was too late.
The train dispatcher saw such a man boarding the last train alone.
Clayton sighed on the platform.
He thought the other party was not acting alone, and had no idea how many accomplices with extraordinary powers this criminal had, so he asked Roderick for help. This delayed him a lot of time. If he had chased him at that time, perhaps he could have caught the other party.
Although a batch of stolen goods from Dongsen Bank has been recovered, this is only a small part, and the things that Elder Dais gave him have not been received yet.
Failing a mission was a small matter, but he didn't like losing things.
"It's okay. We've done our best," Roderick said, comforting the others. "Once Elder Grogne is back in charge of affairs, we'll have other ways to restore the reputation of Dongsen Bank."
"He has this ability?" Clayton asked.
Hearing this, Roderick was surprised: "Don't you know? Elder Grogne has a deep relationship with the Druids. He is one of the chief priests of the Urban Fusion Sect. Naturalism and Classicism are his natural allies, and many of the advocates of these two doctrines are rich people. As long as he can find more partners willing to deposit money in Dongsen Bank and invest in our urban transformation plan, our troubles can be solved now."
Clayton understood now. He looked at the empty track below the platform and said, "It seems that I was worried for nothing."
"No such thing." Roderick said seriously, "Every little bit counts. Thanks to you, at least we can confirm that the identity of the person who robbed Dongsen Bank this time is extraordinary. There must be enemies of the Elders involved."
He picked up the clothes from the hand of the person next to him.
"These clothes are not made by newborns for themselves. The design is very mature, and at least one family of shapeshifters is involved. Perhaps it is the extreme conservatives among the druids who think that the Urban Fusion Sect is a heretic who abandons the worship of nature and a coward who compromises with man-made objects that blaspheme nature, so they have been making trouble."
"They held several demonstrations in the city center before, demanding that we shut down all the factories. Akzi drove them all away, but maybe they are still brooding over it. They even joined forces with the Doomsday Seekers to cause trouble for us."
Roderick said these words without reservation, which made Clayton doubt the effectiveness of the principle of confidentiality.
Perhaps because the Dark Moon is getting closer, there have been more and more strange rumors recently, and people no longer make a fuss about these weird things. The station staff on the platform just glanced at them and turned back in boredom.
"I don't think so," said Clayton, who got a familiar feeling from the man.
Sellers have a kind of arrogance and recklessness that comes with strength, which is a temperament that can only be given to people by many victories.
Clayton himself has this temperament.
The old-school druids sound like a group of hermits living in the forest, and their only means of fighting against the Elders is a parade. Their members don't seem like people who can cultivate such a temperament.
"I'm going to Berdalabik soon, and I'll pass through Viodi there." He suddenly said to Roderick. "There are some of my kind in Viodi too. I heard that they don't get along with Elder Dais. Could it be them?"
Roderick thought for a moment and said, "I don't know much about the situation in Wei'aodi, but it's not too close to here. Besides, there will be casualties when the wolves go out. This robbery was too peaceful. No one was injured. This is not the style of your kind."
Clayton nodded and didn't insist.
They walked out of the deserted train station at night, and before saying goodbye, Roderick suddenly called him again. "If you want to build a safe house in this city, please don't consider going to the sewer."
"What's going on?" Clayton asked.
"Nothing. It's just that Elder Fisher's offspring multiplied too quickly and he couldn't use up all the materials for the rituals. So he planned to keep some of them in the sewers, which would also allow him to dispose of waste. However, given the nature of ghouls, they still prefer to eat meat."
Clayton was stunned for a moment: "How many descendants does he have?"
"About two hundred. When Elder Fisher was young, he sacrificed the wisdom of all his descendants in order to gain power. Therefore, these monsters cannot think or communicate. If you are attacked by them, do not hold back." Roderick said lightly.
