In February 1960, Ilyushin proposed the design of the Il-2, and on January 62, 1962, Khrushchev inspected the first Il-1 prototype.

The Il-62, along with the Boeing 707 and DC-8 of the United States and the VC-10 of the United Kingdom, was a representative of jet airliners at the time and was collectively known as the "four pioneers" of jet airliners in the world. Although the Il-62 was introduced slightly later than other models, its take-off weight and engine thrust ranked first among similar models, making it the first long-range large jet airliner in the Soviet Union. The improved model Il-62M that was subsequently launched further improved its economic performance.

The Il-62 is very quiet, with only a faint low rumble that makes people aware of the powerful engine thrust. When entering the atmospheric turbulence layer, passengers can hardly feel the turbulence, thanks to the flexible wings that effectively absorb most of the load caused by turbulence.
