The original vows in the Honganji Temple refer to the 48 vows of Amitabha Buddha, and they especially promote the No. 18 vows "ten recitations of this life wish".It is written in it that "even ten thoughts, if you do not give birth, you will not attain enlightenment." It can be roughly understood that people who are devout and faithful to the Buddha can be reborn in the Pure Land, otherwise Amitabha Buddha will not be in the Land of Ultimate Bliss.

The ten thoughts here are also very easy to achieve as a standard of devotion. There is no need to build a grand building like the Phoenix Hall of Byodoin Temple to worship Buddha, or even to recite complicated scriptures.

Because one thought means to recite the name of the Buddha in one breath without any distractions until the breath is exhausted, and ten times means to recite ten consecutive breaths without distracting thoughts. As long as you do it without any delusions, you can become a Buddha. The illiterate poor can do it even if they work hard, how can the Pure Land Shinzong not be strong.

Pure Land Shinzong was the only sect that could marry a wife and have children before the Meiji Restoration.

Of course, the main reason is that the Pure Land Sect’s practice method of chanting Buddha’s name to go to the Paradise of Ultimate Bliss is too close to the people. Among the monks who want to fast and take precepts in China, the Pure Land Sect is still the mainstream.
