Chapter 591: Divine Chapter
"If you have anything to say, please speak directly."
Qin Shi Huang was still very fond of Meng Tian, and immediately waved his sleeves and said, "Stand up!"
"Thank you, Your Majesty!"
Meng Tian stood up and said in a deep voice: "Your Majesty, I, Meng Tian, have a share in the Juxian Hall. If the Juxian Hall is convicted, Meng Tian will naturally also have a share."
"Is this true?!"
Frowning, Ying Zheng glanced at Yi Huawei.
"Your Majesty, if Juxiantang had the intention of treason, why did they surrender without resistance during the roundup? Treason is a capital crime anyway, and anyone would fight to the death. Isn't it strange that they surrendered without resistance? Obviously, Juxiantang had no intention of treason at all. As for what Zhao Gao said about Juxiantang colluding with the rebels,"
Meng Tian turned his head and glanced at Yi Huawei: "He is the one who wants to frame the prince!"
Yi Huawei ignored the look Meng Tian gave him and stood aside with his hands hanging in silence.
"Zhao Gao? Do you have any explanation?!"
Ying Zheng's eyes were as fast as lightning as he swept across Yi Huawei's face. Seeing that he looked calm, his doubts were immediately reduced.
"Your Majesty! I feel that General Meng's words are biased."
Yi Huawei bowed and said: "Let's not talk about whether Juxiantang has the intention of treason for the time being. According to the 18th Qin Law, those who commit treason will be beheaded, and their parents, wives, and siblings, regardless of age, will be abandoned.
It is only natural for them to surrender, right? If they dare to resist, not only will they die, but they will also bring trouble to the three clans. According to what General Meng said, if someone plots rebellion, they will be innocent as long as they surrender, right? "
"Um?!"
Ying Zheng nodded and turned his gaze to Meng Tian.
Meng Tian's heart skipped a beat, and he knelt on one knee and said, "Your Majesty, I have absolutely no such intention!"
"Your Majesty, there is something I don't understand. I would like to ask General Meng for advice. I hope Your Majesty will grant me permission."
Yi Huawei calmly bowed to Ying Zheng.
Ying Zheng nodded: "Yes!"
"General Meng, you said I framed the young master? When did I ever say that the young master would rebel? The young master Fusu is a very loving and filial person, and everyone knows it. How could he rebel?"
After a pause, looking at Ying Zheng who was smiling, Yi Huawei continued:
"General Meng is not in Xianyang, so some hearsays should not be taken seriously. I have a question. Since it is called Juxian Hall, as the name suggests, it is a place to recommend talents for the crown prince and the court?
But as far as I know, the Juxian Hall is full of Confucian scholars who talk about nothing. Are Confucian scholars the only ones who can be called virtuous? Haha, this is really ridiculous. These people who are so greedy for money are talking about morality all the time. Who in the world is not driven by interests? No matter how beautiful the words are, they can't cover up the ultimate goal of these Confucian scholars. Isn't their goal to grab fame, wealth and power?
In my humble opinion, it is understandable to work hard for fame and fortune, but judging from the intentions of the Confucian scholars in the Juxian Hall, they have already regarded the prince as a stepping stone to enter the court. In order to exclude dissidents, they have bewitched the prince and wanted to make a move to dominate the country! They should be punished! ! "
As soon as the voice fell, Meng Tian was speechless and didn't know how to refute, while Li Si and others looked at Yi Huawei in surprise. However, Yi Huawei's words touched their hearts, and they nodded frequently.
Although Ying Zheng had a blank expression on his face, there was a hint of kindness in his eyes when he looked at Yi Huawei.
Ying Zheng valued the Legalist thought. In order to achieve great unification, he reused Li Si. In order to build the Qin Empire, he took drastic measures.
But why did Qin Shihuang, who disliked Confucianism, invite the great Confucian scholar Chunyu Yue to be Fusu's teacher?
In fact, at the beginning, Qin Shihuang's overall attitude towards the various schools of thought was open-minded. Among the works of the Hundred Schools of Thought collected in the "Han Shu Yiwen Zhi", there are four chapters of "Huang Gong" and five chapters of "Cheng Gong Sheng" by the famous scholar, as well as one chapter of "Lingling Lingxin" by the strategist who dared to "challenge Qin Xiang Li Si", and four chapters of "Yang Zi" by the Confucianist. Among them, Yang Zi and Huang Gong were doctors who served in the Qin court of Qin Shihuang.
Xunzi once visited the State of Qin and expressed his opinion that Qin was good in every way, except that "it lacked Confucianism, which was Qin's shortcoming."
Therefore, after Qin Shihuang unified the world, he tried his best to recruit Confucianists to join the government, to rectify customs for him, and to establish a new etiquette system related to the emperor; he also followed the system of Qi and Lu in the late Warring States Period, set up doctoral officials, and let scholars from all schools of thought (mainly Confucian scholars and alchemists) participate in the discussion of state affairs, thus forming a senior advisory think tank group to encourage academics and serve politics.
In other words, Qin Shi Huang wanted to use all schools of thought and treat Confucianism with courtesy at the beginning. However, as the dispute between Confucianism and Legalism in the Qin Palace intensified, some people even appeared to favor the past and despise the present, and even ridiculed the emperor. Finally, Qin Shi Huang changed his mind. His favorite book, Han Feizi, said: "Confucians use literature to disrupt the law, and knights use force to violate the law. The ruler treats both with courtesy, which is the reason for chaos."
In his opinion, these Confucian scholars were still too hard to tame! "Taking over the world's soldiers" was not enough, but ideological disarmament was necessary. So, with the cooperation of Li Si, Qin Shihuang began to abolish private schools, exclude Confucian scholars, and establish magic as the only ideology of the empire.
Although Legalism was born out of Confucianism and their thoughts initially had some similarities, as the embryo grew up, it became increasingly anti-Confucian. Because Legalism and Confucianism have irreconcilable contradictions in ideology, they are destined to be unable to coexist harmoniously.
For example, the Confucian fragment "Six Virtues" unearthed in Guodian Chu Bamboo Slips says: "For the sake of your father, you must abandon your ruler; for the sake of your ruler, you must not abandon your father." It also says: "Father, son and husband are the inner part; ruler, minister and wife are the outer part."
The Yu Cong says: "Friendship is the way of ruler and subject. If you are not pleased, you can leave; if it is unjustly imposed on you, you should not accept it."
The Book of Rites also says: "A father is kind, a son is filial; an elder brother is good, a younger brother is respectful; a husband is righteous, a wife is obedient; the elder is benevolent, the younger is obedient; the ruler is benevolent, the minister is loyal. These ten are called human righteousness."
It can be seen that the Confucianists of the pre-Qin period always regarded family ethics and personal freedom above the monarch, and even "the monarch's benevolence" was above "the minister's loyalty", which was fundamentally contrary to the Legalist idea of the supremacy of monarchy and social control. (Note that it is the Confucianists of the pre-Qin period, not the Confucianists of the Han Dynasty)
As the heir to the empire, Fusu could understand the "book burning", but when Qin Shihuang began to "kill Confucian scholars", Fusu finally couldn't stand it. Although many of those who were killed were alchemists, there was a lot of overlap between Confucianism and Yin-Yang School during the Warring States Period, Qin and Han Dynasties. The Qi School of Confucianism emphasized the interaction between heaven and man, and was very good at playing with the Yin-Yang and Five Elements.
Dong Zhongshu, a Confucian master in the Han Dynasty, was even very good at weather forecasting and praying for rain to stop it, which was quite effective. In short, the distinction between alchemists and Confucian scholars was not very clear at that time. Historical books also called them "literary alchemists" or "scholars", which shows that they were the same group of people. So Fusu felt sympathetic to these scholars and made a straightforward remonstrance: "All the students recite Confucius. Now the emperor is punishing them with severe laws. I am afraid that the world will be in turmoil."
Qin Shihuang was furious and began to regret letting Fusu come into contact with those hateful Confucian ideas. He decided to send him away from Xianyang, which was full of all kinds of people, to the border of the empire, to serve as a military supervisor with Meng Tian, and experience life.
Meng Tian was proficient in military strategy and legalism, and had great achievements and far-sightedness, so he was deeply trusted by the First Emperor. He believed that he could train Fusu into a qualified successor who was resolute and courageous, yet kind, filial and steady.
Indeed, with the help and influence of Meng Tian, after several years of fighting outside the Great Wall, Fusu quickly grew into an outstanding general who was resolute, brave, and trustworthy. He was brave and good at fighting, and made many military achievements, which deeply comforted the heart of the First Emperor. His generous, kind, and humble style of treating people won him the support of the majority of soldiers and civilians.
In fact, Qin Shi Huang sent Fusu to guard the Great Wall with Meng Tian, which was a very smart move in politics. All the great emperors in Chinese history would take great pains to make sure that their affairs after death were properly arranged. The Meng brothers were the pillars of the empire and the people Qin Shi Huang trusted the most.
Meng Tian was a general, commanding the most elite troops in the empire, and was deeply loved by the army and civilians; Meng Yi was a senior minister, serving the emperor every day and serving as an important official in the court. The two brothers were loyal, and even a traitor would not dare to look down on them. So Qin Shihuang's move was equivalent to placing two heavyweight assistants behind him who were loyal, held military power, and were highly respected. With their support and the support of the army, Fusu could ascend the throne very smoothly.
But man proposes, God disposes... "..."
I didn't expect Zhao Gao to be so sharp-tongued today. Meng Tian gritted his teeth and bowed, saying, "Your Majesty, I want to impeach Zhao Gao, the Minister of the Imperial Chariots. Please sentence him to death!"
"I have read the laws and regulations, but I don't know what crime I have committed." Yi Huawei sighed and bowed, "Your Majesty, please make a decision!"
Ying Zheng nodded and looked at Meng Tian:
"Why do you say this, my dear?"
"Your Majesty, Zhao Gao is a middleman..."
Meng Tian stood up and looked at Yi Huawei with contempt: "As the Minister of the Imperial Chariots, you are a eunuch. Prince Fusu once advised that eunuchs should not interfere in government affairs. Zhao Gao was originally going to be punished, but Your Majesty was kind and let him go, ordering him not to interfere in matters outside the palace. However, Zhao Gao took advantage of the fact that the prince and I were not in Xianyang and no one in the court dared to oppose him, and relied on his power to interfere in matters outside the palace, causing an uproar in the city. People all over the world thought that the second Lao Ai had come again.
Your Majesty, Zhao Gao has two crimes!"
Meng Tian looked at Yi Huawei with deep pain and disgust, and said in a stern voice:
"First, they violated the law and disturbed the government. Second, they disobeyed the order of His Majesty. This is the crime of deceiving the emperor and they should be torn into pieces by five horses!!"
Meng Tian's powerful voice echoed in the hall. The entire hall was silent. All the civil and military officials and Ying Zheng looked at Yi Huawei.
"Haha~, Your Majesty, General Meng has already stated my crimes. It is true that there is no shortage of excuses for accusing me. May I allow this humble official to refute me a little?"
Yi Huawei glanced at the indignant Meng Tian and was speechless. Why bother? I didn't step on your tail. I just cut off your brother's brother. Is it necessary to do this? And you even tore him apart...
If it weren't for Meng Tian's thick eyebrows and big eyes and his loyalty, Yi Huawei would have been lucky to walk out of the Xianyang Palace alive today.
In the past, Yi Huawei regarded Meng Tian as his idol. As the first person to fight against the Huns, Yi Huawei still had some admiration for him.
In 236 BC, the Yunzhong County in the north was occupied by the Qin State, and from then on, the Qin State took over the task of defending against the Huns.
At that time, Ying Zheng's main energy was focused on destroying the six kingdoms. Since there were no extra troops to deal with the Huns, Ying Zheng ordered to focus on defense, and the brave general responsible for defending against the Huns was Meng Tian.
It took Ying Zheng 16 years from the destruction of Han to the destruction of Qi. During these 16 years, the Qin army went eastward to fight against the six kingdoms, but Meng Tian's army in the north pointed its bayonet to the north, defending the northern border in an all-round way. In spite of the wind and rain, he remained unmoved. Because in Ying Zheng's strategy, Meng Tian's army was the capital of Qin's defense.
In 221 BC, Ying Zheng unified the six kingdoms and finally had time to deal with the other two major enemies.
"On the Overthrow of Qin" says: "In the south, the land of the Baiyue was taken and made into Guilin and Xiangjun... Meng Tian was ordered to build the Great Wall in the north to guard the frontier and push back the Xiongnu for more than 700 miles, so that the Hu people did not dare to go south to graze their horses...
Although the land of Baiyue was complex in terrain, it was slightly weaker in strength. With veterans such as Wang Jian in charge, it was easy to defeat. The most troublesome was the Huns. The Huns were too mobile. They would fight if they could beat them, and run if they couldn't. In addition, the grasslands were vast, and if they went deep into the hinterland, they would need strong logistical support. In order to attack the Huns, Ying Zheng prepared for 6 years. In 215 BC, Qin Shihuang sent Meng Tian as a general and led an army of 30 to attack the Huns.
Meng Tian carefully planned this war. His objectives were: first, to drive out all the Xiongnu who had invaded the Longxi Hetao area and the former Zhao territory; second, to make all the territories east of the Helan Mountains and the Langshan Mountains belong to Qin. Third, to build the Great Wall as a linear stronghold for long-term defense.
To this end, Meng Tian divided his troops into two groups. One group started from Shangjun (Suide, Shanxi) and sneaked into the northern part of Hetao; the other group started from Beidi County (Qingyang, Gansu) and entered Xiaoguan and went to the south of Hetao.
Meng Tian first sent a small force to pretend to be defeated, luring the main force of the Xiongnu to the Hetao area, and then attacked from both the north and south, wiping out the Hetao area in one fell swoop. Before winter, Meng Tian led his army to retreat southward, and when spring came, Meng Tian quickly led his army northward, with one army attacking Langshan and another attacking Helanshan. The Xiongnu encountered the Qin army everywhere, were defeated everywhere, and were so timid that they had to flee northward.
Meng Tian chased the Xiongnu all the way and drove them to the northern sea area (Lake Baikal). In the following years, the Xiongnu people shuddered at the mention of Meng Tian's name and dared not go south to herd horses anymore.
Meng Tian defeated the Huns by relying on his outstanding military command ability and perseverance. The difficulty of Qin's attack on the Huns was no less than that of Wang Jian's conquest of Chu.
Regarding Meng Tian's brilliant attack on the Xiongnu, during the Han Dynasty, Emperor Zhao of Han once commented: "When Meng Gong served Qin, he drove away the Xiongnu like a bird of prey chasing a flock of sparrows!"
Emperor Zhao of Han meant that Meng Tian chased the Xiongnu like a bird of prey chasing a sparrow. When Wei Qing and Huo Qubing of the Han Dynasty attacked the Xiongnu, they basically followed Meng Tian's strategies and ideas. Meng Tian can be said to be the person with the highest achievements in fighting the Xiongnu in the 5,000 years of Chinese history.
For Ying Zheng, the so-called world is far more than just annexing the "Six Kingdoms". Only after conquering the Huns in the north and the Baiyue in the south can Ying Zheng achieve the world he wants.
"Records of the Grand Historian - Biography of Meng Tian" says:
At that time, Meng Tian's power was so great that the Xiongnu people were shaken. The First Emperor respected and favored the Meng family and trusted them. After Meng Tian's great victory, the First Emperor trusted the Meng family even more. Later, Meng Tian did two great things for the First Emperor:
First, the construction of the Qin Great Wall. The "Historical Records" records:
The Great Wall was built to take advantage of the terrain and to control the dangerous terrain. It stretches from Lintao to Liaodong, stretching over 10,000 miles. The significance of the Great Wall to the farming nation is self-evident.
Second, the straight road was built, which can be regarded as the earliest expressway in China.
He sent Meng Tian to open a road from Jiuyuan to Ganquan, crossing steep mountains and filling valleys for a distance of 1,800 miles.
The straight road was compacted with hard soil, and no grass grew for thousands of years, which is a miracle. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, Qin Shihuang's straight road was still in use. Looking at the history of China, the only thing that can be compared with the straight road is the Grand Canal.
Meng Tian occupies an important position in Chinese military history. However, his ending was very tragic. After the death of Qin Shi Huang, Hu Hai and Zhao Gao seized the throne and sentenced Meng Tian to death. Before committing suicide, Meng Tian sighed to the sky and said:
"From my ancestors to our descendants, the merits and achievements of the three generations of Qin have been passed down. Now I am leading more than 300,000 soldiers. Although I am imprisoned, my power is strong enough to betray us. However, I know that I will die and I will uphold my integrity. I dare not disgrace the teachings of my ancestors, so as not to forget my predecessor."
Meng Tian's words are worth pondering. What he meant was: Starting from my grandfather Meng Ao, three generations of the Meng family have made great contributions to the Qin Dynasty. The Meng family has an army of 30. Although I am in prison, my power is still enough to overthrow the Qin Dynasty. But I will die with integrity and dare not humiliate my ancestors.
From Meng Tian's last words, we can know that although Meng Tian's death was caused by the persecution of Zhao Gao and others, it was because he did not want to resist. If Meng Tian led his troops to rebel, the Qin Dynasty might have ended earlier. Perhaps, it was precisely because Meng Tian had this ability that Qin II had to kill Meng Tian and the Meng family as soon as possible.
So... your idol wants to kill you now, what should you do?
Of course, hit it back!
