Chapter 983 The Beginning

At this time, a "color revolution" was taking place in Ukraine.

On February 2014, 2, the Ukrainian parliament removed President Viktor Yanukovych from office.

In fact, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine has been seeking to join the European Union and accept the protection of the United States and the West. For this, they have also accepted many harsh conditions and "disarmed themselves."

This is understandable, as the disarmament of Ukraine, especially its "nuclear weapons", is basically tacitly agreed upon by the five permanent members of the UN.

Otherwise, after the disintegration of the Soviet Union, Russia inherited its permanent member status in the United Nations, then what about Ukraine? They also have nuclear strike capabilities... You can't add a permanent member.

As for Ukraine itself, they did not want to maintain many of their weapons and equipment, including nuclear weapons - after all, the maintenance costs of these weapons were extremely high, which would bring heavy financial pressure to Ukraine at the time.

It would be better to use this as a condition to exchange for a "neutral" status and some conditions that are favorable to them from the United States and Russia.

Since then, Ukraine has been seeking to join the European Union.

However, in November last year, the Ukrainian government suddenly announced the suspension of signing the Association Agreement with the European Union and resumed consultations on the Customs Union led by Russia. The reason was that the Ukrainian President Yanukovych at that time could be regarded as "pro-Russian". He was born in the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine, where the Russians are the majority and it is the base of pro-Russian forces in Ukraine.

In addition, another reason is that the Ukrainian government is in financial difficulty at this time, and it needs to pay huge natural gas fees to Russia and repay debts to the International Monetary Fund. Therefore, the government decided to restore trade relations with Russia in order to conduct corresponding negotiations.

However, this decision of the Ukrainian government naturally aroused dissatisfaction among pro-European factions in the country. As a result, the pro-European opposition gathered in Independence Square in Kiev for demonstrations, which later evolved into violent clashes.

"This time, the 'Square Revolution' was planned by the CIA. In that square, there were color revolution experts sent by the CIA to direct the protests..."

Barron was not surprised at Nigel's words.

After all, since the Arab Spring, and even before that, the CIA has accumulated rich experience in such "revolutions" time and time again, and the whole process can be said to be very familiar.

These "experts" provided detailed tactical guidance to the protesters, many of whom were from extreme right-wing organizations in Ukraine with strong neo-Nazi colors, such as how to make Molotov cocktails and tactics to fight the police, and also provided funds to ensure that these protesters had uninterrupted drinking water and food...

Nigel Inkster also said:

"They also added a 'white powder' to the protesters' drinking water, which was used during the Arab Spring protests to reduce the protesters' perception of danger and fear..."

Of course, in addition to the secret "technical support", in order to put pressure on Yanukovych and prevent him from suppressing the protest forcefully, many American and European congressmen, politicians, and even the US Assistant Secretary of State went to the square to protest in person to "stand up" for the protesters and cheer them on.

On December 2013, 12, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland arrived at Independence Square in Kiev to distribute food to protesters and cheer on pro-Western protesters.

On December 12, pro-Western figure and former Georgian President Saakashvili visited Ukraine to express his support for the protesters. From December 7 to 12, US Senator John McCain and US Senate European Affairs Committee Chairman Chris Murphy visited Kiev and met with opposition leaders in Independence Square to support the opposition.

On January 2014, 1, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Ashton arrived in Kiev and met with the leaders of major Ukrainian opposition groups and representatives of protesters in Independence Square.

In early February, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle visited an opposition protest camp while traveling to Ukraine to attend a meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

On February 2, US Assistant Secretary of State Nuland visited Ukraine and met with three major opposition leaders.

It can be said that you finish your performance and I come on stage...

"This time Russia's response was too slow..."

"That's normal. After all, he had illusions about America before. But when he realizes that even if Russia cuts off all his claws, America will reinstall them and use Russia as an imaginary enemy to threaten Europe and make Europe seek protection from America, he will definitely respond..."

On February 2, more and more people gathered outside Independence Square in Kiev, shouting that Yanukovych must step down.

After three months of protests, the whole of Ukraine was in chaos. Yanukovych had been abandoned by his friends and relatives and even lost control of the internal security forces and the police.

At this time, Ukrainian opposition representatives Yatseniuk, Klitschko and others signed an agreement "aimed at resolving the Ukrainian crisis" with the support of the West.

Subsequently, the foreign ministers of Germany, Poland and French Foreign Ministry officials agreed to the agreement and asked Yanukovych to accept this condition. The agreement required Ukraine to restore the 2004 Constitution, which represented the victory of the Western faction headed by Yushchenko after the Orange Revolution. Yanukovych had finally changed this.

The agreement also requires Yanukovych to call early presidential elections and withdraw law enforcement officers from Kiev.

Western countries pledged to urge the opposition to surrender their weapons and stop protesting after Yanukovych agreed to the February deal.

It is said that at that time, Russia advised Yanukovych not to recognize and sign the agreement, but it is obvious that Yanukovych still has illusions about the West...

So after he signed the agreement, a group of armed elements from the opposition organization occupied the Ukrainian presidential palace and the Verkhovna Rada that night.

The Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) then removed the democratically elected President Yanukovych on the grounds that he could no longer perform his duties.

"Yes, according to British intelligence, Yanukovych has fled to Russia..."

Nigel shrugged and said:
"The protesters had clear goals, and there were snipers aiming at the presidential palace. Yanukovych was planning to take a flight directly to Russia, but was rejected. So he returned to his hometown of Donetsk, then arrived in Crimea and escaped with the help of Russia..."
