Chapter 457: Disagreement on 5G Technology

Galaxy Technology.

The conversation between Wang Donglai and Ren Fei continues.

The two people, one old and one young, are both rare geniuses.

At this moment, the conversation started with one topic after another.

It covers all over the world and the content is extremely rich.

From communication technology to aerospace prospects to modern agriculture, the two of them can chat enthusiastically about all kinds of unrelated fields.

"Academician Wang, from what you just said, I can see that you are very knowledgeable about communication technology. I wonder what you think of 5G technology?"

Suddenly, Ren Fei asked this question unintentionally.

His expression was naturally calm, as if it was a spur-of-the-moment decision.

Faced with this question, Wang Donglai smiled gently, with a hint of sarcasm in his smile.

"Mr. Ren, you are a veteran and a pioneer in the industry. Speaking of which, can I ask you a few questions?"

Seeing the slightly sarcastic smile on Wang Donglai's face, Ren Fei felt a sudden shock in his heart for some reason and had a bad feeling.

Although he wanted to refuse to answer, when the words came to his lips, Ren Fei couldn't say it out loud, so he could only nod.

"Mr. Ren, I have read a lot of professional books in the field of communications before, and I know a little bit."

"When observing the development history of my country's communications technology, I noticed a few strange phenomena. Mr. Ren, can you tell me about them?"

Without waiting for Ren Fei to answer, Wang Donglai directly asked his question.

"Mr. Ren, why is it that truly leading technology is not promoted immediately?"

"For example, WiFi technology appeared simultaneously with 2G in the 2G era, but the development of WiFi in China has been extremely slow. Why is that?"

Ren Fei's heart finally settled down.

He had a bad feeling before Wang Donglai opened his mouth.

As expected, Wang Donglai asked a question that made him extremely embarrassed.

On the surface, there is nothing surprising about this question.

However, people in the industry know it very well.

The whole cause and effect is clear.

What’s more, he is an industry giant like Ren Fei.

The corner of his eye twitched slightly, and Ren Fei spoke out: "The field of communication is related to national security, and we must be extremely cautious. Our country's Internet technology lags behind the West. If we blindly follow the West's pace, it is easy to fall into a trap without knowing it."

Hearing Ren Fei's answer, Wang Donglai laughed out loud.

"Mr. Ren's answer is absolutely flawless!"

In fact, Wang Donglai asked this question not because he really didn't know the inside story.

Instead, Wang Donglai wanted to take advantage of this opportunity to see how Ren Fei would answer, and then decide what to do based on Ren Fei's answer.

In his previous life, Wang Donglai saw all kinds of rapid development and rapid changes on the Internet.

However, after truly understanding it, I realized that this world is simply a makeshift team.

In the 2G era, WIFI technology appeared together, but domestic mobile phones at that time did not have the WIFI function. The reason was very simple, that is, domestic mobile phones were developing the WAAPI standard.

At that time, China's Xidian Jetcom directly developed a WAPI standard on the grounds that 802.11b technology was not secure enough and had encryption vulnerabilities.

Then after some operations, this standard became a national mandatory standard, and mobile phones connected to the domestic network must comply with the WAPI standard.

If it were just that, it would be fine, but the patent for the WAPI standard is ridiculous and has no technical content at all. Anyone with a discerning eye can see that it is a shell of 802.11b. In theory, any mobile phone that is compatible with 802.11b can be compatible with WAPI.

However, XDJT, which controls this patent, naturally asked for a sky-high price. The price was so high that Nokia, Apple, Samsung and other companies could not accept it. They chose to castrate the WIFI function in their mobile phones rather than accept XDJT's sky-high patent price.

This also led to the fact that before 09, domestic mobile phones had no WIFI function at all, which naturally led to the proliferation and prosperity of parallel imported mobile phones in the market.

Xidian Jetcom thought that it could make a lot of money by owning the patent, but it did not expect that when the WAPI standard was just beginning to take shape, 802.11g appeared, followed by 802.11i. In 2007, 802.11n appeared. The gap between WAPI and its international counterparts became increasingly larger.

It was not until 2009 that the situation turned around and higher authorities compromised and allowed WAPI-compatible mobile phones to be put on the market.

Xidian Jetcom holds the relevant patents, and this is also a mandatory standard for domestic mobile phones to access the network. Therefore, it still relies on this patent to collect hefty patent fees from international brands such as Samsung, Apple, and Nokia.

This was just the 2G era.

It’s the 3G era.

TD-CDMA technology was first developed by Siemens. However, after its development, it was found that the technology had complex networking, and its coverage radius and speed were not ideal. As a result, it was defeated in the 3G standard competition and lost to the WCDMA standard jointly led by Ericsson and Nokia, thus determining the international standard for 3G.

After failing in the competition, Siemens transferred the technology free of charge to the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications' Institute of Telecommunication Science and Technology. After a simple rectification by the institute, Siemens allowed its direct subsidiary Datang Company to submit this technology to the International Telecommunication Union as the TD-SCDMA standard with independent intellectual property rights in 1998.

This technology has been used commercially on a small scale before, initially covering only a dozen cities to see the effect.

The result was naturally no surprise.

It was a complete failure!
However, in order to promote this technology, Datang, under the banner of "independent and controllable", requested that the domestic market launch of 3G be postponed to gain time to improve these technologies. At the same time, it also required the three operators to use different standards. As the strongest operator, China Mobile naturally took on the task of supporting domestic products.

The final result is very obvious. China's 3G was launched very late, with construction only starting in 2010. Not only was it three years later than its international counterparts, the built TD-SCDMA was completely unusable.

Therefore, after China Mobile's 3G license was issued, it immediately lobbied higher authorities to issue 4G licenses and began secretly building 4G networks, which also led to a result.

The domestic mobile Internet has not been in the 3G era for long and is about to enter the 4G era.

With the memories of later generations as evidence, Wang Donglai is even more clear about one thing.

That is, 5G is not as good as advertised.

The three major operators invested huge amounts of money and just built the 4G communication infrastructure, and then they started promoting 5G frantically. However, after 5G really came out, the benefits originally advertised were reduced by more than half.

Although it has not been stated explicitly, many people have a feeling that 5G is being promoted too quickly, resulting in serious and unnecessary waste.

This was the reason why Wang Donglai asked Ren Fei this question before.

If Ren Fei could speak frankly about the calculations in these common fields, it would prove that Huawei did not do it on purpose.

But if not, it’s hard to say.

"Mr. Ren, 4G has brought about huge changes compared to 3G, which can be seen from the current development of the Internet market." "3G supported Qualcomm's CDMA. The technology is mainly based on one company. Everyone can see that Qualcomm has made a lot of money because of this technical standard. Everyone wants to get a piece of the pie. Mr. Ren, you won't deny this, right?"

Wang Donglai looked at Ren Fei and asked seriously.

Ren Fei thought about it for a while, then nodded and admitted it.

"In order to get a piece of the pie, all the major companies showed their real ability and paid a huge price, and they did develop 4G technology."

"Mr. Ren, your company is second to none in the domestic communications field. I think you should be very clear about the situation in this regard. All companies have brought out their real abilities for 4G, and I'm afraid they have exhausted their knowledge reserves. So, in the next 5G research and development, can you still come up with new ideas?"

Without waiting for Ren Fei to answer, Wang Donglai said to himself: "I don't think so. Seeing the success of 4G, the rest of the people will be even crazier. They all want to profit from it and grab a lot of profits from the collapsed Ericsson and Nokia."

"At this point, profit becomes the biggest driving factor,"

"Once profit becomes the dominant factor, many people will not delve into the technology. As long as they can circumvent 4G patents, they will be promoted as 5G."

"But in reality, this kind of 5G is of no use at all."

"The functional improvements that can actually be achieved in software have to be achieved through hardware, which doubles the cost. This is not considered a technological iteration at all."

“Technology requires accumulation and even painstaking research. How many of the technological innovations that are rushed will be truly good technologies?”

Hearing this, Ren Fei's face looked a little ugly.

Naturally, he understood what Wang Donglai meant.

"It seems that Academician Wang is not optimistic about 5G technology?" Ren Fei asked, suppressing his anger.

"It's not that there's anything wrong with 5G technology, but in my opinion, it's not suitable for large-scale promotion."

"From 2G to 3G, we have entered the era of intelligence."

"The transition from 3G to 4G has greatly increased the speed of the Internet, and whether it is games, videos, music, or other Internet services, they are all doing very well."

"So, when 5G comes, can the speed of 4G be increased several times?"

“Even if the Internet speed is increased several times, will the improvement in the sense of using the Internet be that great?”

"Games can be opened and videos can be played at a click. At most, it can save a little loading time compared to the past, but the huge cost is extremely expensive."

"In a market economy, this approach is totally unreasonable."

"In my opinion, 4G should be the main focus, 5G should be the auxiliary, and satellite communications should be the supplement. This is the direction we should develop."

Ren Fei listened patiently, shook his head, and disagreed with Wang Donglai's words. He said, "Academician Wang, you have your ideas and reasons, and I will also tell you mine."

"The 2G era was about text-based Internet, the 3G era was about picture-based Internet, and the 4G era was about video-based Internet. So what about 5G?"

“In my opinion, this is an era where everything is connected.”

"I won't elaborate on the concept of the Internet of Everything. Academician Wang should also be able to understand it clearly."

"Once 5G really breaks through, it will have a significant impact on the efficiency and improvement of industries at the national level, including people's livelihood, medical care, and the military."

"There may still be some missing application scenarios for 5G in the civilian sector, but the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. I think no one will deny the advanced nature of 5G."

"We are already in a catching-up position. If we fail to seize the opportunity and time when new research directions and fields emerge, we will only fall further behind."

"For some things, you will only know right from wrong after you have done them."

"If you worry about whether it's right or wrong, and then don't do it, it's like throwing the baby out with the bathwater, which is extremely stupid!"

Wang Donglai also shook his head, not feeling the slightest bit reserved because Ren Fei was the founder of Warwick, a giant company that was second to none in the field of communications.

"Mr. Ren, I have just made my attitude very clear."

"Based on the current development situation, if 5G technology is forcibly launched, it is inevitable that outdated technology will be used to break through patent restrictions, resulting in higher costs."

"Secondly, 5G is just blindly pursuing high network speed, low latency and large connections. Although 5G's application scenarios play a significant role in people's livelihood, medical care, national defense and other aspects, it is undoubtedly an immature idea to have such huge expectations for a new thing that has not yet appeared."

"Finally, mobile communications and WiFi are a game between the two major ecosystems of CT and IT, and the commercial value of WiFi is higher than that of mobile communications."

“5G基站采用短波频谱传播,说白了就是比4G基站传播距离短,这也就意味着5G基站分布要比4G广。同时,5G基站功耗是4G的2.5-3.5倍,再加上密度比4G高,电能的消耗将会比4G高出一大截。”

"The development of technology follows its own laws. If you try to violate these laws, you will inevitably suffer backlash!"

Ren Fei clapped his hands with a smile on his face, not showing any sign of being offended or angry.

"The ancients said: Listening to your words is better than reading for ten years. The ancients were right!"

"I gained a lot from talking with Academician Wang today."

"Although you and I have different opinions and views, this is how things are in the world. There is no definite answer at all."

"As for the debate on 5G technology, an old man like me will not argue with you."

"The husband has his own reasons, and the wife has her own reasons, but which one is more right? Only time can tell."

"To be honest, I am also looking forward to Academician Wang developing 5G technology to broaden my horizons."

"As I said before, technology is technology and route is route. We are the main body of the former, but we don't have much autonomy. The ideas above are the most important."

After saying this, Ren Fei stood up.

Two hours have passed since the two met.

After all, Ren Fei was a bit older and had traveled a long way, so fatigue was evident on his face.

Wang Donglai stood up and said, "Mr. Ren, I have benefited a lot from talking with you today."

"To be honest, one of the reasons for Galaxy Technology's space rocket project is to use it to launch communication satellites, establish a domestic satellite communication system, and supplement the communication signal problem."

"With 4G as the main body, 5G as the auxiliary, and satellite communications as the supplement, this is our best development route."

Ren Fei did not expect Wang Dong to still insist on this at this time, so he said seriously: "Academician Wang, this is a question of route. I have already said that the decision-making power is not in the hands of the enterprise."

"You are a smart person, you should understand what I mean!"

After saying that, Ren Fei turned and left.

When Yu Dazui left, he looked at Wang Donglai with a complicated look, one of admiration and a hint of shock. (End of this chapter)
