Chapter 89, Classical Oil Painting Techniques, Buying Materials

Chapter 89, Classical Oil Painting Techniques, Buying Materials (Please Read)
Jiang Zhe unexpectedly got a chance to win a lottery.

He clicked on the draw and the wheel appeared.

There were more than a dozen gift boxes on the turntable, and the pointer spun rapidly, finally pointing to a green gift box.

Jiang Zhe frowned. This was a low-quality prize.

He clicked to claim it.

The system gives a prompt, and the player draws a lottery to obtain the Classical Oil Painting Technique (Elementary).

He clicked to receive it, and a huge amount of information was stored in his mind.

While digesting the information, Jiang Zhe was pleasantly surprised to find that although the skill package was elementary, it contained a wide range of knowledge, including introductory common sense and production methods of the main schools of Western classical oil painting.

Classical oil painting mainly refers to the transparent glazing technique, which is different from the direct painting method that is completed in one go.

There are many schools of Western classical oil painting, and every famous painter has his own unique method, so the system only organizes and collects some of the knowledge that has been researched.

The knowledge contained in primary skills is limited to the basics, but it covers a wide range.

Jiang Zhe slowly sorted out these basic knowledge and divided them into several categories. The first category is making canvas and wood bases, from material selection to production steps; the second category is choosing and making colors; the third category is how to use adhesives for oil paints; the fourth category is toners, the grinding of pigments including the use of auxiliary tools; the fifth category is some basic oil painting techniques.

In the fifth category alone, there are painting steps of several schools of painting, for example, the techniques of Florentine painters, Venetian painters, Dutch painters, French Academy, etc.

The entry-level gift package only lets Jiang Zhe know the steps, but he cannot master them directly, so he still needs to try and explore.

Jiang Zhe only needed to master a basic skill to truly feel the complexity of classical oil painting.

Before acquiring the skill, he knew that oil painting required stretching canvas and making a base, but the skill included many ways of making a base.

Jiang Zhe felt excited about the rapid acquisition of this new knowledge, and became more and more interested in exploring higher-level knowledge.

He made himself a cup of tea and drank it while thinking.

The task of painting with Chen Yan as the model will be rewarded only after completion.

The task this time with Sister Liao as the model is to get a reward simply by completing a fine product. It can be seen that the tasks of a contract model may vary from person to person.

If you take the initiative to trigger more tasks, will you gain more?

Judging from the current situation, painting and selling paintings are my main livelihood skills and pleasure. For me, the more skills I master, the better.

The entry-level gift package of classical oil painting is already so complicated. In the future, I want to study Chinese painting and calligraphy, and perhaps other types of paintings and knowledge. I will face more problems, so I must give full play to the role of the system.

This unexpected gain gave him more ideas on how to use the system.

Jiang Zhe plans to go to the painting supplies store on Wenhua Street to purchase oil painting supplies tomorrow and start practicing as soon as possible.

He made a detailed list of the tools and materials he would need.

The next day, Jiang Zhe came to the familiar art supply store.

The shop owner received him personally. When he saw Jiang Zhe's purchase list, he frowned.

"Hey, these oil painting fabrics you wrote about are not available in my store, and other stores don't have them either. Where did you see them from?"

Jiang Zhe couldn't say that he got it from the system lottery, so he had to make up a source: "I read it in a book. I want to buy it and try it out."

The shop owner said: "The ancients said long ago that it is better to have no books than to believe in them completely.

Canvas, I have it. Linen, I have it too. Blended fabrics and this new material canvas, I have it all here. But the Roman linen, Swiss linen, Gobelin linen you wrote about...

To be honest, I have never heard of it. It may be called something else in our country. Anyway, I don’t have it here.”

Jiang Zhe recalled the detailed description of linen in the system gift package, and then relayed it to the shop owner: "The requirements for linen are that the warp and weft are composed of several strands of thread, the structure is uniform, and there are three types of textures: coarse, medium and fine. If not, thicker linen will also work, and linen with double threads in one direction will also work." The shop owner couldn't figure it out, so he said, "You should choose it yourself."

He cleared a space and brought out more than a dozen rolls of canvas. "Look, I have the most complete collection of canvas here, not only canvas and linen, but also canvas with primed material."

Jiang Zhe said, "I won't look at the cloth that has been painted with base tone. I want to learn how to make the base myself."

The shop owner pointed out to him which rolls were of new material, which were blended, and which were expensive linens.

Based on his skills and knowledge, Jiang Zhe selected a canvas, high-end linen with different textures, and a blended cloth.

Although these canvases are slightly different from the ones described in the gift pack knowledge, they are the best choice at the moment and we have to make do with them for now.

Next, he bought the inner frame and materials for making the base.

The process of buying the inner frame was smooth.

This shop has latex glue and so-called lead powder (which is the white powder used to mix with glue).

However, there was no granular rabbit skin glue that Jiang Zhe wanted, only cowhide glue and bone glue for painting fine brushwork.

He bought glue and powder, and also bought several sets of oil painting brushes of different models, including fan-shaped brushes, round-tip brushes, row brushes, and gui brushes.

Next, he went to choose pigments and colorants.

The shop owner saw Jiang Zhe take out another piece of paper with many names written on it.

He only took a glance and said, "I don't have the pigments you wrote about. The pigments you wrote about require color powder, which needs to be ground into a paste by yourself.

The capital and Shanghai may have them, but we definitely don’t have them in Binhai. If you want to choose good pigments, foreign brands are also good.”

Since there is no such thing, you can only buy ready-made pigments.

Jiang Zhe is not limited to a specific brand. As long as he thinks the paint is good, he will buy a small tube of paint and go back to practice his classical oil painting skills.

He also bought linseed oil, turpentine, matte and dammar varnishes.

Linseed oil is a commonly used oil for oil painting and can be turned into thick oil through sun exposure; turpentine is a volatile oil that can be used as a colorant or as a solvent for resin.

Resin varnish is used to create the surface of classical oil paintings, with an enamel-like texture.

Because Jiang Zhe bought a lot of things, the store owner sent a car to deliver the goods to his door.

Jiang Zhe returned home and started by stretching the canvas to familiarize himself with the preliminary preparations for making oil paintings.

He also made some cardboard into oil painting paper.

These oil painting papers can be used to experiment with how to match paints.

While Jiang Zhe was busy, he received a call from his mother urging him to go home for dinner.

Xu Li was cooking. When she saw Jiang Zhe coming back, she started to complain: "It's almost time to release the results. Why don't you pay attention at all?"

Jiang Zhe hurriedly washed his hands and helped his mother serve the dishes. "We have to wait anyway, and staring at it all the time won't work. We might as well make good use of the time."
