Chapter 85: The Terror That Spreads Out

Chapter 85: The Terror That Spreads Out

Ella was in the center of the magic circle, with calming incense burning in front of her. The diffused fragrance made the discordant undead energy in the air more obvious.

Ella closed her eyes, feeling the trace of undead energy.

"They're still up north."

After a long time, she opened her eyes and looked towards the north.

"Still in the North?"

Reinhardt frowned, but he did not doubt that there was anything wrong with Ella's perception.

"But if we go further north, we will leave the territory of Sagat City."

Reinhardt looked towards the north. They had performed this ritual more than once. After chasing all the way, they had passed the northernmost village of Saget City, although it was now in ruins.

Further north is the border.

"Perhaps they haven't crossed the border yet. Those northern border nobles are not easy to deal with. There is no need for those undead to cause trouble for themselves at this time."

"He suspected that the undead from the city of Sagat had infiltrated his territory. A curfew has been implemented, the militia patrols have been increased, and a small team of regular soldiers has been assigned to each village to reinforce the night watch in the village."

"How did Count Kahn deal with it?"

"Just for your information, the remnants of the necromancy energy point in that direction."

Reinhardt made a completely different judgment.

"intuition."

"My Lord, a report from the North."

Ella pointed out the direction and the team started moving again.

Before Ella could finish, Reinhardt took over the conversation.

Ella was still trying to rationally analyze the whereabouts of the undead.

"No, they must have crossed the border."

"There are some disturbing rumors in Earl Carne's territory."

"Recently, villagers in his territory have frequently died mysteriously, and some horror stories about the dead have begun to circulate among the villagers."

"If there is any 'diplomatic' dispute, the responsibility will be ..."

There were no border guards there now, and the northern border nobles withdrew their troops for a distance.

The middle-aged man in the royal capital took the report from the servant.

Reinhart added his own rationale.

These border nobles, who had been in conflict and friction for many years, were very efficient and had taken a lot of measures not long after the abnormalities occurred.

"Let the several territories around Earl Kahn prepare, as we may have to go south."

"It's all my responsibility as the captain."

This reasoning made no sense, but Ella sighed and began to pick up the incense on the floor.

The wizard beside him frowned.

"But the Church..."

"Something is wrong with the undead this time. We can't use them as an excuse to play those little tricks. I have a feeling that if we don't handle the undead well this time, there will be endless troubles."

The middle-aged man patted the wizard on the shoulder.

"Don't worry, I will discuss this matter with the Sun God Cult in advance. Judging from their recent actions, their situation on the front line does not seem to be as optimistic as many people think. Maybe they will agree to go south this time."

The middle-aged man looked to the side, at the servant who was still waiting for his reply.

"Let the Earl be on high alert during this period and wait for the next move."

The Count's troops were now indeed alert, and the border outposts had placed extra torches and bonfires at a distance in order to detect incoming threats as far away as possible.

"It looks like something has happened."

Reinhardt hid in the shadows in the distance, observing the soldiers on the sentry post. The soldiers on the sentry post looked very nervous, with the crossbows in their hands already strung.

"The cavalry that sent the message has not returned, and we are isolated."

The commander of the small outpost was discussing the situation with his adjutant.

"What on earth is that monster? There have been three victims in the past two days."

"God knows, even in the horrific undead stories circulating among the villagers recently, there is no situation like this."

The adjutant seemed to hesitate and looked up at his commander.

"Do you think that what's circulating among the villagers are just stories? I mean, there have indeed been many deaths and disappearances recently."

The commander glanced at his adjutant.

"They are just lies told by ignorant villagers who are frightened. You have looked at the 'Common Monster Guide' and there are no monsters that match the descriptions of those villagers."

The commander refuted the adjutant's opinion, but there was some uncertainty in his tone. After all, the "Common Monster Illustrated Book" was just a basic reading material prepared for grassroots officers like them, and it was prefixed with "common".

Many of the villagers who were frightened out of their wits’ end were eyewitnesses of the undead attack.

The commander didn't know why these witnesses were able to survive. From their crazy descriptions, it seemed that many of them were discovered by the Undead, but those Undead did not kill them off.

"Keep two or more people in any action, don't be alone,"

The commander pulled his thoughts back and decided to deal with the situation at hand first.

He didn't know much about the monster that attacked the sentry post. In fact, no one in the entire sentry post had ever actually witnessed the monster attack. They only knew that anyone who was left alone in the sentry post would be attacked and then their bodies would have their hearts dug out.

"Boss, Kai and the others are gone."

Kay was the name of one of the three dead soldiers who were supposed to be lying in the sentry post's morgue.

The commander walked into the morgue and saw only blood on the bed. The bodies of the three soldiers were gone.

“There was unrest among them.”

The sentry post used additional lighting to illuminate the interior. It was not known whether this was to better prevent attacks from unknown monsters, or whether it was the human instinct of fear to dispel the darkness as much as possible.

In short, these lights allowed Reinhardt and his men to see the situation in the outpost clearly.

He could see confusion, doubt, and fear on the soldiers' faces.

"It's almost time for us to go on stage."

Ella looked at Reinhardt in surprise.

"Appear? If you just show up like that, the first reaction of these soldiers will probably be to shoot an arrow at your head."

Reinhardt shrugged. Ella was right. These soldiers now looked like frightened birds and would probably shoot him first.

"It doesn't matter. They can't shoot me."

After saying that, Reinhardt walked out.

"Who's there!"

Just as Ella thought, a crossbow arrow shot towards his head.

The soldier subconsciously pulled the trigger of the crossbow before shouting.

The outpost was not big, and the commander soon received news that a group of adventurers appeared outside his outpost.

Just as he turned around and was about to leave the cabin with his adjutant to meet the adventurers, he heard a clicking sound.

"We are here to help, not to be enemies."

Reinhardt was still explaining his purpose, but the soldiers on the sentry post still pointed their crossbows at him. The soldiers didn't dare to believe that someone from the territory of Sagat City was a necromancer.

Then, a scream was heard from the sentry post.

Reinhardt ignored the soldiers blocking their way and rushed into the sentry post while they were stunned by the screams.

Then he saw the commander's body and the terrified adjutant in the morgue.
