Chapter 458: Traps Are Not Afraid of Being Simple
The manor, once owned by Patrick Morgan's family, has now been taken back by the British government following the death of the God of Truth and the extinction of the family. Due to the shortage of public funds, the repair and maintenance of the manor is out of the question, and for some undisclosed reasons, private buyers are not allowed to take an interest in it, so it has gradually become abandoned in recent years.
Recently, the abandoned manor has welcomed many strangers; these strange people with unique clothing have turned the manor upside down, looking for something. Until two days ago, a cloud of black smoke suddenly emerged from the ground of the manor, and then a gust of cold wind blew, sweeping the ground for dozens of miles around.
Thanks to the remote location of the manor, surrounded by sparsely populated farms, forests and country roads, the dark wind suspected to be caused by black magic did not hurt many people, and the few people who knew about it were all given emergency treatment by the Ministry of Magic's memory cancellation officers.
As a matter of course, the manor was more closely guarded and isolated, and countless Muggle-repelling spells were cast around it. Due to a shortage of manpower, the Ministry of Magic had to ask the Forrest family for help and begged Earl Goff to send people to guard the periphery of the manor to reduce the burden on the Ministry of Magic.
Because the matter involved a serious incident of black magic, the Earl readily agreed to the Ministry of Magic's request and used the power of the Muggle intelligence agency to block the roads around the manor. However, the "government workers" from two different societies had very different thinking, action styles, and working methods. There were some bumps in the collaboration, and both found many things about each other difficult to understand.
"Those Muggles are too lazy. Everyone just walks around in a small circle and refuses to take more than one step. The diligent ones will be warned if they take a few more steps, saying that they have crossed the line."
"That 'password' is ridiculous. If we were wizards, we could just cast an Disillusionment Charm and listen nearby, wouldn't it be clear? Is this the only stupid way they can use to distinguish friend from foe?"
"Isn't it the most ridiculous thing to use numbers instead of names? If everyone only says numbers instead of names, wouldn't it be easier for outsiders to impersonate you?"
A group of wizards were watching the actions of the Muggles outside the manor, pointing and talking. Just as Mycroft Holmes could not accurately understand the wonders of the "Muggle Repelling Spell", the wizards naturally had no way of understanding the details of the defense zone division and regulation management.
Among a group of wizards gathered and whispered, two wizards and witches who took the initiative to isolate themselves from the crowd were particularly conspicuous.
Nymphadora Tonks's hair switched back and forth between flame and gray, as if expressing her mixed feelings of dissatisfaction and disappointment.
"Why do you exclude me from the candidates for close-range execution? I am clearly capable of doing it. I have always done a good job." The novice Auror who had just graduated had not yet been assimilated into the ethos of the government department and was unaware that his complaint was actually a challenge to his superior's authority.
Kingsley on the side had a straight face, as expressionless as a marble sculpture. "I have told you more than once that the dark magic items in the basement have a strong ability to corrode people's hearts. Only Aurors who can resist the Imperius Curse are qualified to perform close-range missions."
"I promised, I can!" Tonks couldn't help but raise her voice.
This assurance did not impress Kingsley. He did not even look at his subordinates. "You only 'think' you can do it, not 'really' do it. The people selected have experienced the Imperius Curse attack and successfully resisted the curse."
"I can do that, too. If you don't believe me, you can try using the Imperius Curse on me."
The ridiculous proposal was finally exchanged for a hidden roll of the eyes. Kingsley rejected it unhappily: "A tentative curse cast with good intentions is not the same as an offensive curse cast with malice. Facing the Imperius Curse when you are prepared and being attacked without any preparation are also not the same. If you continue to make trouble, I will transfer you back to the office in the department and you will only do liaison work in the future."
The well-reasoned refusal, coupled with the straightforward threat, finally suppressed the newcomer's eagerness and unwillingness to fall behind; the hair on Tonks' head turned completely gray.
Kingsley's attention was not entirely focused on suppressing the newcomer. At the same time, he called out to other subordinates: "Stop staring at those Muggles. Pay attention, the contact person will be here soon. Send the things back to the Ministry safely, so that our hard work these days will not be in vain."
An Auror asked worriedly, "Kingsley, who will come to pick us up? The thing in the basement is too scary. If we take it back without dealing with it, I'm afraid it will cause chaos everywhere we pass."
"You've asked me several times, so I think it's time to tell you now. The person who came is Dumbledore, and Scrimgeour specifically asked Dumbledore to help. He will try to suppress the dark magic of that thing, although it is only temporary, and it will be long enough for us to take the thing back and seal it up."
In the wizarding world, the reputation of an old wizard is still very useful. When they heard that he would be coming, many people present breathed a sigh of relief.
But before the Aurors could be happy for long, another hoarse, gloomy voice reached their ears: "Unfortunately, Dumbledore will not come."
"who?"
"Avada Kendawa!"
A ball of green light obscured everyone's vision, and the first to be hit was Kingsley, the leader of the Aurors.
Even though he was mentally prepared, Kingsley almost died from the killing curse. When the green light filled his field of vision, this veteran member of the Order of the Phoenix had the illusion that he was controlled by fear and his whole body was stiff; in the end, he escaped with a trick similar to a donkey rolling.
Fortunately, apart from this killing curse that was intended to take the initiative, the opponent did not make any new attacks; from the direction where the spell came from, a thin figure with a pale face gradually emerged.
"Unexpectedly, you managed to dodge my killing curse. In that case, I can spare your life." The visitor laughed sinisterly and said in a strange sighing tone, "Now, you can save your lives and get out of here with a grateful heart!"
"Who are you?" a young Auror shouted loudly; looking at his colleagues who numbered in the dozens around him, the advantage in numbers gave him great courage.
"Don't talk, be careful! He is Voldemort." Kingsley took the initiative to expose the identity of the enemy, completely ignoring the fact that this would greatly undermine the morale of his own side; at least, this approach can minimize casualties caused by ignorance and fearlessness.
As expected, as soon as he said this, all the Aurors stepped back subconsciously; the young man who had shouted at him earlier couldn't even hold his wand anymore, and his hands and feet felt weak. He only managed to avoid falling to the ground thanks to his colleagues pulling him up.
"You are a smart man." Voldemort stared at Kingsley, his mutated eyes emitting a frightening light, like a poisonous snake staring at its prey; "Are you interested in joining the ranks of the Death Eaters? I am short of manpower here, and this is a rare opportunity."
Kingsley said nothing.
A viper crawled out from nowhere, spitting out its tongue, and kept approaching the Aurors.
Kingsley stood in front of his subordinates, forcing them to retreat step by step; the Aurors all had the same idea at this moment to retreat quickly, and no one dared to raise their wands. But the viper swam much faster than the retreating footsteps of the people, and it soon came in front of the Aurors, suddenly raised half of its body, and made a gesture to pounce. At this moment, another long snake shot out from the darkness like an arrow, swam past the feet of the Aurors, and collided head-on with Voldemort's viper amid countless screams.
The two long snakes strangled and bit each other; although the viper was larger in size, it soon fell into a disadvantage, with blood and flesh flying everywhere.
Soon, more snakes of different colors appeared, white, gold, and black. In a four-on-one situation, the viper was quickly suppressed and seriously injured, leaving it on the verge of death.
Voldemort was filled with fear and anger as he looked at the long snake that suddenly appeared. What frightened him even more was the several beams of light that suddenly fell from all around him, locking the surrounding space.
"Forrest!" The Dark Lord's voice was as gloomy and hoarse as ever, mixed with unspeakable resentment and malice.
In contrast, Kingsley heaved a sigh of relief, and complained with some relief: "I thought something went wrong with you and Dumbledore and they wouldn't come. Then all our lives would be lost here."
"Dumbledore has been led to Greece, so he really can't come in a short time. But it doesn't matter, I will hold him back until Dumbledore arrives; you guys go first!"
Kingsley hesitated: "You are alone..."
"It's easier for me to handle it alone. If there are too many people, we will be restricted and have to distract ourselves from protecting you." Lin You's words made many people dissatisfied, but no one dared to say that they were willing to stay and face Voldemort.
Kingsley's order put an end to these tangled thoughts in time: "Let's leave, quickly! This is a plan made by the Ministry and Dumbledore. Don't ask any more questions, just leave!"
The Aurors left one after another, trembling with fear. Many of them even had slight splitting during Apparition, and there was no way to take care of them for the moment, so they could only take them away first and then provide treatment.
Lin You and Voldemort ignored the noisy Aurors and only had eyes for each other.
"Your snake is quite strong. Although I didn't let you release venom, it's still rare that you can survive the siege for so long." Lin You nonchalantly commented on the battle between snakes. "You made it into a Horcrux, right?"
"If you want to delay time, then I can only say that you are wrong. Dumbledore will not come. His phoenix was killed by me and has just been reborn. He cannot apparate anyone. At the same time, all the Floo networks around him have been destroyed. More importantly, a curse broke out on him and he was seriously injured."
"Yes, yes..." Lin You nodded repeatedly, seemingly agreeing with a half-smile on his face, "If not, how could you step into this trap with confidence? You are only so brave. If I don't give you a good reason, no matter how good the bait is, it won't be able to catch you."
Voldemort's face changed drastically, and he suddenly waved his wand and cast a series of spells at the snakes, as if he wanted to provide assistance to the vipers; green light flashed, and more than a dozen killing curses were cast in a row, but they were all blocked by Lin You.
The thick stone wall that rose from the ground blocked Voldemort's view of the snakes. But Voldemort's real goal was obviously not to rescue his partner Viper, but to run straight to the manor villa without looking back the moment the stone wall rose.
Above the villa, a strange black fog condensed and did not dissipate. It was only because of magic that it was not exposed to the world.
Lin You calmly watched Voldemort crash into the black fog; although with his speed as a Gold Saint, he had plenty of time to intercept him, but he remained motionless and watched the other party get what he wanted.
The black mist seemed to be alive, and it began to penetrate into Voldemort's body as soon as it came into contact. With each penetration, Voldemort's eyes became brighter; his pupils quickly changed shape, and before long, a large area of pure black occupied most of the space in his eye sockets.
The moment all the black fog disappeared, not only did Voldemort's eyes turn black, but even his originally pale skin began to show a hint of bluish-black.
“That’s it, this familiar feeling.” Without having time to carefully appreciate the changes in his body, Voldemort opened his eyes and laughed wildly and triumphantly. “Do you think I don’t know that this is a trap, Forrest? Your biggest mistake is to fear and reject the dark magic, but you don’t know what you have missed! This will be the biggest mistake you will make in your life, and it will also be your last mistake.”
Along with the laughter, a green light enough to cover the sky burst out from the wand in Voldemort's hand, like a huge net with nowhere to escape, covering his head.
Amid Voldemort's wild laughter, Lin You also laughed, as if a hunter saw his prey completely trapped.
The green light came with Voldemort's laughter, and shattered with Lin You's laughter; the uncontrolled magic power burst in all directions, some quickly, some slowly, and scattered to the ground. The dots of green light were like countless fireflies dancing in the wind; although it was the same green light, it did not pose any threat to anyone.
The arrogant laughter stopped abruptly, and Lin You's chuckle sounded like a loud bell in Voldemort's ears.
"Didn't I tell you that otherwise, how could I let you step into the trap with confidence? Dumbledore's injury weakened your vigilance; the aura of the real source of dark magic magnified your greed. Isn't it because of these two things that every deceived person falls? So, the trap is not afraid of being simple, as long as it is useful."
Voldemort's face showed humiliation at being deceived, panic at being trapped, and anger at being mocked, but all these expressions flashed away in a very short time. Dark magic gushed out of him like a swirling gust of wind, suddenly crashing into the pillar of light in the air.
The barrier that isolated the space trembled slightly under the violent impact, but there was no gap at all. The black wind swept through every corner, but could not find any way to the outside world.
This manor was completely locked down. Even if it was the Hanged Man himself who came, it would be difficult for him to break out. What about Voldemort who only had a little bit of his aura?
"Originally, only beings like the Hanged Man are qualified to be my opponents. You should feel honored that I have taken the trouble to set a trap to deal with you, Voldemort."
Lin You acted slowly, allowing Voldemort to struggle in vain. With a casual blow, he turned the viper Nagini into ashes and destroyed the opponent's last Horcrux.
"Your ending was brought forward quite a bit, but from another perspective, it dragged on too much time. It's time to end it." (End of this chapter)
