Falsifying history is good business

Chapter 467: Troublesome People

Not sure whether he agreed with Lin You's words or simply felt that he had nothing to say, Morpheus turned his head away and looked elsewhere.

Lin You followed the other person's gaze and looked at the apartment building on the side of the road. After taking a look, he couldn't help but sigh with pity: "Alas, it seems that Mr. Constantine is in trouble."

In the apartment building, Constantine, wearing his signature long trench coat, stood motionless in front of a door; his eyes were slightly closed, his breath was faint and long, and he actually fell asleep while standing.

In the room separated from Constantine by a door was a young woman, wrapped in a large piece of yellow sand, lying on the bed, dying; the fire of her soul had already begun to dissipate, and it was irreversible.

Lin You recognized clearly that the woman's condition was due to her overestimating her own capabilities by trying to use her mortal body to drive divine power, which led to the exhaustion of both her body and mind. Eventually, she ran out of energy and was in turn devoured by the divine weapon.

Although the artifact is good, it is not something that mortals can use lightly; it is like installing the engine of an interstellar rocket on a propeller plane. The only result is that the plane will disintegrate immediately after it takes off into the sky.

Morpheus called softly; Constantine in front of the door suddenly woke up, and after looking around, he finally realized that he had fallen into a dream from the beginning, so he hurriedly pushed the door open.

"A magical and interesting ability." Lin You exclaimed sincerely, and at the same time wondered, "How far can you go with this ability?"

"What?" The Sleepy Man was about to take a step forward, but stopped when he heard that.

Lin You further asked: "I mean, your ability to enter dreams can only be used on humans?"

"Who else but humans?"

“Some animals dream, too.”

Morpheus shook his head and denied Lin You's conjecture: "Animals' dreams are just like their thoughts and consciousness, extremely simple; so simple that there is no room for any intervention."

"Animals have simple thoughts, but what about those with complex thoughts?" Lin You paused for a moment before finally revealing his true intention. "For example, do gods dream? If they do, can you enter their dreams?"

This question was obviously beyond the scope of the topic, and it made Mephiston pause for a long time, and he completely forgot his original plan to enter the apartment building.

"Any creature with thoughts and consciousness will dream - gods should also dream! But their dreams must be very special, and I have never experienced the dreams of gods."

Lin You was disappointed by the other party's answer. After pondering for a moment, he asked again, "Some people say that the Endless Family exists because of humans. Do you think that you only exist because of humans?"

Morpheus hesitated for a while: "I can't answer this question for you, sorry."

As he spoke, the figure of the sleep demon disappeared from the street and entered the apartment building. Lin You watched silently, neither stopping him nor leaving.

In the apartment room, Morpheus took back one of the lost artifacts - the dream sandbag - from Constantine's girlfriend, but was angrily criticized by Constantine for his overly cold behavior.

Finally, the sleep demon was moved and gave the dying woman one last sweet dream, allowing her to spend the last moments of her life in the dream.

Lin You waited until Murphys left before entering the apartment.

"It's so rare to see you sad about someone's death, Constantine. I always thought you were a hard-hearted person who could let your friends die without batting an eyelid."

"If you're here to express your condolences, I accept them," Constantine said grimly.

"That's exactly what I wanted to ask. Are you going to…"

"Rachel." Constantine said a name with force.
"Well, Rachel..." Lin You nodded, not seeming to be interrupted, but rather taking the initiative to pick up where Constantine left off. "Are you planning on organizing her funeral? A memorial service? Does she have any other family members who need to be notified?"

"When did Earl Goff start the funeral business?"

Lin You was unconcerned by the sarcasm and ridicule: "It's not easy to enjoy the funeral services of the Earl's family. Those who don't meet the requirements can't enjoy them. Only those who have been harmed by black magic, possessed by demons, or attacked by cult rituals have the opportunity to enjoy the thoughtful services provided by the Earl."

"Hmph... you make covering up the truth sound so refreshing."

"What else? You guys always only care about the beginning and not the end. You only care about killing but not burying. You exorcise demons and fight magic, and then you just walk away after the fight, leaving behind a horrific scene. If I hadn't sent someone to clean up your mess, you would have been invited to have coffee by SHIELD a long time ago."

Constantine's expression suddenly froze, and the subtle change was keenly noticed by Lin You.

"Why, has SHIELD contacted you?" Although it was a guess, Count Goff's tone did not sound surprised. "It's normal. The United States is their base camp and the place with the most stringent surveillance. Do you have a good relationship with them, or is it a bad relationship?" "Last year, a black-haired one-eyed man came to me and asked me to be a consultant and help deal with some 'small problems with the smell of sulfur' when necessary."

"You agreed?"

"Why not? SHIELD can help me a lot in many cases, and that charcoal-haired guy speaks nicely." After all, she was his ex-girlfriend who he had broken up with for a long time. After the initial emotional impact passed, Constantine gradually got rid of the sadness and habitually lit a cigarette for himself.

"So, you have no job, no salary, no benefits, and just a title of 'consultant'. When necessary, you have to risk your life to deal with those 'small problems with a smell of sulfur' for SHIELD?"

Every time Lin You said something, Constantine's face darkened. Finally, Count Goff sneered and asked, "Is this still the Constantine I know?"

Anyone who has dealt with the devil knows that "the smell of sulfur" is never a "small problem" and 99% of the time it will be life-threatening - and the kind that will send one to hell and never be reborn.

It’s not that Constantine has not helped others solve similar problems for “free”, but as the old saying goes, “free is the most expensive”; Constantine helps people for free in order to get back the favors tenfold or a hundredfold in the future. The more generous he is when helping others, the more cruel he will be when asking for favors in the future.

Countless people of Constantine's "old friends" lost their lives because of this.

The question is, is Nick Fury the kind of person who would honestly repay favors?
"Did you come here just to laugh at me?"

"Of course not. What's so funny about your joke? The joke I want to see, the original owner won't let me see it." Lin You expressed his helplessness, "I came here for Morpheus, you just happened to run into him."

"Sleepyman is gone," Constantine reminded unhappily.

"But He will come back. He got the sandbag back from you, and he should be rushing to hell to find his helmet. But there is still a gem left in the world, so He will definitely come back. I have to keep an eye on him and not let him cause any trouble."

Constantine taunted, "Or, when He makes trouble, you will clean up His mess?"

"No, if he dares to cause a big mess, I will kick his ass hard!"

After becoming a true god, Lin You often spoke more confidently; but Constantine obviously did not have enough vision to see Lin You's true level, so he just thought that Count Goff was just putting on a show and sneered with disdain.

As they were talking, a group of people filed in from the door; they were taciturn, well-trained and clearly divided into groups. After entering the room, they were busy collecting or erasing all the supernatural traces in the room. From beginning to end, no one looked at Lin You and Constantine who were present.

Complete silence would bring inexplicable pressure to outsiders. Constantine suddenly felt that the room was filled with an unsettling atmosphere. He stabbed out his cigarette irritably and walked out.

"Do you know anything about Morpheus' family?" Lin You followed slowly and asked the Hell Detective the question he really cared about.

In addition to being in trouble, another famous trait of Constantine is his deep knowledge of various supernatural beings in the DC world. As of now, there are people who are more "knowledgeable" than Constantine, but it is not as convenient to find others as he is.

"I don't believe the Forrest Family doesn't have information on the Endless Family." Constantine did not relax as he walked out the door. He could feel that there were more subordinates of Count Goff lurking around the streets.

Lin You disagreed: "Of course there is information, but what I need now is not a boring text description, but the judgment from professionals."

If these were characters that the writer had carefully rewritten, he would definitely know them and be familiar with them; the problem was that these members of the Endless Family were hidden by God and stuffed into the big world, and Lin You had never come into contact with them beforehand, let alone grasp their characteristics.

Constantine took the opportunity to laugh and said, "Should I feel honored to be recognized as a 'professional' by Earl Goff? I thought people with the last name 'Forrest' would only look down on others!"

"You really want to see it?"

"Fuck! Listen to me, Fuck!" Constantine just swung his middle finger at him.

Lin You said slowly: "I remember that when you were the professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts, you were accused of developing an improper relationship with an underage witch..."

"That's slander!" Constantine was furious.

"Really? But I remember that the Ministry of Magic sent an official letter, asking you to go to the Department of Magical Law Enforcement for questioning, but you ignored it and ran directly to the United States. The Ministry of Magic therefore determined that you were absconding from the crime and issued an investigation notice... Although it is not a formal wanted warrant, it is not much different in terms of effectiveness. Every wizard who sees you has the power to hand you over to the Ministry of Magic."

At this point, Earl Goff looked at Hell's Detective up and down with "curiosity" and said, "You should not have obtained American wizard citizenship, right? Otherwise, the British Ministry of Magic will have to fight a lawsuit with the American Magical Congress, which is really troublesome."

"...What do you want to ask?" Constantine looked sour that he managed to utter this sentence after a long time. (End of this chapter)
