Rebirth of the Legend of the Red Age

Chapter 10, Visiting the Quadrangle

Chapter 10, Visiting the Siheyuan
Shopkeeper Sun hesitated a little. After some thought, he slowly said: Brother Dali, let me tell you the truth. Most of my funds have been transported to Nandu, and I have very little cash on hand now.

The total value of your goods is about 8000 yuan. It is very difficult for me to raise so much money in a short period of time, so I want to discuss with you. I wonder if Brother Dali is ready to go south?
Wang Li’s father replied: No, my family has lived here for several generations and we are not ready to leave our hometown.

Shopkeeper Sun clapped his hands and asked happily: "Brother Dali, how about this? I will use a courtyard house nearby and three thousand dollars to exchange these furs and Chinese herbs with you. What do you think?"
Wang Dali hesitated a little, and then he thought: This is Shichahai, even after the reform and opening up, it will not be demolished. Moreover, this place is near the imperial city, in the center of Kyoto, and there are many celebrity buildings around it, such as Ms. Song's residence and Prince Gong's residence.

After Kyoto was recaptured, it was difficult to buy a Siheyuan before the reform and opening up. Some people were afraid to sell, some were afraid to buy, or some were unable to go through the formalities. Now there is an opportunity to get a Siheyuan in the center of Kyoto, and you must not miss it.

These were all personal properties before the recovery of Kyoto, and they were not shops but ordinary houses. Even if a big storm came in a few years, no one would be able to say anything.

Anyway, my family didn't do business, and we had never been a soldier of the White Party. We were just hunters. If we exchanged furs for a house, no one would say anything.

After making up his mind, Wang Li asked his father before he could answer: "Manager Sun, how big is your courtyard? Where is it located? Do you have a title deed? Can it be transferred?"
Shopkeeper Sun and Wang Li's father were both stunned when they heard his question.

Wang Li's father didn't say anything, and Shopkeeper Sun saw that he didn't say anything.

He replied to Wang Li: My courtyard is a large three-entry courtyard, which was passed down from my ancestors in the old days. I am an old bannerman, and my ancestors used to be second-rank officials.

However, this house was destroyed during the invasion of the Eight-Nation Alliance. In recent years, there has been chaos and war, and I still have two courtyards to live in in Kyoto, so I did not rebuild this three-in-one courtyard.

If this courtyard house had not been destroyed, it would be worth at least 2 yuan based on its address and area. Let me introduce it to you:
This is a quadrangle with three courtyards and a cross courtyard. The main entrance of the first courtyard faces the street, and the back of the courtyard is Xikoudai Hutong. A few hundred meters to the north is Shichahai, and a few hundred meters to the east is Prince Gong's Mansion. The geographical location is quite advantageous.

I have the title deed. If you agree to change it, I can take you to the housing authority to handle the transfer formalities, and then the courtyard house will belong to you.

Wang Li thought: He is indeed a profiteer. Although the price of a courtyard house has increased a lot compared to the early years of the Republic of China, a courtyard house with three entrances is not worth 2 yuan.

But out of his yearning to own a courtyard house, Wang Li said to him: "Please, Manager Sun, take us to have a look."

Shopkeeper Sun immediately nodded in agreement and said: Please wait a moment, I will go get the key.

Manager Sun took the key and led the father and son to Xikoudai Hutong. It took less than 30 minutes to reach the gate of a large courtyard. Judging from the stone lions at the gate, the copper nails on the gate, and the doorstop, this was indeed the house of a high-ranking official, but it looked a little old.

Just as Manager Sun said, the gate faces a street about 10 meters wide. The wall is 2 to 3 meters high and is made of blue bricks, some of which have already fallen off.

Shopkeeper Sun took out a key, opened the door and invited Wang Li and his son in.

After the father and son entered the house, they saw a 5-meter-long screen wall opposite them. On the right was a gatehouse 7 meters long and 5 meters wide. 5 meters ahead, there was a hanging flower gate on the left. After passing the hanging flower gate, it was the first courtyard of the courtyard, the largest courtyard, and the only one that had not been destroyed.

临街的是一个长25米宽5米,分成三个房间的倒座房。紧挨着倒座房是一个长8米宽5米的西厢房。紧邻西厢房的是长12米宽6米的正房两间。

These rooms form a U-shape with its opening facing the hanging flower gate. Opposite the U-shaped opening, around the screen wall is the biggest feature of this courtyard: there is a garden, which is 18 meters wide, 40 meters long, and covers an area of more than one acre.

At present, the garden is in a state of disrepair. On the far left of the garden is a corridor walkway. The corridor starts from behind the screen wall and runs along the central axis of the three-courtyard quadrangle to the third courtyard, dividing the courtyard into two parts, the left side is the residence and the right side is the garden.

Going forward through the corridor, on the left is the original second courtyard of the Siheyuan. The difference between the second courtyard and the first courtyard is that there is no back house. Opposite the corridor, there should have been a west wing room of 8 meters long and 5 meters wide, connected to a main room of 12 meters long and 6 meters wide.

Continue walking along the corridor, and on the left is the third courtyard of the courtyard. The third courtyard is a little special. From the remaining buildings, it can be seen that there are no wing rooms in this courtyard, only the main house, which is 17 meters long and 6 meters wide. There are small courtyards behind and in front of the main house, the front one is 8 meters wide and the back one is 4 meters wide.

Overall, this quadrangle is a typical three-courtyard building with a garden. If the central corridor is used as the boundary, the left side of the corridor is an E-shaped three-courtyard building.

To the right of the corridor is a garden of about one acre. The starting point of the corridor is just behind the screen wall at the entrance, next to the main house in the first courtyard.

At present, only the first courtyard of the quadrangle is relatively intact, and the houses in the third and second courtyards are basically abandoned, with obvious signs of burning. It is believed that the Eight-Nation Alliance looted and set fire to the latter two courtyards after entering the city.

Let me introduce that in ancient times, the second and third courtyards were where the owner would receive guests and live with his family. The more valuable things were placed in the second and third courtyards, so they were severely damaged and completely beyond repair.

Note: Don’t worry about the yard being too big. Wang Li has a solution for this problem, which will be explained later. Thank you for your support!
