Chapter 11

Dear Daddy Long Legs:
You fell on deaf ears to my question, but that is very important to me.

Are you bald?
I drew your portrait - everything went well - but on top of your head, I'm stuck.I can't tell if your hair is white, black or gray, or completely bald.

Here is your portrait.

The question is, should I add some hair?

Do you want to know the color of your own eyes?Gray, with protruding eyebrows, like a veranda. The corners of the mouth droop like a straight line.Yes, you see I understand! You must be a spirited, grumpy old fellow.

(The church bells are ringing!)

At 9:45 in the evening, I made a strict rule for myself: never... never study homework at night, only read novels, even if there are many tests the next day-I have to do this. You know, I've wasted 18 years. You can't imagine, Uncle, how ignorant I am.I now realize my shallowness.A girl with a normal family, friends, and a library naturally knows a lot of things that I have never heard of.

For example:

I have never heard of "Mother Goose", "Bluebeard", "The Heroine", "Cinderella", "Robinson", "Jane Eyre", "Alice's Adventures" and Kipling's words Only words.I didn't know that Henry VIII remarried, that Shelley was a poet, that man's ancestors were monkeys, or that the Garden of Eden was a beautiful myth.I didn't know that RLS was short for Robert Louis Stevenson, or that George Eliot was originally a woman.I've never seen a painting called the Mona Lisa, (maybe you don't believe it, but it's true) haven't even heard of Sherlock Holmes.

Now, I know all of these things, and a whole bunch of other things. But lo and behold!I also had to work hard to keep up.oh!This is a funny thing!I look forward to the early dusk, hang the sign "Reading" at the door, put on a comfortable red nightgown and leather slippers, then pile the pillows on the back of the chair, turn on the desk lamp at hand, and immerse myself in reading...reading, Read on.

I felt that one book was not enough, so I found four books at the same time. Now, I read Tennyson's Vanity Fair and Kipling's Ordinary Stories. There is also "Little Women", please don't laugh at me.I found out that I was the only girl in college who hadn't seen Little Women.I didn't tell anyone though, I just sneaked out and bought it with the $4 allowance I had left over from last month. If anyone ever talks about pickled limes again, I know what they're talking about.

(The clock struck ten o'clock, and the letter was interrupted several times.)
