Chapter 26

Dear Daddy Long Legs:
How did your secretary know about Rockwillow Farm? (This is not a polite remark, I am really curious.) I heard that this farm used to belong to Mr. Jervie Pendleton. But then he gave the farm to his nanny, Mrs. Samp. What an interesting coincidence! She still calls him "Master Jervie" and says how lovely he was as a child. She treasured in the box a small lock of his curly hair as a child, which was red—or at least tinged!

Since she knew I knew Mr. Jervie Pendleton, she treated me differently.Knowing the members of the Pendleton family is the best introduction in Rockwillow. And the pride of the Pendletons is Master Jervie - I'm glad Julia belongs to the lower branch.

The farm is getting more and more interesting.Yesterday I got into the hay wagon. We have 3 big pigs and 9 piglets, you should see what they look like. What pigs they are!We have countless chicks, ducklings, turkeys and guinea fowl. It's unbelievable if you could live on a farm but choose to live in the city.

My daily job is to pick eggs.Yesterday in the barn, I tried to climb up the beam to touch a bird's nest (the black chicken secretly laid eggs there), but accidentally fell down. When I dragged my legs home, Mrs. Samp was bandaging me and said to herself: "My God! Master Jervie fell down there too, and he also hurt this knee. These things seem like yesterday." Same thing happened!"

The scenery here is beautiful. There is something to love about the valleys, rivers, lush hills and wild mountains in the distance.

Twice a week we made the cream and kept it in a stone cold room with a little river babbling underneath.Farmers nearby have degreasers, but we don't like the novelty and still stir in the pot, which is a bit more hassle but better quality and worth it.We have 6 cows and I have good names for them:

[-]. Sylvia, for she was born in the woods.

[-]. Lesbia, named after the noble lady in the works of Catullus.

[-]. Sally.

[-]. Julia, a spotted, featureless animal.

[-]. Judy, name it after me.

[-]. Daddy-Long-Legs.You are not angry, are you, uncle? The cows are pure Jersey and cute. That's what it looks like - and you see it lives up to its name.

I haven't had time to start my magnum opus yet, and the farm keeps me busy.

Also:

[-]. I learned how to make bagels.

Second, if you want to raise chickens, I recommend the Orpington breed, which does not grow hair on their legs.

Three, I really want to give you a piece of fresh cream I made yesterday, I have become a good milkmaid.

[-]. The following is the picture of the future great writer-Georosa Albert's cattle drive home:
