Chapter 4

Dear Daddy Long Legs:
I love college and I love you who sent me there - I'm really, really happy and sleepless with excitement all the time. You can't imagine the difference here from the John Gorier Orphanage.I can't think of such a good place in the world.I feel deeply sorry for those who are not girls and who cannot come to college.I am sure that your previous university must not have been so good.

My room was on the top floor, which had been used as an infectious ward before the new infirmary was built. There were three other girls on this floor—a bespectacled senior who always asked people to be quiet, and two freshmen, Sally Macbeth and Julia Pendleton.Sally was red-haired and had a turned-up nose, and was very nice.Julia comes from a famous New York family, and she hasn't noticed me yet.The two of them live in one room, and the senior girl and I live in a single room. There are very few single rooms in the school, and freshmen are generally not able to live in them, but I got one without asking.I think the people at the Registry don't think it's right for a well-bred girl to live with an orphan. You see, there are certain advantages!

My room is in the northwest corner, with two windows and a pleasant view from the windows.Having lived in the same dorm with 20 people for 18 years, I feel so relieved now that I have a room all to myself.I think this is a good opportunity to get to know Jerusha Albert again.

I think I'll like her, how about you?
