Chapter 49

Good morning!Big news!Guess what? You'll never, never, ever think who's coming to Rock Willow.Mr. Pendleton wrote to Mrs. Samp, saying that he was driving through Berkshire, and that if he was tired he would like to rest on the quiet farm.He asked if Mrs. Samp could have a room ready for him should he show up at the door one night. He might stay for a week, maybe two or three weeks, depending on the circumstances.

We frantically tidied up the whole house and washed all the curtains. This morning I had Connells buy some tarpaulins to put over the front door, and I painted the front and back floors with two cans of brown floor paint.Tomorrow we plan to ask Mrs. Todd to clean the windows (at this critical juncture we have to give up our suspicions about the piggy incident). You'd think that the house wasn't very clean, judging by our housecleaning, but I assure you, it's always been clean, damn clean.Although Mrs. Samp is not very learned, she is good at housekeeping.

Uncle, doesn't he look like a man?He did not disclose his whereabouts at all, making it unclear whether he came today or two weeks later.Everyone awaits his arrival with trepidation - if he doesn't hurry, we'll have to clean the house all over again.

The farmhands and Glover have already prepared the carriage and waited for me below.I drive the wagon myself--you've only got to look at old Grove and you won't worry about my safety.

Hands on chest to say goodbye to you.
