Chapter 57

Dear Daddy Long Legs:
Thank you for allowing me to come to Julia's house—silence, it seems to me, means approval.

During this time, our social activities are too frequent! There was the annual dance last week - I attended for the first time and it used to be only available to senior students.

I invited Jimmy Macbeth, and Sally invited Jimmy's Princeton roommate, the very nice red-haired guy they camped with last summer.Julia had invited a man from New York who had no personality but was socially impeccable because he was a Delamat Chichester. This news may mean something to you, but it means nothing to me.

On Friday afternoon, all our guests arrived.Have refreshments in the senior dormitory, then rush back to the hotel for dinner.Every hotel was so full that they had to sleep side by side at the dining table--that's what they said.Jimmy Macbeth said that if he is invited to a university social event next time, he must bring the climbing tent and set up camp on campus.

At 7:3, they attended the reception and dance given by the principal. Our party has started early! We prepared the men's cards in advance, and then asked them to wait in line together in alphabetical order of surnames. After each piece of music was danced, the next female dance partner would be easier to find him.Like Jimmy Macbeth, he was assigned to wait patiently in the M group until someone came to ask him. (He's always dangling, though, often running into the R or S groups).I found him to be a difficult guest, only to get annoyed that he only had [-] dances with me.He said he was embarrassed to dance with other girls he didn't know!
There's a choral concert the next morning and guess who wrote the hilarious new song?is her.Oh, I tell you, uncle, your little foundling is quite famous now!

Anyway, it was a really good two days, and I think the guys enjoyed it too.At the beginning, facing 1000 girls, some male guests were a little worried and cautious, but they quickly got used to it.The two guests from Princeton were delighted too—at least, they said so politely—and invited us to their ball next spring. We have agreed, so please don't object, dear uncle.

Julia, Sally, and I were all wearing new clothes.Do you want to know?Julia's cream satin gown was embellished with gold embroidery. The dress was made in Paris, it's dreamy, and I think it's worth at least a million dollars.Julia also carries purple orchids.

Sally was in a sky-blue dress with Persian lace to match her hair.Although the value is not $100 million, it achieves the same effect.

My dress was pale pink with rose lace trim and I was holding a rose from Jimmy Macbeth (Sally had already told him which color to buy).We all wore silk stockings, satin shoes, and tulle shawls of the appropriate colour.

You will be impressed by the details of these costumes!

Uncle, I think the dull life in the world of men is very sad.Come to think of it, scarves, Venetian lace, and Irish crochet meant nothing to them. And a woman, whether she likes children, husbands, Plato, little creatures, servants, poetry, parallelograms, gardens, or bridge, always and utterly loves clothes.

This is human nature, which can make the world into one family (this is not my first creation, it is taken from Shakespeare's play).

Also, there is another thing. Are you wondering about a secret I just discovered recently? You just have to make sure you don't think I'm vain, okay? Now listen up:
I am beautiful.

This is real.I have three mirrors in my room, and I'd be a fool if I couldn't even see that.

This is one of those nasty anonymous letters you read so often in fiction.
