Chapter 70

Dear Daddy Long Legs:
A dark cloud has descended on my writing career.Don't know if I should tell you, but I'm open to some sympathy -- silent sympathy. Please don't mention this in your next letter, so as not to irritate my wounds.

I spent a whole winter's night, and a summer's spare time teaching Latin to two stupid students, writing a novel.I just finished the manuscript before school started, and I sent it to the publishing house.Haven't heard back for two months and I believe they have taken it.However, yesterday morning the postal courier (3 cents) sent it back with a letter from the publisher - he is very kind and candid! He said that from my address, I was still studying, and he suggested that I start writing after graduation. He cites reader comments as follows:
"The structure is whimsical, the characters unreal, and the dialogue unnatural. The language is humorous, but not tasteful. If she keeps working hard, she might be able to write a decent book."

Nothing good, is it, uncle?I thought I could add a glorious touch to the history of American literature, and I really did.Originally, I planned to write a great book before graduation, which can surprise you.The material was collected when I was a guest at Julia's house last year. But I admit that the editor's opinion of the publishing house is very pertinent. It is definitely not enough to observe the style and customs of a big city for two weeks.

Yesterday I went for a walk with my manuscript. As I passed the gas station, I ran in and asked the worker if I could borrow his stove. He opened the furnace door enthusiastically, and I threw the manuscript in with my own hands, feeling as if my child was being burned.

I go to bed at night with a distraught feeling that I might be doing nothing and wasting your money. But guess what?I woke up this morning with a really wonderful new idea in my head.I spent the whole day arranging new characters in the production, and I couldn't be more excited.I shouldn't be pessimistic.Even if one day in the future my husband and all 12 children are killed in an earthquake, I will still smile the next day and cheer up to start a new life.

Affectionate Judy
