Chapter 7 How to be a Competent Boss - Basic Common Sense and Elements of Management (7)

[-]. Full trust and scientific authorization for employees

In this section we will explore a sensitive topic in enterprise management - authorization.

What is authorization? It is very simple to say, that is, the boss does not do some business that he can do, but lets the employees do it; he ignores some things that he can manage, and assigns them to the corresponding responsible person.

Why is authorization necessary?Because we live in a society where high efficiency and high output can only be achieved by division of labor and collaboration. However, there are not many bosses who are truly daring and good at scientific decentralization and authorization, especially in today's booming private economy.

We have seen that many bosses like to do everything by themselves and take all the power. What is the result of this?Things backfired. On the one hand, the boss himself is exhausted all day long, and his quality of life and quality of life are severely reduced; What's more terrible is that more and more truly capable people in the enterprise are leaving. Why is there such a vicious circle? It is necessary for us to explore the essence behind the phenomenon.

1. Analysis of the reasons why the boss refuses to authorize

(1) The boss pursues too much the sense of accomplishment of having power
According to my observation, many people who start their own businesses and become their own bosses are just being bosses for the sake of being bosses. In other words, these people have no idea what the company is doing, what their business can provide to consumers, or how the business survives and develops. They start a business more to seek the pleasure of being a boss, and the pleasure of giving orders to employees to do what they do, and they call it "being able to control their own destiny".

Of course, it is impossible for such a boss to authorize managers.

(2) The boss deeply distrusts the employees
Do not trust employees is not at ease. Some bosses are worried about employees, especially managers, and feel that they must do better than managers, so they are unwilling to delegate power. Some bosses delegate power on the surface, but once they really encounter a situation, they rush to the front line to fight in person, or the boss bypasses the managerial level and directly implements management downwards, making the managerial level seem to be in vain.

Some bosses even have misconceptions about the concept of wealth, for fear that once the manager is authorized, they will use power for personal gain, thus causing losses to their own assets.By the way, even if some bosses did suffer from being deceived by managers or employees after authorization, the root of the problem is not authorization, but failure to achieve scientific authorization, and losses caused by loopholes in management.

2. How to achieve scientific authorization
Merit rather than cronyism.

If the authorization is granted, but something goes wrong in the end, the primary reason is that the boss gave the power to an incompetent person at the beginning, and the responsibility is of course the boss.Appointment and authorization are the same thing, 'virtuous' is the only criterion, simply put, it is loyalty + ability. Therefore, finding, cultivating, and appointing loyal and capable employees is the core of the boss's work.

Be sure to let the authorized person know how much power and responsibility he has.

How to implement this? The following questions need to be clearly answered by the authorized person:

"What is the goal of the work you want to accomplish?"

"Who is your immediate supervisor, i.e. who are you accountable to?"

"What kind of things have to be decided by yourself without asking for instructions in advance?"

"What kind of things you absolutely can't make a decision on your own and must ask for instructions in advance?"

"How much authority do you have in terms of personnel?"

"How much authority do you have over the use and deployment of company funds and materials?"

Be sure to let the authorized person know the responsibilities and obligations corresponding to the rights he has.

The authorized person should be able to clearly answer the following two questions:

"What rewards will you receive for completing tasks or work goals?"

"What is the penalty for not meeting tasks or work objectives?"

The boss's delegating power to cadres at all levels does not mean letting them go, and the boss's authorization of managers does not mean abstaining from power.

Some failed authorizations are due to the fact that after the authorization, the boss thought that he was done and could sit back and relax, so he stopped interfering in the authorized company affairs and became a hands-off shopkeeper. In fact, before the authorization, the boss must establish a system and standards for evaluating the performance of the authorized person in advance, and after the authorization, he will work tirelessly to supervise and inspect the authorized person, and provide necessary guidance and assistance. Strive to discover problems in time and solve them.

The above mentioned are just some basic requirements for scientific authorization.

Case story:

We all know that Bill Gates is the world's richest man with tens of billions of dollars in assets, but in fact at least half of his wealth is in stocks.Compared with him, the sons of Sam Walton, the founder of the world's retail giant Wal-Mart Group, have much more cash in their pockets than Gates.
