Chapter 847 The Will of the Broken Sword
Chapter 847 The Will of the Broken Sword
"After she regained her strength, she asked to work in the fields," the old man continued. "My wife and I are getting old. We are happy to have her help."
"Aren't you and your wife afraid of dying?"
"This girl wants nothing more to do with Noxus. She hates Noxus."
"Did she tell you so?"
"No," he said. "She didn't talk about her past. Sawa asked once, but she didn't say anything. We found it painful for her to ask, so we didn't ask again."
"If she didn't say anything, how did you find out about her feelings for her country?"
Master Kong De wiped his old eyes.
Maura saw his sad face, as if it was not his turn to say the words just now.He suddenly realized that there were other people listening around him, and he sped up his speech.
"Talks in a fever's sleep, magistrate," he said. "The night she came. Something that belonged to her, something she held dear, was destroyed. So she was cursing Noxus."
"Do you know what she was talking about?"
"I should have guessed correctly, magistrate." The old man nodded slowly. "Her hilt and scabbard are tangled. Four days ago I saw her untie it. I saw that the sword was broken."
Maura thought that the only fat cat that had seen her in the barn that day was the cat catching mice.
Some began to murmur derision at the quality of Noxus' weaponry.
"What did you do after receiving this information, Monsieur Comte?"
"I took the sword to the temple."
The judge turned his head and looked down at the old man along the falcon's beak-like nose. "What are you going to do?"
"I hope the priests can fix it. If this sword can be recast, she can also get rid of some ghosts from the past." These words made the crowd erupt immediately, but the old man kept looking at Maura and the shackles on her hands .
"I hope she finds some peace in the moment."
"Thank you, Mr. Comte, for your testimony to this court," said the judge, and his stern eyes made the crowd quiet. "Your speech is over."
She glanced at the unfolded parchment, then turned to the judge.
"Evidence."
Maura watched as two temple priests carried a huge wooden tray, with lavender frilly cloth hanging from it, and placed it carefully on the table in front of the judge.
A warrior-priest stepped forward, the delicate grooves around the edges of his wooden shoulder and breastplate a sign of higher rank.
"Come out," said the judge.
The warrior priest removed the lavender-colored cover, revealing a sword and scabbard wider than a kite shield.
The scabbard was inscribed with crude strokes of Noxus.
Compared with the soft lines of the Ionian characters, the sharp-edged and blunt strokes are particularly abrupt.
But the attention of the judges was not on the scabbard and the inscription, but on the blade itself.
Such a heavy sword, even for this well-trained temple priest, would cause people to worry about breaking their arms just by lifting it, so it is even more difficult to imagine how the slender wrists in front of them wield it.
Indeed, even Maura herself had the same thought when she saw it for the first time.
Now, this is no longer a complete sword, it has been brutally shattered into many pieces, like a monster's giant claws cutting through the flesh of metal.
Five of the largest fragments, each of which would have been enough to take a man's life on its own, now rested on the Ionian satin, forbidding even in tatters.
The judge looked at Maura and said. "This weapon is yours."
Maura nodded.
"I think it's a bit difficult to fight with it in its current state," the judge said to himself.
There were a few snickers from the crowd.
said the warrior priest uneasily. "This weapon is enchanted, Judge. The Noxians have enchanted the sword."
His tone was full of disgust.
Maura wondered if the judge was listening to the priest.
The magistrate nodded thoughtfully, and scanned the sword carefully until he found the corner that Maura didn't want to face the most, the vacancy that Maura was always looking for.
The judge's hooked nose twitched.
"There's a piece missing from the sword."
A young temple steward trembled nervously in front of the council hall.
"Doctor, is this weapon presented to the temple by Master Kong De?" asked the leading judge.
"Yes, Judge."
"Were you the one who reported it to this court?"
"Yes, Judge."
"How did you know we'd be interested in this weapon?"
Maura saw the hall attendant wipe the sweat from his hands on his long sleeves.
His face was pale, and he looked as if he might faint at any moment, or vomit on the stone floor.
"Doctor?" the judge asked urgently.
"I'm a bonewasher, magistrate." The young man's voice trembled.
His hands hung limply like burnt candles.
"The remains of the elders. After their bodies were buried in the sky, I took back the bones and processed them."
"I know what a bonewasher does, clerk. What does that have to do with weapons?"
"Same sword."
A momentary doubt floated across the judge's face.
The same bewilderment hangs on everyone's faces, and everyone looks at each other, not knowing what to say.But Maura felt a kind of uneasiness gradually creeping up in her heart.
"When I dealt with the remains of Elder Suma, I meant to give it to the temple after his death." The hall servant spoke incoherently, which made it difficult for many people to understand.
He did not continue, but took out a silk bag from the pocket of his robe, and began to untie the knot with his slender fingers.
He took a metal shard out of his bag and held it up. "This piece of metal, Judge. It's the same as the broken sword."
The hall servant hurriedly ran from his seat to the judge.
She took the fragments from his hand, held them with her fingertips, and looked through them carefully.Even from a distance, the piece of metal looks very similar to a broken sword.
Maura couldn't breathe.
This is the fragment she had worked so hard to find, but finally gave up.Now it was coming together, lighting up the dark, forgotten corners of her mind.
Maura's sins were buried deeply, and now they are finally about to be seen again.
Maura knew what was going to happen next, and she made up her mind to bite the bullet and wait for the fate to come.
"Where did you find this?" asked the judge.
The hall servant cleared his throat. "At Elder Suma's cervical vertebrae."
There was a gasp from the council hall.
"Why didn't you submit it before?" The judge's eyes were fixed on her target.
"I have been here," said the steward, his eyes trying to avoid the warrior priest standing next to the broken sword. "But Master says it doesn't matter."
The judge did not need to avoid the warrior priest in the slightest.
"You come," she ordered. She gave the shard of metal to the warrior priest. "Putting it together with the rest."
The warrior priest glared at the steward, but accepted the order anyway.
He walked towards Maura's broken sword, turning to the magistrate at the last moment and saying, "Mister, this weapon is imbued with black magic. We don't know what this fragment will bring."
"Follow the execution." The judge's tone was unquestionable.
