Chapter 4
Three or four months have passed like this, and it is already winter.I go to school almost every day. I have learned something. I can spell words, read, write and write. I can't go down.Anyway, I don't like mathematics.
At first I hated that school, but then I gradually became able to bear it.I was so tired of going to school, so I played truant, and it was a pleasure to be whipped the next day. Therefore, the longer you go to school, the easier it is to deal with school affairs.I'm getting used to the widow thing too, and it doesn't bother me so much.Living in a house and sleeping in a bunk is really suffocating, I feel that way every day, but before the weather turns cold, I often sneak out to the woods to sleep, and that's the rest .I liked the way I used to live, but gradually I also liked the way I live now.The widow said that I made progress, slowly but steadily, and she was quite satisfied with me, saying that I did not embarrass her.
One morning when I was having breakfast, I accidentally knocked over the salt shaker, so I hurriedly reached out to pinch some salt and throw it behind my left shoulder to avoid bad luck. But Miss Watson moved faster than me, and stopped me with her hand. She said, "Take your hands off, Huckleberry—what a mess you always make." The widow put in a good word for me, but I knew it was no use, and I knew better than that But that's all. After eating, I went out, worrying and frightened all the way, not sure how long this bad luck would fall on me, and also not sure what it would be.Some misfortunes have ways of avoiding them, but this one was different; so I tried nothing, but wandered on, dejected and apprehensive.
I went to the garden in front of the house, climbed the wooden ladder, and climbed over the high wooden fence. There was an inch of fresh snow on the ground, and I could see the tracks of a few pedestrians in the snow. The person who left the footprints came from the quarry, walked around the wooden ladder, and walked around the fence. What a strange thing, they walked around for a long time, but didn't come in.I really can't figure it out, and I always feel that this matter is very strange.I was planning to follow the footprints for a while, but on second thought, I might as well squat down and look at the footprints first. At first glance, there is nothing special, but upon closer inspection, the footprints caught my attention: there is a cross made of big iron nails on the heel of the left boot, which is used to ward off evil spirits.
I immediately stood up and ran, running down the mountain in a hurry. He looked back while running, but he didn't see anyone.I ran to Judge Thatcher in one breath. He said:
"Well, my boy, look at you, out of breath. Are you here to get interest?"
"No, sir," said I, "but shall I have some interest?"
"Oh, yes, I received half a year's interest last night. 150 yuan, this is a lot of money for you. You'd better let me add this money to your 6000 yuan capital Loan, if you take it, you will spend it all."
"No, sir," I said, "I don't want to spend the money, I don't want the money at all, and I don't want the $6000. I want you to take the money; I want to give you--$6000, even This comes with a profit."
He looked surprised, as if he didn't understand. He said:
"Why, what do you mean, my child?"
I said, "Please don't ask me anything about it. You'll take it, right?"
He said, "Well, I don't understand that. Is there something wrong?"
"Take it, please," I said, "and don't ask me anything—so I won't tell a lie."
He pondered for a while, and then said:
"Oh, oh, I see. You're trying to sell me all your property, not give it to me. That's right."
After that, he wrote something on the paper, read it over, and said to me again:
"See, here it says 'for consideration.' That means I bought it from you, and paid you. Here's a dollar for you. Now, sign it."
So I signed and left.
Miss Watson's nigger, Jim, has a fist-sized hairball taken out of a cow's fourth stomach, and he keeps doing magic with it.He said there was an elf inside the furball that knew everything. So I found him that night and told him my dad was here again and I saw his footprints in the snow. What I want to know is why is he here, is he going to stay forever?Jim took out his furball, said something to it, and held it up, letting it fall to the floor. The fur ball landed firmly on the ground, rolling only an inch sideways.Jim tried again, and then a third time, all three times in succession.Jim knelt on the ground and picked up the fur ball, put his ear on it and listened for a while. But it was no use; he said the furball wouldn't talk, and that sometimes it wouldn't talk unless paid.
I told him I had a counterfeit quarter in silver that was old and slippery and it just didn't work because a little bit of the copper was showing under the silver plating and it couldn't be hidden from anyone, even if the copper wasn't showing , because it is too slippery, as if it is oiled, so it must show its feet every time. (I decided not to mention the dollar I got from the judge.) I said the little money was useless, but maybe the furball would want it, because it probably couldn't tell the difference between real and fake.Jim took the fake silver coin, smelled it, bit it, wiped it, and then said that he had to figure out a way to make the furball accept it as good money. He said he would break open a raw potato, put silver coins in it, and leave it there overnight, and the next morning he wouldn't see any copper on it, and he wouldn't feel any oil on it, and then everybody in town would Recognize the money now, let alone the hairball.Hi, I knew I could use potatoes, but I just forgot.
Jim put the fake money under the furball and knelt down and listened again. This time he said the furball was all right, and that it could tell my fate if I would listen.I said let's talk about it.So Fuzzy told Jim, and Jim told me.He said:
"Your father doesn't know what to do right now. He says he wants to go, and he wants to stay. It's best to keep silent and let the old man do what he wants. There are two angels flying around him, one blindingly white, and the other Black does not slip away. The white leads him on the right path, and after a while, the black stops him. Right now, no one can say which one will catch him. But you are fine. You are destined to have many disasters and good luck Congratulations. Sometimes you will be injured, sometimes you will be sick; but every time you can turn bad luck into good luck, and good luck in death. In your life, there are two women, black and white. The white is rich, and the black is poor. You marry the poor first Girl, continue to marry a rich girl. The farther you stay away from the water, the better, and you must not take risks, because it is clearly written in the book of life and death that you will be hanged."
That night, I lit a candle, and as soon as I entered my room, I saw my father sitting there, and yes, it was him!
