letter thirteen
In this letter, Helen Keller tells about her visit to friends, which shows that she is far more mature than an ordinary eight-year-old child.Perhaps, her cheerful nature is only revealed in the presence of brave young gentlemen.
To Mrs Kate Adams Keller
South Boston, Massachusetts, September 1888, 9
Dear Mom:
I think you'd like to hear from me about visiting West Newtown. My teacher and I had a great time with many kind friends.West Newtown is not too far from Boston, and it didn't take us long to get there by train.
Mrs. Freeman, Carly, Ethel, and Frank met us in a "jumbo car" at the station.I was so happy to see my dear children, I hugged and kissed them one by one. Then we traveled all over West Newton in a horse-drawn carriage. We saw many very beautiful houses, huge soft green lawns surrounding the houses, many trees, bright flowers and fountains. The horse that pulls the cart is called "Prince", and it is a very docile horse that likes to trot and walk. When we got home, we saw eight rabbits, two fat puppies, a beautiful white pony, two kittens and a cute poodle named "Don".The name of the little pony is "Molly", and I ride on its back leisurely without feeling scared at all. I wish my uncle would buy me a little pony and a pony carriage sooner.
Clifton didn't kiss me because he was shy and didn't like kissing little girls. To my delight Frank, Clarence, Robbie, Eddie, and George were not all shy.I also play with many little girls.I rode Carly's tricycle, scurrying around like dancing, we picked wild flowers and ate fruits. There are many ladies and gentlemen who come to see us.Lucy, Dora and Charles were born in China.I was born in America.Mr Ananos was born in Greece.Mr. Drew said that the little girls in China can't "speak" with their fingers, but I think one day, when I go to China, I will teach them.A Chinese nanny named "Asu" also came to see me.She showed me a Chinese lady's shoe, very small because their feet never grow big."Grandma" in Chinese means nanny. We went home by carriage as it was a Sunday and the trains don't usually run on Sundays. The conductors and train drivers are so tired they need to go home and rest.I met little Willie Swan in the car, he gave me a juicy and sweet duck pear, he was six years old. What did I do when I was six years old?You let papa come to see me and the teacher by train, I am so sorry that both Eva and Bessie have fallen ill.I hope I can have a great birthday party and I want Carly, Ethel, Frank and Helen to all visit me in Alabama. Will Mildred sleep with me when I come home?Has she grown up?
Sending my deepest love and a thousand kisses.

letter fourteen
Helen visited Plymouth in July. This letter was written by Helen Keller in October, and she showed us her deep memory of her first history lesson with a real brush.
To Mr Morrison Heady
South Boston, Massachusetts, October 1888, 10
Dear Uncle Murray, I suppose you are delighted to have a letter from your dear little friend Helen. It is my pleasure to write to you because I miss you so much and love you.In the books you sent me, I read many beautiful stories, such as "Charles and His Boat", "Arthur and His Dreams", "Rosa and the Sheep" and I like them very much.
I've been on a ship as grand as a man-of-war.Mum, the teacher, Mrs. Hopkins, Mr. Ananos, Mr. Rodukanage and many other friends have all come to Plymouth to visit the ancient ruins here.Next I want to tell you a little story about Plymouth.
Long ago, there lived many good people in England. But the king is not kind to these good people at all, because the subjects here always disobey his orders-the subjects don't want to go to church with the king, they prefer to worship alone in beautiful chapels built for themselves.
Faced with the king's unfriendly treatment, the subjects said with regret: We have to leave our lovely home and relatives and friends, stay away from the bad king, and go to live in a strange land. So, they packed all their belongings into big boxes, and cried, saying goodbye, hometown.I really feel sorry for them. Then they came to Holland, but they didn't know anyone. They also don't know what people are talking about here because they don't understand Dutch. But they quickly learned some Dutch, but they love their own language more, and they don't want their next generation to forget their own language and learn to speak ridiculous Dutch. So they said again: We must move to a distant new land, where we will build schools, houses, churches, and new cities. So they packed all their belongings into many big boxes, said goodbye to their new friends, and sailed a big ship to find a new paradise.
The hearts of these poor people were full of sorrow, for they did not know much about America, and therefore they were sullen.I think, facing the rough sea, their children will definitely be afraid. When the big boat shakes on the sea, the children will fall on the boat and smash their heads. After many weeks of sailing, they still saw no trees, flowers or grass, only sea water and a beautiful blue sky around them.Because people at that time didn't understand engines and steam (power) so the boats moved very slowly. One day a lovely boy named Peregrine White was born on board.Sadly that poor little Peregrine is now dead.
People come to the deck every day in search of land. Finally one day people saw the land, and everyone cheered, and then people arrived safely in this new continent. The little girls and boys jumped up and clapped their hands for joy. They stepped onto a boulder on the shore, and everyone was very happy.I saw this rock in Plymouth, and I saw the ship they were on, a little boat that looked like the Mayflower, and the cradle that cute little Peregrine slept in, and a lot Old stuff from the Mayflower.Do come to Plymouth at your convenience to check out these vintage items.
Now I'm so tired I'm going to bed.
Sending you deep love and countless kisses.

Foreign language vocabulary appears in the following two letters.Among them, the first letter was written by Helen Keller during her visit to a kindergarten for blind children. Her family had talked about it a few months ago, so this matter has been deeply buried in Helen Keller's life. in memory.Helen Keller not only digested these words, but also tried to use them, but sometimes she used them appropriately, and sometimes she used them very bluntly.
Although she can't fully understand the words or thoughts of adults, she is willing to write them down and treat them as her own.It was in this way that she not only learned the correct pronunciation of the words, but also the technique of expressing her personal experiences in these words. It is also worth mentioning that by "Edith" the letter refers to Edith Thomas.
To Mr. Michael Ananos
Roxbury, Massachusetts, October 1888, 10
Mon cher Monsieur Anagnos:
I am sitting by the window now, the soft sunlight is shining on me, warm.My teacher and I went to the kindergarten yesterday. There were 27 kids there and they were all blind.I felt sorry for them because they couldn't see anything.Hopefully someday in the future they will be able to see things.Edith was poor blind and deaf and dumb, like me.Are you particularly sorry for us?
I will be able to go home and see my mother, father and my cute and well-behaved little sister soon. From the bottom of my heart I wish you could come and see me in Alabama and I'd take you in my pony buggy, I think you'd love to see me on the pony's back.I'll be wearing my new knight outfit with a cute hat.If it's sunny, I'll take you to meet Lila, Eva, and Bessie. When I was 13 years old, I traveled to many strange and beautiful countries.I'm going to Norway to see snow and ice and climb very tall mountains.Hope I don't fall or get hurt.I am going to visit "Little Lord Fauntleroy" in England, and he will be glad to show me his old and magnificent castle. We will also chase wild deer, feed bunnies and catch squirrels.I'm not at all afraid of "Doug" the big dog next to "Fauntleroy".I also hope that Fauntleroy will take me to meet the kind queen. When I get to France, I talk to people in French.
A little French boy would ask: Parlez-vous Francais?
I replied: Oui, Monsieur, vous avez un joli chapeau. Donnez moi unbaiser.
I would also like you to come with me to Athens to visit "The Maid of Athens".She is a very lovely lady and I hope I can speak to her in Greek then.
Well, I'm too tired and exhausted now, so I won't continue writing.
Je vous aime. Au revoir.

To Mrs. Sophia C. Hopkins:
Tuscumbia, Alabama, June 1888, 12
Dear Mrs. Hopkins:
I just finished feeding my beautiful little pigeons. This pigeon was given to me last Sunday by my cousin Simpson.I named the pigeon "Annie" after my teacher. My dog has finished his dinner and gone to bed.My little bunnies fell asleep too. After a while I have to go to bed too.The teacher is writing letters to her friends.Mother, father, and their friends all went to see the great furnace, which was used for smelting iron.Iron ore can be found under the ground, but the iron ore cannot be used yet. The stone must be sent to the furnace to be melted, so that all the soil can be removed, leaving only pure iron. This is how people made locomotives, stoves, kettles, and many other things out of iron.
Coal is hidden under the ground.A long time ago, before man came on the earth, many big trees and tall grass and huge ferns and all the beautiful flowers were covered with earth. When trees fall, water and soil bury them. Then more trees grow and fall, and these trees are buried by water and soil.So the plants were all crowded together, and after millions of years the underground trees were hard as rocks, and they could be burned for warmth. Can you see leaf bracken and bark marks in the coal?Men would go down into the ground to dig coal, steam trains would carry coal to the big cities, and when the weather turned cold, people would happily burn coal for warmth.
Do you feel particularly lonely and sad right now?I hope you will come to see me soon and live with us for a while.
Sending my deep love, your little friend

To Miss Della Bennett
Tuscumbia, Alabama, June 1889, 1
It gives me great pleasure to write to you, dear Miss Bennett. We just finished breakfast.Mildred was running wild up and down the stairs.I'm currently reading a book about astronomers. The word Astronomer comes from the Latin Astra, which means "star".Astronomers are the ones who study the stars, the ones who tell us their secrets. While we were sleeping soundly in our beds, they would watch the beautiful sky through a telescope.A telescope is like a powerful eye, and the stars are so far away that one cannot learn more about what they really are without the help of instruments.Do you also like looking at the little stars in the sky through the window? The teacher said that she could see the big and bright Venus outside the window. The earth is also a star, and people call other stars the brothers and sisters of the earth.
In addition to the instruments used by astronomers called tools, there are many other tools in the world. For example, a knife is a tool for cutting.I think clocks can also be called tools. Now I want to tell you about the clock I know.
Some bells sound pleasant and can be used to play music, while others do not. Some clocks are very small and some are very large.I saw a very large clock from Japan at Wellesley College.Clocks are used in many ways, they can tell us when it's time for breakfast, when it's time to leave for school, when it's time to go to church, or when there's a fire. They can also tell people when to go to work and when to go home to rest. The steam clock (steam whistle) can tell passengers when the train is coming in, or remind people to stay away from the railway to ensure safety.Sometimes there are terrible accidents, such as when many people are injured in fires and floods, and the steam bell (steam whistle) will also sound. My doll got hurt the other day - I broke its head off, but it wasn't a terrible accident, because dolls don't have life and feelings like people do.My little pigeons are very well-behaved, and the birds are also very obedient.I also want to use some clay to make small animals. The teacher said that I have to study now, so I will talk next time, goodbye.
Send my deep love, and countless kisses.
