Chapter 3 To Chinese Readers
(Preface to the Collection of Agatha Christie's Works by Midnight Library Edition)
We've been working on two very important Agatha Christie anniversaries over the past few years.120 is her [-]th birthday - she was born in Torquay, England in [-]; [-] is her debut novel "The Mysterious Case of Stiles Manor". On the centennial day, her most famous detective, Hercule Poirot, makes her debut in this book.So it is just the right time for Xinxing Press to launch a new edition of Christie's works for Chinese readers, and I am very pleased that HarperCollins has chosen Xinxing to publish this new edition.New Star Publishing House is the best detective novel publishing house in China, with a strong and professional editorial team and a great passion for Agatha Christie's works, which makes them the ideal partner for us.Now is an opportune time to retranslate these classics into more modern and authoritative editions, giving her Chinese fans a reason to relive these much-loved stories while also introducing them to new readers. readers. How happy Agatha Christie would have been to know that her little stories (as she called them herself) still provide such great reading enjoyment to so many people in the world!
I think there are two very important features of Agatha Christie's work.First of all they are very comprehensible. No matter which language it is presented in, the stories and plots are equally thrilling, the mysteries presented to the reader are equally exciting, and the charm of the characters in the book is not affected in the slightest.I am absolutely sure that Chinese readers can enjoy Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple as much as we British; Chinese readers will also read the greatest detective classics of the twentieth century as we do When writing works—such as "And There Were None"—I was firmly nailed in place by shock and horror.
The second feature is that these stories give us a wonderful picture of England, especially the English countryside in Agatha Christie's time. She wrote between the 20s and the 70s, though it's sometimes hard to tell which period of her life each book was written in.The characters in her works, as well as their lives, are more or less similar. Our lives change rapidly these days, but "The World of Agatha Christie" remains timeless.Perhaps Miss Marple's story provides the best example: "The Library Woman" and "The Nemesis" look similar, but they were actually created 30 years apart.
Finally, I would like to mention three books that, in my opinion (besides the ones mentioned above) best illustrate why Christie remains beloved. The first is Murder on the Orient Express, the most famous and also the most witty and humane book. When you travel long distances by train in China, you might as well take it out and read it!The second is "Murder Notice", a series of stories by Miss Marple, which is also Christie's book. The shenanigans in this book are my personal favourites. And finally there's "The Long Night," a story about how evil affects the lives of three young men. This book was written at the time when I knew her best.I could feel that she cared deeply about young people and the world they live in.
Now Nova Press is re-dedicating these stories to readers. No matter which one is your favorite, I hope you can feel this joy.I believe this is a great event in the publishing world.
