Chapter 12: A Clash at the Head——If you don’t write about it, you will pass it on outside the classroom (6)
Zen Master Qinglin said: "The sun will not hide from people to see, because since it is the sun, it must permeate the world of mortals."

Dongshan Chan Master Yinke said: "You have to take care of yourself so that you can take care of yourself!"

So Zen Master Dongshan sent Zen Master Qinglin out of the mountain gate. When they parted, Zen Master Dongshan suddenly said, "Can you express your feelings about this long journey in one sentence?"

Zen Master Qinglin said without hesitation: "Every step in the world of mortals, there is no image in the whole body."

Zen Master Dongshan pondered for a long time.Zen Master Qinglin asked, "Teacher, why don't you speak?"

Zen Master Dongshan replied with a question: "I have said so many things to you, why do you falsely accuse me of not speaking?"

Zen Master Qinglin knelt down and said, "I didn't hear what you said, and I heard what you didn't say."

Zen Master Dongshan helped Zen Master Qinglin and said, "Go! You can go to a place where there is no talk or sign."

■Sentiment——

Zen masters are very serious. They are not lying. They clearly say that they did not hear what others said. When others did not say it, they said that they heard it. This is a very intriguing Zen state. In fact, he has already learned profound Zen principles when he hears speeches without words.

easy to teach
Chan Master Wu Nan was a gambling, alcoholic, irresponsible prodigal before he entered the Zen school. It was not until one day he was influenced by Chan Master Yutang that he changed his past and devoted himself to Zen.

Wunan has only one heir named Zhengshou. After Zhengshou completed his studies, Wunan called him to see him: "Here is a book that has been passed down from generation to generation and taught from teacher to teacher. It has been seven generations. I have also added a lot of my views based on my understanding. Now I will give it to you to show the meaning of inheritance."

"You'd better keep it to yourself!"

Zhengshou calmly refused, and explained: "What I accept is your non-literal Zen, and I like this true face."

"In this case, it has been passed on, but you might as well keep it as a symbol of accepting this law. Take it!"

Zheng accepted the book and threw it into the stove.

Seeing Wu Di, he couldn't help shouting, "What are you doing?"

"What are you talking about?" Zheng Shou shouted back.

Wu Nan looked at Zheng Shou in surprise, and suddenly felt peaceful.

But in an instant, the teaching book was burned to ashes.

■Sentiment——

The teaching of Zen has always been connected from heart to heart, and has never been written.Maybe no difficulty is the last test!Or it may be that right feelings are inherently superior to no difficulties.Anyway, what is the use of books, they can only make people attached to the devil of words, even if they are burned.

This is it
A monk asked Dongshan, "Did my master Yunyan ever say 'this is it?'"

Dongshan replied, "Yes."

The other party asked again: "Do you know what he means?"

Dongshan replied: "At that time, I almost got him wrong!"

The other party asked again: "I don't know if the teacher himself knew that there is this?"

Dongshan replied: "If he didn't know 'yes', how could he say that; if he knew 'yes', how could he be willing to say that."

■Sentiment——

The so-called "this" refers to the real self, and "you" refers to the real existence.Strictly speaking, neither Self nor Being can be expressed in words. Therefore, when a person realizes the true self or reality, he also realizes that this cannot be expressed in words, and even the word "this" is too superfluous. Here, we can see what Dongshan hinted to the other party, and he let him think for himself, to find the answer by himself.

which mountain can live
One day, Dongshan Liangji asked, "Where did you go?"

Daoying replied, "I went to step on the mountain."

Dongshan Liangjia asked, "Which mountain can I live in?"

Dao Ying asked, "Which mountain is not suitable for living?"

Dongshan Liangjia said, "Then all the mountains in the world will be taken by you."

Dao Ying said: "No."

Dongshan Liangjia asked, "So you found the way into the mountain?"

Daoying replied: "There is no way."

Dongshan Liangjia asked, "If there is no way, how can you meet the old monk?"

Dao Ying replied: "If there is a road, it will be separated from you by a mountain."

Dongshan Liangjia praised: "This guy Daoying, even thousands of people will not be able to stop him from now on."

■Sentiment——

There is no way because our heart does not need a way at all; and there is a way when we are looking for a way, that is, our heart is cut off and blocked by the "road". The distance between nature and people is like a distance. up a mountain.

who are our descendants

Zen Master Tianhuang Daowu studied with Zen Master Jingshan for five years, and wandered around. When he wandered to Shitou Xiqian's Taoist temple, he asked for instructions: "If you transcend Dinghui, what else can you tell others?"

Zen Master Shitou replied: "There is no bondage or oppression here. When we talk about detachment, what do we want to be detached?"

Zen Master Daowu was dissatisfied with such an answer, and said, "How can you teach people to understand what you say?"

Zen Master Shitou asked, "Do you understand the 'Prajna Vacuum'?"

Zen Master Daowu nodded and said, "I have already learned about this point. The so-called vacuum does not hinder the wonderful existence, and the wonderful existence does not hinder the vacuum."

Zen Master Shitou expressed his disappointment and said, "Unexpectedly, you are also from there!"

Zen Master Daowu quickly denied it and said, "I am not from there! Because there is 'over there', there is 'this side'. Do you mean that there is still a trace of my origin?"

Zen Master Shitou said affirmatively, "I already knew where you came from."

Dao Wu replied: "You have no evidence, why are you slandering me!"

Zen Master Shitou laughed loudly, pointed at Daowu and said, "Your body is the proof, isn't there a source for that?"

Tianhuang Daowu lowered his head, pondered for a long time, and then asked Zen Master Shitou Xiqian: "Although you say so, the place comes from him, and the place comes from him. Now I just ask you to tell me what we should use to enlighten me. What about the posterity?"

Zen Master Shitou shouted loudly: "Excuse me! Who are our descendants?"

Zen Master Tianhuang Daowu suddenly realized what he said.

■Sentiment——

Zen Master Shitou Xiqian and Zen Master Tianhuangdao talked about this and that, mainly referring to the meaning of circulation in the cycle of life and death. "I know where you came from." This means that he is still in the confusion of life and death. After deep thinking, Emperor Dogo admits that he has not detached himself, so he said: "The place where you come from comes from him, and the place you go to goes from him." This is the meaning of life and death, but Tianhuang Daowu is also concerned about future generations, before and after, life and death, how can life and death be achieved? No wonder Zen Master Shitou asked: "Who are our descendants?"

turn off

Monk Cuiwei once served as the abbot in the Buddhist monastery of his teacher Xuefeng. One day, it happened to be the last day of Xia's residence, and he said to the monks: "During the ninety days of the residence, I have been teaching the Dharma to my brothers. I am very worried that if I talk too much, I will be punished by my Buddha, and I will lose my eyebrows." Please help me see if I still have eyebrows."

The monk Baofu from the same school said: "It's a guilty conscience to be a thief."

Changqing said: "Not only did it not fall off, but it also grew and became denser."

Yunmen finally said: "Close."

■Sentiment——

"Close" refers to the function of the whole. With a single sound, he even forgot himself, and reached the realm of harmony between man and nature.

Clouds in the sky and water in the bottle

Li Ao, governor of Langzhou in the Tang Dynasty, was very yearning for the virtue of Chan Master Yaoshan Weiyan. One day he went to pay a visit in person, and happened to meet Zen Master reading scriptures under a tree by the mountain.Although he knew that the prefect was coming, the Zen master still had no intention of welcoming him. The attendant reminded him, but he still focused on the scriptures.

Seeing Zen Master's indifferent attitude, Li Taishou couldn't help scolding him angrily: "It's better to be famous than to meet!"

After finishing speaking, he threw up his sleeves and wanted to leave, but Zen Master Weiyan suddenly said coldly: "Why are the eunuchs so expensive?"

With just one sentence, Li Taishou was moved by it, so he turned around and cupped his hands to apologize, and asked, "What is Tao?"

Zen Master Weiyan pointed up and down with his fingers and said, "Will you?"

The prefect shook his head and said no.

Zen master Weiyan said: "Clouds are in the blue sky and water is in the bottle!"

The eunuch listened, saluted happily, and stated a gatha: "The chain is shaped like a crane, and there are two scriptures under a thousand pine trees; I come to ask and have nothing to say, the clouds are in the blue sky, and the water is in the bottle."

■Sentiment——

Li Ao was a high-ranking official with a haughty personality. He regarded himself as a Confucian, and a Confucian was very particular about etiquette. And Zen master Yaoshan Weiyan is a Zen master, who does not pay attention to etiquette, but acts spontaneously. From the point of view of Zen practitioners, people who are officials often fall into the mundane world too deeply and have been flattered by the world for too long, so they have a strong sense of worldliness. The Zen master's indifference is just to help him wash away the vulgarity. The Zen master taught him with unspoken teachings, and finally made him enlighten.

Don't even see Buddha
Once, when Wei Shan was meditating, Yang Shan walked into his room, and he asked, "Son, hurry up! Don't go into the underworld."

Yang Shan replied, "I don't even want faith!"

Wei Shan asked again, "Did you not want it after you believed it, or did you not want it because you didn't believe it?"

Yang Shan replied, "Apart from myself, who else can I believe in?"

Wei Shan said again: "If this is the case, it is just a person who pays attention to meditation."

Wei Shan added: "If that's the case, then he's just a Hinayana person who pays attention to meditation."

Yang Shan retorted, "I don't even want to see the Buddha."

So Wei Shan asked again: "Among the forty volumes of the Nirvana Sutra, how many were said by the Buddha? How many were said by the demon?"

Yang replied, "It's all from the devil."

Hearing this answer, Wei Shan was very happy and said, "From now on, no one can do anything to you."

■Sentiment——

If we are obsessed with words, then the best words are also "said by the devil".Enlightenment does not need words at all, it all depends on self-comprehension.

what do you want
Deshan Xuanjian is from Jiannan, Sichuan, and his common surname is Zhou. When he became a monk at an early age, he read the Buddhist scriptures extensively and was proficient in the "Diamond Sutra", especially the "Qinglong Shuchao". He often lectured on the "Diamond Sutra", and people called him "Zhou Jingang" at that time.Later, when he heard that Zen studies were very popular in the south, he said very indignantly: "I don't know how many monks have spent many years studying the prestige and precepts of Buddhism, but they may not be able to become Buddhas. Those in the south Little devil, dare to say that if you point directly at people's hearts, you will become a Buddha. I will destroy their caves and kill all their descendants in order to repay the Buddha's kindness."

So he took "Qinglong Shuchao" and walked from Sichuan to Hunan. On the way, he met an old woman selling cakes. At this time, he was tired and hungry, so he put down his burden and went to buy some snacks from the old woman.Pointing to his burden, the old woman asked, "What books are these?"

Deshan said: "Qinglong Shucai."

The old woman asked again: "Which sutra is it explained?"

Deshan replied: "The Diamond Sutra."

The old woman said: "I have a question. If you can answer it, you will provide free snacks; otherwise, please go to other places to buy."

"Diamond Sutra" once said: "The mind in the past cannot be obtained, the mind in the present cannot be obtained, and the mind in the future cannot be obtained. I don't know which heart you want to focus on."

Deshan was so questioned that he had nothing to say, so he went straight to Longtan hungry. When I arrived at the Dharma hall, I shouted: "I have long been looking forward to the Longtan, but when I get here, the pond is nowhere to be seen, and the dragon does not appear."

Long Tan came out and said to him, "You have seen Long Tan."

Deshan was silent, but determined to live there.

■Sentiment——

Deshan's aura melted into smoke under the old woman's smiling face: Because Zen does not have words, if you plan to read the scriptures and reach the state of enlightenment, it is empty.

It's holy, not ordinary
One day, Yantou went to see Deshan and asked as soon as he entered the door:

"Sage, or Fan?"

Deshan drank, so he bowed to Deshan and retreated.Someone told Dongshan about this, and Dongshan said, "No one but Yantou can bear it!"

When Yantou heard Dongshan's comment, he scolded:

"The old monk Dongshan didn't know good from bad, so he underestimated me. He didn't know that at that time, I was carrying him (referring to Deshan) with one hand and holding him down with the other!"

■Sentiment——

Yantou's thoughts are as sharp as a blade. He never admired others, not even his ancestor Tokuyama.Yantou asked Deshan "is the sage or the mortal" meaning that there is no distinction between all mortals, and Deshan's drink also showed that he had the same opinion as Yantou. As for Yantou's worship to Deshan, on the one hand, he expressed his satisfaction with Deshan's reaction, and on the other hand, he wanted to test how Deshan would react. But unfortunately Deshan sat like an idol and received worship, which shows that he still considers himself a saint.

Thirty sticks

Once, Deshan announced to the students: "If you are right, you have to eat thirty sticks; if you are wrong, you have to eat thirty sticks."

This word reached Linji's ears, and Linji said to his friend Luo Pu: "Go and ask him why he has to eat thirty sticks if he is right. When he wants to beat you, grab his hand." Great, send it to him and see what he does."

Luo Pu followed his plan, and when he finished asking and Deshan was about to hit, he grabbed the stick and sent it forward. At this time, Deshan didn't show any expression, just walked back to the room quietly.

After Luo Pu returned, he told Linji what had happened, and Linji said, "I have suspected Deshan for a long time. Even so, do you know anything about him?"

Just as Luo Pu was about to answer, Linji raised his hand and hit him.

■Sentiment——

Zen Buddhism talks about "not establishing words", so of course you can't speak, so if you say right or wrong, you will be beaten.Linji taught him not to take Deshan's words, but to grab his stick.Luo Pu didn't have the experience of self-enlightenment, he could only follow the gourd's plan, and naturally he was going to be beaten.

heavy drink

Su Dongpo, a scholar of the Imperial Academy, liked Zen. After discussing the Tao with Zen Master Zhaojue, and talking about "love and ruthlessness, the same kind of wisdom", he consciously realized something, so he wrote three poems and verses, respectively expressing that he did not practice Zen and practiced Zen. Time and the three realms after meditation and enlightenment.

The state of mind before practicing Zen is: the horizontal view is a mountain and the side is a peak, and the distance and height are different; I don’t know the true face of Mount Lu, only because I am in this mountain.

When I came to practice Zen, my experience was: the misty rain in Lushan Mountain and the Zhejiang tide, I can't wait for it before it arrives; it turns out that there is nothing else, the misty rain in Lushan Mountain and Zhejiang Lake.

After studying Zen and enlightening the Tao, the state is: the sound of the stream is full of wide and long tongues, and the scenery of the mountains is nothing but a pure body; eighty-four thousand verses come at night, how can you act like a human being in the future?
After Su Dongpo had some Zen enlightenment, he had a higher opinion of Zen Buddhism. Therefore, when he heard that Zen Master Chenghao of Yuquan Temple in Jingnan had a sharp and sharp style of Zen, and his wit was profound and difficult to touch, he was extremely dissatisfied.Relying on his talent and learning, but also fond of debating difficult questions, he decided to seek an audience in a humble manner, in order to test Cheng Hao's Zen skills. When we met for the first time, we immediately asked a difficult question: "I heard that the Zen master has a high level of Zen enlightenment. May I ask what is Zen enlightenment?"

Zen Master Cheng Hao asked instead, "May I ask the honorable official's name?"

"The surname is Scale! It's the scale that weighs the elders in the world!" Su Dongpo responded with a sharp edge, conscious of his brilliance, and was very proud of himself.

Cheng Hao immediately yelled, and asked calmly, "How heavy is this drink?"

Su Dongpo was speechless, so he was convinced and bowed out.

■Sentiment——

Su Dongpo thought highly of himself and compared himself to a scale. He went so far as to measure the "weight" of the Zen master, that is, to measure how much the Zen master had.Unexpectedly, with just a shout from the Zen master, his "scale" "failed" due to being overwhelmed. It can be seen that the difference between Su Dongpo and the Zen master is far more than one hundred and eight thousand miles! This tells us that the realm of Zen cannot be measured!
