Chapter 23 Breaking the Precepts—In the Great World, a Free Body

Chapter 23 Breaking the Precepts—In the Great Thousand World, a Free Body (5)
Shi Leilei, the head of the stream, is a fan of Cao Fan.

The slippery moss is not the rain, and the whining of the pine is not the wind.

Who can surpass the tiredness of the world and sit together in the white clouds.

Han Shan was dressed in ragged clothes that were neither monk nor religious, and he would often shout into the air: "So happy, so happy!" The monks thought he was troublesome, so they beat him with their Zen sticks, but he clapped his hands and laughed.

One day, he and Shide asked Chan Master Fengqian: "If the ancient mirror is not worn, how can we illuminate the candle?"

What he meant was, how does the Buddha-nature function when one has not practiced it?Zen Master Fengqian replied: "There is no image in the ice pot, and the ape explores the water and the moon." Han Shan said: "This is because the candle is not illuminated. Master, please explain it again."

Feng Gan smiled: "Wan De is not coming, what do you want me to say?"

The ancient mirror is bright and clean, shining on the sky and the earth.Han Shan and Shide suddenly realized.

Han Shan saw a group of monks stringing up eggplants and eating them, so he hit a monk on the back with an eggplant string. The monk naturally turned his head back, Han Shan presented the eggplant, and also presented the great Zen machine: "What is this?"

The monk didn't know Ji Feng, thought Han Shan was playing a prank, and cursed: "You crazy!"

Han Shan said helplessly to the monk next to him, "Look at how much salt and vinegar this guy has wasted on me."

That's right, he showed the essence of Zen with eggplant, the monk was ignorant, didn't he fail Han Shan's hard work.

Zhaozhou, who is well-known all over the world, came to Tiantai Mountain from Zen Master Zhuo. When he saw Hanshan, he picked it up and said: "I have heard about Hanshan for a long time, and I picked up its name. When I came, I only saw two water oxen."

Han Shan and Shide listened, and they really pulled out their bullfighting stance, and they still made the sound of yelling at buffalo. The next day, Han Shan and Shi De asked Zhao Zhou what he was doing here?Zhaozhou said that he would pay homage to five hundred Venerables (Arhats). The two said, the Venerable Five Hundred Buffaloes.Zhaozhou asked:
"Originally, it was an Arhat monk, why did he make five hundred buffaloes?"

Han Shan shouted loudly: "Heaven, heaven!"

■Sentiment——

A Zen master has a famous saying: If I don’t go to hell, whoever goes to hell will go to hell. What the Zen master did was not brave, tragic, noble, or self-sacrificing as we understand it.They are the enlightened ones, the liberated ones, who don't feel the pain in hell, and feel like they are in the cool breeze in the scorching heat. Therefore, in order to get rid of people's superstition on the sacred, Zen practitioners often use buffalo as a metaphor for themselves. From the perspective of Zen, all living beings are Buddhas, so there is no essential difference between the sacred Arhat and the animal buffalo.

beggar zen

When Zen master Taoshui was abbot of Chanlin Temple, he attracted many monks. However, some of these monks regard Zen as knowledge that can be passed on, and they are unwilling to work hard to learn about it. They just fantasize about enlightenment from the master's words; Meditating quietly in the monastery is considered Zen practice and enlightenment.

Soon, Zen Master Taoshui resigned as the abbot of Chanlin Temple and dismissed all the monks. In order to prevent the monks from finding him, he lived with a group of beggars.Three years later, a disciple finally found the whereabouts of the master under a bridge, and immediately kowtowed like pounding garlic, asking Zen master Taoshui to pass on the true meaning of Zen to him.

Zen Master Taoshui was also not polite, saying that he was not qualified to receive his own guidance. The disciple asked, how can one be qualified?Taoshui said, Zen is in the life of a beggar, as long as you can persist by my side for three or five days, you will be able to benefit from Zen.The disciple thought to himself, let alone three or five days, even three to fifty days, I can do it.

The disciples also changed into tattered clothes and begged together with the master. That night, an old beggar passed away, and Taoshui and his disciples carried him to the field to bury him overnight.Back under the bridge, Zen Master Taoshui fell asleep after lying down, but his disciple couldn't fall asleep anyway, and he was always thinking about the dead beggar.

After dawn, Zen Master Taoshui said: "There is no need to beg for food today, the companion who passed away still has some food left." Zen Master Taoshui picked up the food left by the dead beggar and ate it with great relish.

And the disciple just took the dirty broken bowl and vomited with a "wow".Zen Master Taoshui asked him what was the matter? He put his hands together and said to Zen Master Taoshui: "Master, please forgive me, I really can't understand your beggar Zen."

Later, even the other beggars left.Zen master Taoshui built a small hut under the bridge and made a living by weaving straw sandals.

Once, a poor friend went to burn incense in a monastery, and saw there was a Buddha statue for free, so he asked Zen Master Taoshui for one.He said to Taoshui: "You are a monk, and you don't even have a Buddha statue. It's too outrageous. You should worship carefully, and I can bless you to go to the west."

Chan Master Taoshui thanked him, pasted the Buddha statue on the wall of the hut, and said, "Buddha Tathagata, don't be angry, I don't respect you if you are not an old monk. You are just passing by in a hurry, you might as well stay with me for a while. You Don't mind my hut being broken, and I won't bother you about going to the West."

■Sentiment——

Whether it is heaven or pure land, everything is created by the mind.In the eyes of Zen masters, the real Buddha is everywhere, and the true meaning of Zen is everywhere, because everything is in their hearts.

Zen Moon Qinghui
Master Zenyue Guanxiu, whose common surname is Jiang, Yu Deyin, was born in Lanxi, Wuzhou, Zhejiang. He was born at an untimely time, in a dilapidated scholar-bureaucrat family in the war-torn Tang Dynasty.

His parents were unable to support him, let alone train him. When he was only seven years old, they sent him to a monastery and became a monk.Xu Shi has good roots, and the clever Guanxiu memorized a [-]-word "Lotus Lotus Sutra" in a few days. The patriarchs of Zen Buddhism never had their own opinions, and the homework of the enlightenment monks always focused on Confucian classic poems. Therefore, Guanxiu, who was only fifteen or sixteen years old, was famous in the south of the Yangtze River for his poems.

In the early summer of one year, he wandered to the Buddhist monastery of Chan Master Da Sui.But the mountains are clear and the springs are gurgling; in the pond, several white lotuses are swaying in the wind; on the cliff there is a pagoda towering into the sky.So, he gladly wrote on the white wall of the meditation hall:
Red Zhantan Pagoda has six or seven levels, with three or four branches of white hanju flowers,

How many people can know this mind when a Zen guest only snaps his fingers when he meets each other?

Guanxiu took two steps back, admiring his masterpiece.Suddenly, a voice from behind asked: "How is this heart?"

It is Da Sui Zen master.Although Guanxiu's poems are full of the artistic conception of Zen, they are only imaginative reasoning and enlightenment in words. Therefore, when Da Sui slammed his head in the face, and when he really met him with the awe-inspiring wit of Zen, he was sweating profusely, but he was speechless. From this, he knew that Zen is not a word game, not a clever debate! He changed the impetuousness of the literati and poets, and really calmed down, and deeply studied the essence of Zen.

In the cold winter, he came to the Langjia Temple in Hengshan, Suzhou again, and paid homage to Zen Master Daokuang. When he came to the abbot, he clasped his hands together and saluted, and asked straightforwardly, "What is Langa month?"

According to Buddhist scriptures, Langa Mountain is the place where the Buddha preached the "Langa Sutra".This mountain system is made up of all kinds of treasures. The treasures are intertwined, and the light is so bright that it is like millions of suns shining on the golden mountain together. This mountain is the place where ancient sages attained enlightenment and became Buddhas.

At the beginning, when Bodhidharma came, the four volumes of the Langa Sutra were passed on to Huike, the second patriarch, for initiation. Therefore, Zen Buddhism was originally called the Lenga School.Guanxiu cleverly borrowed the name of Zen Master Daokuang's monastery, and used "How is the Lenga month" to inquire about the wonderful purpose of Zen.

"It's not the sun and the moon." Zen Master Daokuang replied.

Guanxiu was taken aback: I was asking Zen an excuse, how could he make mistakes and answer wrong questions? However, it was this kind of answer that cut off his original train of thought suddenly, making him in an ethereal state at that moment.Just when his previous thoughts had been cut off and the next thoughts were about to come to life, the dust whisk in Zen Master Daokuang's hand fell down and hit him hard on the head!
"Boom—" After a thunderbolt, Guanxiu's body and mind were shattered together with the entire void, and the heart that had been running wildly, suddenly found its hometown.

■Sentiment——

The enlightenment of Zen does not require words.Guanxiu has never been enlightened, because he has always been attached to language. Later, Zen Master Daokuang gave him a blow to the head and finally drove away his attachment.Guanxiu after enlightenment, Zen mind is like a bright full moon, scattering bright and clear light anytime and anywhere. He not only writes poems more elegantly and deeply, but also writes with spirit, and his calligraphy and painting are excellent. His cursive script is comparable to that of Zhang Xu and Huai Su, and is called "Jiang Style" (his common surname); his paintings are bold and exaggerated, vivid and vivid. Heavy treasure.Throughout Guanxiu's life, he has mastered everything in poetry, calligraphy, piano and painting, and has achieved outstanding achievements. He can be called a generation of art masters.

"I'm slow"

Guo Ziyi, a general of the Tang Dynasty, was a famous general with both wisdom and courage in Chinese history. During the Anshi Rebellion, he defeated Shi Siming, defeated the main rebel army in Anlushan, and saved the Li family. However, this powerful general is also a devout Buddhist, and he pays even more respect to Zen monks. The reason why his army was able to sweep the world like a rolling mat was because there was ample supply of food and grass. And a large part of the military expenses for buying grain and grass was raised by Zen Master Shenhui, a disciple of the Sixth Patriarch Huineng, from Buddhist disciples. Therefore, although after the war, General Guo was a Zhongshu Ling (equivalent to a prime minister) who was under one person and above ten thousand people, he often went to temples to worship Buddha and listen to Buddhism.

One day, when he visited the abbot of the temple again, he asked for advice respectfully: "Master, when I read Buddhist scriptures, I often see the word 'I am slow' in the scriptures. Excuse me, how do you explain this?"

The abbot Zen Master shouted loudly and said, "What nonsense are you talking about, you stupid fellow?"

Guo Ziyi was taken aback: What's wrong with Zen Master?Suddenly changed such an "arrogant and rude" face.

For a moment, everyone in the abbot was stunned. You must know that Guo Ziyi was the Prime Minister of the court, and even the emperor had to pay him three respects.A surge of anger rose in Guo Ziyi's heart, and his face was gloomy.Just as he was about to walk away, the Zen master regained his kind face and said with a smile: "Master Guo, this is 'I am slow'!"
