A Dragons Favor

Chapter 16:early goodbyes

That night I ate dinner in my room, it didn't feel like resting it felt like being a prisoner. No one was allowed to talk to me and if I talked to them they got nervous and rushed away. I hope wherever we end up we're welcomed by nice people, although Flora and I have decided to go our separate ways once leaving the kingdom.

At midnight I snuck out of my room with my bag and made my way to Floras chambers. My footsteps echoed loudly off the stone walls of the corridor, I knocked gently when I arrived. Flora peeked through, a sigh of relief escaping her lips.

"I was scared it was someone else."

"Nope just me," I shrugged "You ready?"

"Yes, let's hurry!"

We hurried through the castle to the treasury room, outside the room stood two royal guards

"Oh no!" I groaned

"Don't worry I've got this handled"

Leaving her bag behind the princess produced a small bundle of cookies from it and winked at me before strolling up to the guards.

"Why Jack, I'm surprised you don't recognize me!" She said her voice laced with honey.

"Why, princess fancy meeting you here!" A huge smile plastered to his face.

"I've brought you boys a little treat to thank you for your services." She smiled at them.

"Why this is mighty kind of you ma'am " The other guard spoke up. She pecked them both on the cheek and walked away giving a small wave before rounding the corner.

Not long after we hear the two men fall to the ground, snoring as loud as bears.

"Sleeping powder in the cookies," The princess giggled "My father uses it to sleep at night"

This girl was far more clever than I gave her credit for.

Stepping over the guards we made our way inside the treasury room and Flora found the secret lever that opened the hidden room we were searching for. She quickly ducked inside to grab the egg.

"Here!" She grunted as we carefully placed the egg in the empty sling around my neck. It weighed a ton!

"Let's hurry!" I whispered to her. We escaped to the stables as quickly as we could where our horses were waiting for us. We raced through the village and up to the grassy hill overlooking the palace.

"We made it!" We laughed in unison, I couldn't believe how well that went.

DING DONG DING DONG

Oh no! The kings warning bells, that could only mean they found the guards and realized what was missing. I squinted at the village in the dark and saw the royal guard racing their horses towards us.

"Go!!" I shouted, "We must separate now"

"Here!" She tossed a small pouch to me containing gold pieces "May we meet again."

"Thank you princess, goodbye. " A tear fell from my eye as we said our hasty goodbyes.
