A Dragons Favor

Morning came quickly, I groaned as I attempted to get up. My muscles ached from yesterday's hike, Micah had the same reaction this mountain was hard on the body. Felix refused to get up entirely until we waved some meat in front of his nose, he definitely wasn't making this part of the journey easy. Checking on our supplies we headed out once again, snacking on the smoked meat we brought with us it would provide the energy we needed to finish our climb. As we neared the top of the mountain we started seeing more and more skeletons as well as scorched boulders and egg fragments, evidence of past struggles. I heard a small whimper behind me, Felix was cowering near my feet looking around with large scared eyes.

"Hey, it's ok to be scared." I said crouching next to his massive head, he was growing rapidly as the hours passed.

He looked up to me with hopeful eyes, his confidence growing slightly.

RROOAAAARRRR

The ground trembled causing rockslide all around the mountain side, a huge emerald green dragon shot up from the hole atop of the mountain. Perching itself on top of the boulders in front of us it blocked out the sun. I squinted to meet the dragons gaze a sense of protection overcame me as o moved in front of felix protecting him from the newcomer. Out of the dragons nose billows of black smoke poured out, an angry look shone in its gray eyes. This dragon had to be the protector of the nests judging from the massive scars that covered its huge body, there was no sense of hospitality just mistrust.

'What do you want?!' Its voice boomed in my head as the mindlink started. Micah stepped forward his sword drawn, I placed my hand on his arm to calm him before stepping forward.

'Hmph. It's been a while since I've seen an offspring of the dragonharts. Bold words from a tiny creature.' The dragon laid down crossing its front legs.

Felix poked his head out from behind Micah and me.

'Ahhh there you are little one,' Admiration filled the dragons eyes.

'The elder has been waiting patiently for you, come now.'

I placed my hand on Felix's neck,

"It's ok, I'll be with you every step of the way."

As we moved forward the dragon rolled its eyes before bringing its head to my level.

'Obviously humans aren't permitted no matter what their lineage.'

"I can't leave him until he meets the elder, Felix has imprinted on me since his hatching."

'How truly unfortunate...there is no path down to the nests you can only get there by flight. '

"I guess the elder needs to come here then." I said flatly crossing my arms.

'Bahahahaha!! Ooh human I like you!' The dragon couldn't hold back its laughter,

'You've got spunk for such a small creature! I suppose I could take you and your mate down to see the elder. You'd be the first humans in the nests.'

"Oh he's not....I mean...we're not..." I started stammering my face turning bright red.

'Climb on my back child and hold on tight.'

Climbing on the dragons back Micah and I avoided eye contact trying to make the situation less awkward. We knew how we felt about each other but nothing was set in stone yet.

The dragon lurched upwards and dove straight down, I had to stifle a scream, my heart leaped in my throat. I had never flown before it was truly an experience, here we went down into the nests.
