American comics: Starting from the Dimensional Demon
#251 - It can only be you, Captain Steve Rogers!
Her body remained still, the woman on the sofa showing no reaction.
Deadpool sensed something was amiss and reached for the red wine on the nearby cabinet, but Constantine shook his head and snatched the half-empty glass away.
"Hey, Constantine, listen to me..." Deadpool protested, wanting a drink.
Constantine, being understanding, finished the wine in one gulp, his tone deep: "Wade, this matter... we should leave it to the Captain."
F***! Constantine!
Watching the wine being drained, Deadpool angrily raised his middle finger.
Tony looked at the two, speechless, and internally complained, "Are you kidding me? Read the room!"
"Peggy, I know you're awake, help me..."
Completely ignoring their "performance," Steve called out with affection. After a moment, Peggy slowly opened her eyes and sat up from the sofa.
"Steve, I can't fool you after all!"
Her red lips were beautiful, curving upward into a captivating smile, "I overheard part of your conversation. While I don't fully understand everything you're saying, if it's just a matter of finding someone, I think I can offer some personal assistance."
As the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., Peggy Carter still had some authority, she inquired.
"Tell me, who are you looking for?"
"Pepper Potts, the CEO of Stark Industries, and also my... lover!"
Pulling out a small projection device, Tony displayed Pepper's image in the air, speaking with utmost sincerity.
He watched Peggy Carter's face, noticing a subtle change in her expression the moment he spoke the name.
There's something!
"Ms. Carter, if you know where Pepper is, please tell me her location!"
"Tsk..."
Standing up from the sofa, Peggy gave everyone a strange look, a look that made Tony uneasy. Before he could ask further, Peggy spoke.
"You... you're trying to find the President?"
"Ah... the President?" Tony was taken aback. "Wait, Ms. Peggy, I don't understand what you mean..."
"The President I'm talking about is the President of the United States."
Using the remote control to turn on the living room TV, Peggy flipped through channels before stopping at a news channel.
She pointed to the woman giving a speech on the screen, confirming, "There~ Is that her?"
"......"
"Make America Great Again..."
Striking the same "OK" hand gesture as a certain former president, Pepper delivered a passionate speech to a sea of flashing cameras from the podium.
It was a Pepper Tony had never seen before, so... exuberant!
"Aww— —"
Letting out a cry, Deadpool rubbed his face incessantly, hardly daring to believe his eyes. Was this the same Pepper Potts he knew, the one who held babies?
Was the leap in social status a little too drastic?
Even Tony hadn't anticipated this turn of events. What the heck was going on? How did she become the President?
"666!"
Having met Pepper a few times, Peter also gaped in astonishment.
"Hold your jaws for a second, don't you guys find it strange?"
Holding a cigarette, Constantine was very calm. "Even if this world is fake, it needs a certain basic operating logic. Tony, did Pepper ever consider running for President?"
"No, she's already busy enough with company affairs, plus taking care of Anya and me... she wouldn't have the time."
After a brief analysis, Tony shook his head.
Constantine looked at him speechlessly, complaining, "Is this guy a baby? Does he need someone to take care of him?!"
"But didn't that fatso Kingpin become the mayor?" Deadpool asked, puzzled.
"About Kingpin, I heard he had plans to secretly run for mayor, but I always took it as a joke..."
Shrugging, Peter's explanation was simple. Kingpin was different from Pepper; at least he had the idea and took action. Pepper... well, she had nothing.
Clap clap clap.
Interrupting their thoughts, Peggy clapped her hands to bring everyone's attention back.
"Although I don't want to ask this, I still want to know what you intend to do after finding the President?"
"This will determine S.H.I.E.L.D.'s next stance."
Pulling out a lady's pistol, Peggy pointed it at Tony's head.
She trusted Steve wouldn't do anything detrimental to America, but as the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., she didn't trust his companions.
Especially since these guys were dressed so strangely, which only heightened her suspicions.
Although the country's gender identification had risen to 96, to be honest, these people's outfits... were quite an eyesore!
Due to her position, Steve understood her actions. He glanced at Tony, and then Tony told her the whole truth about this world, the giant baby in New York, and Wesker from Umbrella.
He nervously watched Peggy, expecting her to scream, go crazy, or even shoot him after hearing the truth, but none of that happened.
She simply frowned slightly and then put the gun down.
Her actions surprised Tony. "Ms. Carter, you... you believe me?"
Just like that?
"No, I believe Steve, and I also believe my intuition."
Peggy was very confident in her ability to tell if someone was lying.
More importantly.
She looked at her hands, touched her face. Her face still looked the same as it did 70 years ago, just like Steve's now.
"Steve, as the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., I can't trust anyone, sometimes that includes myself."
"So, whether it's the fact that I haven't changed at all in 70 years, or the so-called past experiences in my mind, they all make me instinctively suspicious."
"And your appearance has confirmed that!"
Suspecting everything, suspecting herself, that was the kind of awareness and pressure a director of S.H.I.E.L.D. had to possess.
Putting away the pistol, the extraordinary woman adjusted her red hat, a hint of anticipation in her eyes, and smiled.
"I will mobilize S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to help you.
But going to the White House to take the President will definitely encounter strong resistance. I hope you are mentally prepared for that!"
"And..." She gave Steve a light hug, whispering in his ear, "Steve, be careful."
"Thank you."
After quietly thanking her, Steve watched Peggy turn and leave. Constantine pondered for a moment, seemingly having figured something out, and said.
"This New York City is made up of the memories of 2.2 million people, so it not only contains all sorts of objects, but also the people in those memories."
Steve looked at him, sensing he was implying something. Constantine threw his cigarette on the ground and crushed it with his shoe, looking at him and saying in a deep voice.
"In other words, the only one I can think of who can manifest the Peggy Carter from 70 years ago is you, and only you, Captain Steve Rogers!"
