Bleeding Heart
44 A Stroke Of Luck
Sitting and looking out at the lake was really peaceful. And Dawn felt her heart grow lighter than it had been since she had lost her husband.
The mostly silent companionship that Raven provided made it even better, enhancing the feelings of peace. Whether that was just from his being there and knowing that if she wanted than she could find a willing listener in his person or because he just looked so peaceful laying there with his face upturned to catch the rays of the morning sun she had no idea.
But it was nice sitting with her friend. He looked so at peace as well, the slight look of discontentment that had been on his face the past day was gone replaced with a look of quiet strength that she was sure that nothing in the world could truly bother him.
She wondered who was waiting for this man to return home, what type of family was missing someone who must have been its cornerstone. And what manner of woman would be waiting on her beloved's return.
Raven could remember the woman's face; she was sure that the woman in his memory had been someone he had loved. Surely with someone as likeable as Raven the girl must have loved him as well. As long as the girl had not loved another than she was sure that Raven would have been able to catch her.
When his memory returned and once they were done with her quest for vengeance, she hoped that Raven would introduce his love to her and then she would invite the two to live in the castle with her. With a friendship like Raven's she did not want to let it go. And she was sure any woman who could catch her friend's eye was someone who would be a very sweet lass.
His loss of memory would make such a good story for him to tell his kids someday. She smiled at the thought.
And if they could find this Lass that the unicorn had mentioned perhaps she could heal his eyes. Dawn felt rather hopeful for once. Especially because from what the unicorn had said this Lass was capable of even bringing back the dead.
It was a sweet thought, thinking of the man she loved perhaps being brought back from the realm of the dead. Her hands went into her pocket and she brought his wedding band out.
It was luck and his habit of playing with it that she still had it. He had taken it off absentmindedly during their argument and had not even noticed it. She had noticed it later and had been carrying it ever since.
The wooden ring was plain and had been smoothed by much fingering. She caressed it softly. Arrion had loved it as plain as it was. Perhaps because it was so plain. Or simply because she had picked it out.
She was glad that she did have it because it had meant a lot to him. Carrying it was like carrying a piece of him.
And it was a symbol of the vows that they had made. As such she found it precious. Even before when she had not been aware of her own feelings for her husband, she had always valued those vows that they had made to each other. If just that it gave her a sense of belonging, a feeling of rightness in staying in his home with him.
Her own wedding band was a bit more elaborate being made of silver and gold twisted around each other. Arrion had even made a carving on it. It was still fairly simple but it showed the care he had put into it.
She closed her eyes and smiled to herself. If she could bring him back how wonderful it would be! She could not help but hope and look forward to flinging herself into his warm embrace. Imagining his strong arms wrapping her up in one of his bear hugs as he murmured words of tender love to her she looked forward to that so much. Even if it might not happen, she would rather hold on to that hope.
It was such a sweet hope and she could not help but cherish it. To have a chance for him to be brought back she would do anything to see it achieved. No price would be too great to pay in order for Arrion to be returned.
She would find this Lass even if she had to turn Nix'Ryl upside down first. She would wait until after getting her revenge to actively seek out this lady but she would find her. And when she did, she would beg her to try to bring her husband back to life. Though first she would have her check Raven's eyes first as it seemed simpler to heal a man's eyes surely than to bring back the dead.
