#43 - Filial piety
"Mom, Dad, come and help! Let's move the stuff out of the kitchen first. My sister and I bought a lot of tools in town. We're planning to give the kitchen a good makeover!" Wang Hao quickly called out to his parents.
Actually, everyone knows that when children are capable and want to bring some changes to the family, the biggest obstacle often comes from the parents.
They think that after so many years, they can still live their lives without spending too much money, and there's no need to waste it. This is their hardworking and thrifty nature.
To avoid the conflicts that might arise during this intermediate stage, Wang Hao had to take this 'act first, report later' approach.
At this moment, he saw his parents frowning, just standing there quietly looking at him, and his mother's classic catchphrase—"Always buying useless things!"—seemed to be written all over her face.
Wang Hao knew this would happen, but he could only smile helplessly, hoping his parents would forgive him.
However, it didn't seem to work very well. It looked like his parents were about to start lecturing him.
Fortunately, Wang Hao had a countermeasure: let his sister coax them! He winked at his sister, Wang Lan, signaling that it was her turn to step up.
Wang Lan understood and stepped forward, grabbing her parents' arms and gently shaking them, eloquently explaining the benefits of the renovation and using them to entice them.
Then, she brought up the possibility of her brother's future girlfriend, saying that if she saw such a dilapidated kitchen, it might negatively affect her brother's marriage prospects.
Finally, Wang Lan played her trump card: "Anyway, we've already bought everything, so there's no point in objecting now!" This successfully ended the persuasion phase.
Listening to Wang Lan's analysis, Wang Lin and Liu Zhi increasingly felt that the renovation was indeed necessary. When they heard the last sentence, "We've already bought it," although they were a little unhappy, they had no choice but to nod in agreement. After all, their children had already shown their good intentions, and they couldn't refuse!
Next, the family began to tidy up the old furniture and various messy items in the kitchen.
During this process, Wang Hao found that many things were no longer useful and suggested throwing them away. But his parents regarded these things as treasures and firmly disagreed, claiming they would find a suitable place to store them.
Faced with his stubborn parents, Wang Hao was ultimately helpless and had to give up.
Wang Hao had once watched a video where the definition of filial piety left a lasting impression on him. The video mentioned that filial piety consists of two words: "filial" and "obedient."
The first word, "filial," most people can achieve because the education and values they receive from childhood all include this aspect, and it has even become a social consensus.
For example, those who are unfilial often become the focus of news once exposed, which is enough to prove the prevalence of "filial piety."
However, achieving the second word, "obedient," is not so easy. When a person grows up, due to the different eras and experiences from their elders, their ways of thinking naturally differ.
People often can't help but treat their parents in ways they think are right, but they can't truly be "obedient," that is: although they don't understand, they still maintain respect!
Everyone has a longing for beauty deep in their hearts, and even parents are no exception. They may be resistant to unknown changes, but they will never reject the arrival of beautiful things.
"Yeah, Mom, look, you can cook like this in the future..." Wang Hao enthusiastically explained his planning ideas to his parents, detailing the various conveniences and practical uses after the renovation.
Mother Liu Zhi listened with great interest, nodding frequently. She was pleasantly surprised to find that her son really had ideas. After his explanation, the problems that had once made her feel inconvenienced were solved. At this moment, she was extremely satisfied with this brand-new kitchen.
"Brother, brother, it's almost noon! We've been busy all morning, and the breakfast Mom made has long been digested!" Wang Lan pointed to the time displayed on her phone screen while humming and grumbling.
"Oh ho, what's going on? Didn't you always wait for Mom to cook for you? Now that you think your brother's cooking is delicious, you're starting to dislike Mom!" Liu Zhi looked at Wang Lan with a smile, her tone full of teasing.
"That's not true! Mom's cooking is always the best, okay! I'm just worried that you're too tired, Mom~" Wang Lan hurriedly approached Liu Zhi, putting on a delicate and cute look, and speaking in a coquettish voice. This performance made the other three couldn't help but laugh.
"Then let's still make the noodles from last night. I think they tasted pretty good!" At this time, Wang Lin, who had walked over, interjected.
The fragrant bowl of noodles from last night had left a deep impression on him. People who came from their era have a special love for noodles. It's a warm sense of fullness that no other food can replace, especially since Wang Hao made them quite delicious.
However, this proposal was immediately strongly opposed by Wang Lan. You should know that in order to have a good meal for lunch today, she had promised her brother a lot of conditions. Not only did she just cooperate with her brother to cover up, but she even specially selected a lot of ingredients to bring back when she went shopping in town before.
These past two days have been basically non-stop busy. It feels like a loss not to eat a good meal to compensate. She can't just be sent away with a simple bowl of noodles!
"Okay, okay, then we won't eat noodles!" Wang Lin looked at his stubborn daughter, shook his head helplessly, and said dotingly, "After all, daughters are the most important!" Hearing her father's words, Wang Lan immediately showed a victorious smile on her face. She excitedly took out a large bag of ingredients from the kitchen and placed it on the dining table.
After reaching an agreement, Wang Hao said nothing and quickly put on an apron, ready to show off his skills.
