006—I’m Not Your Younger Brother (3)
Xuan Cheng grabbed his head, thinking. It was hard for him to refuse in this kind of situation; furthermore, he secretly desired to see that scheming and vicious Empress Dowager Gou. In his previous life, his parents frequently fought with each other. From time to time his mother would even leave the home. However, even though this happened frequently, they never bothered to divorce. Xuan Cheng had heard people say before that the titles of husband and wife were not only something that you called the other party, but also a responsibility. For example, it was only because his parents stayed together that he was able to live this kind of life. After several years, Xuan Cheng found that he missed them incredibly.
A sudden pain swept through his head. There were still so many things that he had to do; why did the heavens act like this? He suddenly thought Professor Liang’s words made sense: no matter how strong a person was, sometimes there were factors out of their control. He wanted to sleep. Maybe sleeping would take him back home. After all, that was how he had ended up in this situation in the first place.
Xuan Cheng rubbed his sore eyes, weakly saying, “I need to rest. Why don’t you first go.”
Fu Jian possed, before finally letting go of Xuan Cheng’s hand unwillingly. “Alright. I’ll go and meet Jinglue first, while you stay here and rest.” He stood up, walking to the exit, before stilling again and turning back. “Younger brother, when you return home make sure to see the Empress again. There’s no reason to make her life harder. After all, she’s first and foremost our mother. The suffering that she’s gone through is something that none of us can comprehend.”
He paused again, still reluctant to leave. Finally, he left with one last look. For some reason Xuan Cheng felt like the expression was nostalgic, although he was unable to remember from where. Faintly, in a buried memory, a thousand years seemed to pass by, and a man’s figure stood, unyielding, in the distance, never moving while he waited.
In the blink of an eye, his heartbeat suddenly quickened.
To remain here and prevent his brother from recreating that fatal mistake was now his destiny. He would finish what Professor Liang had argued was not possible. He didn’t believe that Former Qin would be destroyed, he didn’t believe that Fu Rong would die, and most of all, he didn’t believe that the man who had wanted to destroy Former Qin would appear in the Former Qin territory. Xuan Cheng thought to himself, as long as he could properly convince Fu Jian to follow the right path, then none of the following calamities would occur.
With those kinds of thoughts in mind, he slowly, perplexedly drifted to sleep.
In his dreams he saw his parents. It felt like this was their first meeting, as if they were nothing more than strangers. There was some degree of detachment as the woman turned to him, tears all over her face, as she pitifully cried, “Xuan Cheng, Xuan Cheng, why don’t you come to see your mother?”
He didn’t have a chance to reply before another face appeared again. “Xuan Cheng, Xuan Cheng,” the man said. His voice was originally firm, but now it had become soft and gentle. He was incapable of finishing his sentence, his eyes brimming with tears.
Than a series of endless faces appeared in front of him, flashing before his eyes. There was Liang Ren, Pig Head, Little Yellow, and Radish and the rest of them, until in the end, there was a pair of gentle eyes curved upwards into a smile. A warm voice gently said, “Xuan Cheng, are you still waiting for me? I told you, I will wait for you here.”
“I’ve waited a thousand years. I’m so tired. But I’ve said before, that I will wait for your return.”
Xuan Cheng was scared to the point of not daring to say any words. He was afraid of agreeing; he feared that he would end up making a promise he would be unable to keep.
Therefore, he could only stare blankly as if he had seen a ghost. He looked at the person in front of him, finally absentmindedly asking, “Who are you?”
Afterwards… there was nothing afterwards.
Xuan Cheng woke up, his entire body covered with cold sweat.
The next morning, just as the dawn broke, Xuan Cheng opened his eyes. Standing in front of him was a tired and exhausted face.
“Fu Jian?” he asked?
Fu Jian laughed, stooping as he helped Xuan Cheng sit up. “Little brother, how are you? Are you still indisposed?”
Xuan Cheng couldn’t help but feel upset as he stared at Fu Jian’s tired appearance. It looked as if he hadn’t slept the entire night. Didn’t he say yesterday that he was only going to find Wang Meng?
“Why are you still here?”
Fu Jian laughed. “Your body still hasn’t recovered. I’m still worried.”
“Here, get up.”
Xuan Cheng pushed off the blanket, wanting to get off of the mattress. Immediately, Fu Jian extended an arm to support him.
Xuan Cheng stared for a second, before extending his arms in a lazy stretch. “I’m fine, I’m fine. I already recovered. You can leave.”
“What?” Fu Jian was unable to comprehend the meaning of his words, blankly asking him.
