Chapter 26 - A God Descended from the Heavens
A stampede of wild bison was running through Jack's heart. 'How could it be a child?' he thought. Everyone else was experiencing the same shock,so much so that they even forgot to sit down. Meanwhile a few more clan members came in with pitchers of wine and set them next to the food before leaving quietly. "Please, sit! Eat!" Chief Saito couldn't help but chuckle to remind them. Jack and Leila snapped out of their daze and gestured to their soldiers to be seated. These soldiers finally noticed the food in front of them and a feeling of hunger washed over them. They had been marching for many days with only biscuits and jerky to keep them going. An array of fresh dishes was highly welcome. The hall became noisy as they dove into the food and filled their cups with wine. However the Queen and General could not bring themselves to eat and were even rather pale. They were communicating with their eyes and had already come to a conclusion. They must befriend this clan! "General you have to try this food!" on of the soldiers offered to Jack between mouthfuls. It was only then that he was brought back down to earth and noticed the meals laid out on the table. He was just about to admonish that soldier when he noticed something peculiar about the food he was busy stuffing himself with. Yes something was off about the food. 'Is it poison?' he wondered. 'No, with my senses, I would have caught the threat.' he considered. He picked up a piece of meat and sniffed it, only to be assaulted by a marvellous aroma. More importantly, his appetite was actually stirred and a loud rumble came from his stomach. His soldiers burst out into laughter because of it but Queen Leiss turned white as a sheet. Experts at their level did not feel hunger easily. They could simply continue surviving on Qi alone. The only thing that could move their hunger was divine fruits that contained Qi. Then that could only mean...Thinking up to here a bright glow flashed through Jack's eyes and he checked the foods on the table again. With his divine eyesight he could clearly see that all the meals radiated a mild aura of Qi. The Qi had not dissipated even after the food had been cooked! This was much more difficult to achieve than simply having an alchemist refine a spirit medicine. Spirit medicines were refined from spirit herbs and contained concentrated Qi in the form of a pill. It took a laborious process to ensure that the Qi in the herbs was not lost during refinement. Most alchemists would prepare a spirit broth, which had the essence of the herbs dissolved in a potion, but real grandmasters would completely condense the Qi in a pill or powder form. But there was a mythical, theoretical level above that of grandmaster alchemist, and that was of a Qi Chef. A true master with impeccable control of the ingredients would not simply condense it, no, he would combine them into a meal that maintained the Qi in the ingredients. Control of the flame, keeping the soup as a potion, roasting beast flesh just enough to not lose efficacy, preparing a juice from spirit fruits without evaporating all the Qi, this was much harder than simply condensing a powder or pill. Queen Leiss had noticed his actions and also closely observed the food on the table. The result was too much of a shock and she nearly fell out her chair, completely destroying her elegant appearance. Noticing the weird looks from her subordinates she could only settle her heart and quietly serve herself a serving of food. Of course food containing Qi would be delicious to her soldiers. After all it could even raise the cultivation of lower cultivators and was the same as taking a spirit pill. Only the difference was that spirit pills were harsh on the body. They would not be completely pure and the chemicals in the pills would slowly create blockages in the qi passages over time. This was why someone who only relied on spirit pills would not have the same power as someone who grew their cultivation slowly and naturally. Their energy circulation would be flawed, and they would be much weaker in a fight. But food with Qi was a completely different story. The energy and Qi would be naturally absorbed and the impurities would be excreted out. Just by having a meal, a good workout and a good nap, one would experience a raise in cultivation without any side effects. It was literally growing stronger in one's sleep. This was why Qi Chefs were so revered.
'A clan with a Shaman, a Qi Chef, a Tamer, if one was to assume that each of the twelve old monsters had a different talent...too terrifying, just too terrifying!' Queen Leiss shook her head in distress to shake away the thought and continued with her food. She was seated closest to the twelve old monsters with Jack on the other side of the table. The eight year old at the high table was smiling at them and seemed rather amused at their exaggerated reactions. "A young lady with a Pure Yin Body like yourself must surely have a lot of suitors l.u.s.ting after your beauty. Though it seems your [Nine Ice Lotus] technique is flawed." the young boy casually commented. Queen Leiss' eyes nearly jumped out of their sockets and she choked on her food. After along bout of coughing the abruptly stood up clearly agitated and pointed at the head table. "You! How do you know? How can you know? Who are you?" The technique that Queen Leiss cultivated was a hidden secret of the Leiss Empire. The Leiss Empire inherited the throne due to their unique bloodline. Every several generations a daughter of the Leiss household would be born with this bloodline, that would allow them to cultivate the royal technique. It was always the daughters and never the sons, and as such the times when the throne was inherited by a king was also when the Empire was at it's weakest. Only the crown prince or princess would be privy to this secret that secured the throne on the day of succession no less. Although princes and kings would also cultivate an ice technique, it was an inferior version not backed by their bloodline, merely to give the public impression that both genders were mighty. 'But for this child to directly point out the technique, see through her bloodline, and even know it has flaws, just what sort of monster is he?' Philip simply smiled and it was chief Saito instead who answered. "Let me introduce you, this is my son Philip, and he is a God descended from the Heavens."
