#413 - The life of ants
Chapter 412: The Life of Ants
A meteor fell, drawing a long tail across the sky. At this moment, it didn't feel like a meteor streaking across the sky, but rather a meteorite crashing head-on. It emitted a thunderous roar in the air.
The two groups below finally noticed. The faces of everyone changed.
But the meteor's speed was too fast, and even if they saw it, it would be in vain. They could only watch as this terrifying meteor fell, eventually landing in the desert about two kilometers away from them. With a loud boom, the entire earth trembled violently, and a sand column hundreds of meters high shot into the sky, instantly forming a huge dust pillar that seemed almost solid. A large amount of sand particles scattered in all directions, even splashing into a murky cloud of dust.
Everyone stopped fighting, staring dumbfounded at the area where the meteor had fallen. When the dust settled, what appeared before them was a huge pit with a diameter of several hundred meters. The surface of the desert had been changed, with sand dunes squeezed out by the shock waves.
"What... is that..."
Someone asked this question in a trembling voice, but no one answered him... Two kilometers was too far for ordinary people; they could see the changes on the surface, but they couldn't see what was in the pit. So, after a brief moment of stunned silence, the two sides clashed again. Shouts of battle echoed through the sky.
On the other side, in the huge pit.
A metal sphere was emitting wisps of green smoke. Soon, an arc-shaped opening cracked on the surface, and an electronic female voice transmitted out.
"Arrived at destination, coordinates at X35 Gilt Desert, X3756, Y9130. External environment level one, with large sandstorms and significant temperature differences. Nuclear dust radiation detected, please prepare for protection."
A hand stretched out from the sphere's doorway, grabbed the edge, and with a slight effort, Blood瞳 stepped out.
Standing at the edge of the pit, he raised his head and took a deep breath of the air filled with radioactive dust, a hint of excitement on his face.
He's back...
He's back again.
Although this land was still dirty, and although the sky was still dim, this was, after all, the place where he had lived since he was a child. Here, there were familiar death winds, familiar deadly radiation, and mutated beasts that constantly threatened him. Perhaps these memories were not pleasant, but for Blood瞳, this was his 'hometown'.
A slight hissing sound came from afar, but Blood瞳 didn't look. He knew what was happening there; scenes like sand pirates looting played out countless times every day in X35. In the past, he might have been a little interested, but now it felt meaningless.
The lives of ordinary people were like another world to him. What did it matter if those travelers died? They were just a bunch of ants.
Thinking this, Blood瞳 was about to turn around and leave when he suddenly paused, feeling something was wrong.
Since when had he become so cold-blooded? When did he become so indifferent to life?
Were those lives really just ants?
Even if they were ants, weren't they worth cherishing?
A tremor ran through his heart, and Blood瞳 vaguely felt that he was being influenced by an invisible rule. Constant evolution gave him more power, but also transformed his state of mind. In just a few years, he had become someone he didn't even recognize.
No, that's not right.
It shouldn't be like this.
Blood瞳 retracted his foot. After carefully thinking for a moment, he turned and walked towards the chaotic scene in the distance.
His speed didn't seem fast, but in reality, he arrived in just a moment. What appeared before him was a tragic scene. The caravan had been surrounded by sand pirates, each person bearing more or less injuries, and several dead companions lay on the ground, apparently shot by crossbows.
Resources were scarce in X35, so sand pirates wouldn't use firearms unless it was a special situation. Otherwise, it was questionable whether the stolen supplies would even cover the cost of bullets.
Even so, the caravan couldn't hold out. There were too many sand pirates, and they were too strong. Compared to the professional killers that the sand pirates were, their strength and fighting will were not on the same level. In just a few minutes, more than ten people from the caravan had fallen. This was already a third of the caravan's manpower.
But Blood瞳's appearance clearly attracted the attention of both sides. In the midst of the battle, a lizardman-like man was slightly stunned, then shouted at him.
"Run! You're no match for them!"
This one sentence made Blood瞳 feel a sense of goodwill towards the lizardman. Underneath the lizardman’s ugly exterior, there was clearly a kind heart.
But now he had attracted the attention of the sand pirates. Two sand pirates were already charging towards him on motorcycles. They wore ferocious grins on their faces, and piercing howls came from their mouths.
"Ha... what do I see, a new fat sheep. Look at the clothes he's wearing, that's top-quality stuff you can't buy on the market!"
"Where did he come from? Does he think this is a bonfire party? Hahahaha, let's give him an unforgettable surprise!"
Amidst the shouts, the two sand pirates almost simultaneously raised the crossbows in their hands, shooting a volley of arrows at Blood瞳.
"Be careful!!" A woman's exclamation came from the caravan's defensive circle in the distance.
Blood瞳 glanced over there, the corner of his mouth slightly raised.
He looked very ordinary now, not only did he not have any imposing manner, but his figure was also slightly thin, just like an ordinary person. But just as the two rows of crossbow bolts were about to hit him, he raised his right hand, as if waving away a fly.
A black shadow flashed, and all the crossbow bolts fired at him disappeared. When they looked at him again, he had an extra crossbow bolt in his hand.
"Ah!" A burst of exclamations rang out from the caravan. No one had expected Blood瞳 to be so powerful. He could actually catch the crossbow bolts fired by the sand pirates with his bare hands, which was simply beyond the limits of ordinary people's imagination.
The lizardman was also stunned, his eyes filled with strange brilliance.
The sand pirates on the opposite side were startled. Especially the two sand pirates who were rushing towards Blood瞳, almost fell off their motorcycles. But at this time, it was too late for them to run. The motorcycles were very fast, and they were already less than ten meters away from Blood瞳. With a ruthless heart, the two sand pirates roared at the same time, pulling out long sabers from behind. They slashed at Blood瞳 head-on.
"Die, monster!!"
Because of fear, the faces of the two sand pirates were distorted, looking extremely ugly. But Blood瞳 didn't even look at them. He simply jumped up in place with a big spin.
In the air, Blood瞳's legs flashed out twice like lightning, and there was a muffled bang in the air. The two sand pirates flew out like cannonballs.
This flight was nearly a hundred meters. By the time they landed, their entire bodies had been twisted strangely, as if their spines had been broken alive.
The two motorcycles then flew past Blood瞳 on the left and right, and then crashed to the ground with a bang, kicking up a large cloud of dust.
"Good!!"
A burst of cheers rang out from the caravan's defensive circle. At this nearly desperate moment, Blood瞳's appearance was undoubtedly a shot in the arm, giving them hope for survival. Although they didn't know how strong Blood瞳 was yet, seeing him kick the two sand pirates away so easily, everyone knew that he was no ordinary person. No wonder he dared to come to this treacherous Gilt Desert alone.
"Well done, buddy!" The lizardman also cheered loudly, and then called out hopefully. "Can you help us? I can give you a reward."
"My reward isn't low," Blood瞳 replied calmly.
"Nothing is more valuable than life," the lizardman called out. "Come on, buddy. That's not a problem!"
Hearing the man's simple but very reasonable words, Blood瞳 smiled slightly.
Yes, nothing is more valuable than life. This was a truth he had understood since he was very, very young. At that time, he did everything to survive, struggling in blood and slaughter. Wasn't this the meaning of life? Even if it was just living to live, it was valuable. Because life is the greatest gift the universe gives to all beings.
However, only one's own life is the most valuable.
Thinking silently in his heart, Blood瞳 stepped towards the sand pirates.
Because of his previous actions, the sand pirates obviously regarded him as a strong enemy. Immediately, twenty of them rushed towards him. These sand pirates were obviously more powerful elites, holding various firearms instead of crossbows. They howled madly and began to surround Blood瞳 from all angles.
Unfortunately, they never dreamed of what kind of monster they had encountered.
If he didn't have to hide his strength, Blood瞳 could even scare all these guys to death just by releasing his aura. And even if he wanted to experience the life of mortals, Blood瞳's body was monster-level. Reaching the Comet level, even one of his fingers had tens of tons of power. He had to be careful not to smash these people to pieces all at once.
So next, the people of the caravan saw a hellish slaughter feast.
Blood瞳 was seen strolling leisurely in the encirclement of the sand pirates, and although his speed didn't seem very fast, every move he made happened to dodge the sand pirates' shots. And every time he waved his hand, a sand pirate was inevitably knocked off his motorcycle, his body twisted like dough. His movements didn't seem fast, but no matter how slow he was, no sand pirate could dodge his attacks. Amidst the sand pirates' frantic howls, he seemed to be strolling, his appearance unspeakably leisurely.
Blood splattered in the air, and the howls became fewer and fewer, and dimmer and dimmer.
By the end, only Blood瞳 was left in the field, and more than twenty sand pirates lay scattered around him, all turned into twisted corpses. That terrifying scene completely shocked everyone else.
"Wh-What's going on..."
"He... he's a monster!!"
It was unknown which sand pirate shouted, but the remaining sand pirates scattered and fled in a panic. Their panicked and frightened appearance was as if they hated their parents for not giving them two more legs.
On the opposite side, all the travelers were dumbfounded...
"Hey... you... you're not really a monster, are you?" The lizardman was still holding a gaping mouth, asking as if in a dream.
