Chapter 59: Learning To Use His Wings (5)
“YOU COULD HAVE AT LEAST WARNED ME FIRST!” Blake shouted at the top of his lungs.
He was currently free falling from about 100 meters up in the sky, with nothing but his own body. No parachute, no gliding suit, nothing.
It wasn’t actually that big of a deal for the current him as Blake had already thought of a couple of ways to deal with his current situation such as wearing the dark earth armor and using his other spells to break his fall.
However, the act of suddenly throwing him into the air without a single warning still scared him a little as he acted on instinct first and thought that he would crash head-first into the ground without being able to do anything.
But of course, that was only an instinctive reflex that he still had from being a bonafide land creature that didn’t have wings for 14 whole years of his life. After only a second, Blake quickly recomposed himself as he remembered that he now got wings on his back.
And although Blake had thought of surviving the fall with his spells, he refrained himself from doing that as his current goal wasn’t to only survive his current predicament.
What he was currently trying to do was to learn how to use his wings.
.....
So instead of panicking or thinking of a way to simply survive the fall, Blake closed his eyes and focused on Vera’s very last instruction before releasing him to skydive on his own.
‘And now, make sure to keep your wings relatively in this position, and run your nether through your wings.’
‘Isn’t it too short of an explanation...’ Blake complained in his mind before trying to do exactly what Vera told him to do.
Feeling the nether in his heart, Blake quickly guided them to surge towards his back before telling them to fill his wings with nether from the base of the wing that was connected to his back to their tips, which were wider than his body and were fully exposed to the air around him.
It already took quite an effort for him to keep his wings locked in their current position as the wide surface of the wings caught the wind and constantly pushed them out of place.
And for Blake to make sure that his wings didn’t go out of position while also controlling the nether inside his body, it was quite a taxing task that was only relatively not too hard for Blake to do because of his considerably high spirit stat.
With such a high number in his spirit stat, Blake’s control over the nether in his own body was stellar as he commanded it almost as easily as moving his own limbs that he already used to moving his whole life.
The nether then soon filled his wings to the brim and Blake prepared himself for whatever was about to happen since Vera didn’t tell him anything about what he should do next after he had done the last instruction she gave him.
Fortunately for Blake though, he didn’t need to think or figure out anything as the result of the nether filling up his wings soon appeared, and just exactly like what Vera had said, he only needed to keep his wings in that position and keep cycling the nether.
What happened after his wings were cycled with nether was that Blake suddenly felt his wings were catching more air than before and his falling speed started to fall down tremendously.
But not only that, but Blake also felt as if his wings were constantly generating an upward, lifting force that slowed down his fall even more.
However, it seems that the force wasn’t strong enough to actually stop him from falling downward as Blake’s body was still slowly moving down to the ground.
But instead of only falling straight down, Blake’s body glided forward due to how he positioned his wings wide open and bent them in a way that the wind around him made his body move forward, just like what the wings on a paper airplane do.
And now that Blake felt all the air pressure around him significantly lessened and he stopped himself from free falling onto the ground, Blake could finally take a deep breath and actually focus on his surroundings.
The scenery from his current position certainly wasn’t as good as the one that he had from 100 meters above, but he was still considerably high up in the air, more than enough to turn a person to a pulp if they fall from that distance, and he could still see the sea of red-ish green trees all around him from above.
Blake knew that technically, he still wasn’t flying on his own as he only moved forward while really slowly falling down.
But it was like having a little taste of what he really wanted to do, which was flying on his own, and according to Vera, it was only a matter of time until his wings were fully developed and he should be able to fly.
Blake would guess that if his wings were fully developed and he ran the nether through it, then he would feel more of that upward lifting force that he felt earlier.
‘And it’s also become considerably easier to fight against the air current, maybe it would become much easier after these wings had grown into full size.’
Thus enabling him to really flap his wings and generate the force that was needed to take his body up to the sky.
“Congratulations. You actually did it on your first try.” A voice suddenly came from beside him, stopping his thoughts.
Blake then turned his head to see Vera was also gliding beside him, with the same wing position as him.
“You didn’t think that I would succeed on my first try...?” Blake stared at the demoness with his head slightly tilted to the side.
“It’s more like I don’t know what to expect from your ability. It shouldn’t be possible to do it on the first try, but considering all the things that you’ve done so far, I thought that I shouldn’t use that logic for you.” Vera simply shrugged her shoulders while staring back at Blake.
“What if I fail and I fall down...!?” Blake wanted to whisper those words, but considering they were currently gliding in the air, Blake wanted to make sure that Vera heard his concerns and shout those words out loud.
“Well, you’re alive now, aren’t you? That’s all that matters! And it’s not like you will let yourself die.” She instantly replied.
“Bu....”
“Haaah...”
Blake turned speechless as she wasn’t exactly wrong and he didn’t have anything to say against her logic and just decided to go with it.
“Do you want to go back up?” Vera suddenly asked.
“Of course!” Blake replied as he extended his hand outward towards her.
Grabbing Blake’s hand with hers, Vera then flapped her wings as the two started gaining height once again and they were now back at their initial height before Vera decided to drop Blake from the sky.
But different from the first time that Vera was holding Blake on his waist, the two now flew right beside each other with Vera holding Blake’s hand, making sure that he didn’t fall back down and stayed at the same height as her.
And now that Blake was back at the height where he could see everything clearly, and knowing that he wouldn’t suddenly fall down from the sky, Blake could now enjoy the magical scenery around him to the fullest.
“It’s beautiful...” He couldn’t help but unconsciously mutter those words out loud.
“What did you say? I couldn’t hear you with all this wind. Speak louder!” Vera said as she turned her head towards Blake.
“Nothing I just-” Blake was about to answer her, but he suddenly stopped speaking as the moment he laid his eyes on her, Blake saw another scenery that he needed to admire.
Just like in their first meeting with each other, Vera’s red hair was currently shining due to the direct contact with the red sun’s light and it gave her a majestic angelic feeling despite the horns on her head.
The wind that wildly blew her hair backward along with the light expression on her face also gave the impression as if she was an innocent, free-spirited girl that simply wanted to enjoy her life peacefully doing mundane yet fulfilling things in life.
And the fact that he could also directly feel the warmth of her hand in his despite the cold blowing wind, made Blake’s heart beat as fast as the first time he saw the beautiful demoness in the forest.
“It’s very beautiful indeed...” He unconsciously muttered once again.
“What is it? I told you I can’t hear you if your voice is too small!”
“No! Nothing! I just want to know whether we can stay up here for a little while longer!” Blake replied, finally with a shout that Vera could hear clearly.
“Of course if that’s what you want!” Vera replied with a shout on her own.
