Devil's Apocalypse
Chapter 59 - Language (is hard)
'I have absolutely no idea what's happening!' Kasdeya cried in her mind, glancing around the room to ȧssess her location. 'Everything just kept moving forwards! I could hardly react to the ever evolving situation!'
Spinning in a quick circle, she noted the nice enough looking accommodation, fit with all the furniture one might expect in a simple hotel room.
'One minute I was being threatened, so I was preparing to fight back, then the next they've hitched me up for the night with accommodation and meals! And what do they mean 'MONKEY LORD'!? ARE THEY BLIND OR SOMETHING!?!'
It was at this moment that her gaze landed on the large mirror by the cabinet, showing her current appearance of being completely obscured by the yeti pelt, apart from her horns.
'Ok, so maybe I look a bit like a damnable monkey right now, but wouldn't inspecting me reveal my race? Maybe they can't for some reason… hmm, I don't know.'
Turning back to the door, Kasdeya focused her senses, trying to detect if there was anyone outside, but after failing to notice anything which might suggest the presence of people, she proceeded to investigate the room in detail.
Unfortunately, there was nothing of note within the room which would hint to her current location, state of the outside world, passage of time or possible escape routes, so any immediate plans were dashed.
'I guess the only thing I can do would be to see how this plays out. I don't particularly like being at the mercy of others but they seemed to fear me for some reason, so that's advantageous, and due to the aforementioned fear, they appear to be treading carefully around me, possibly in fear of invoking my ire. This could mean that I'll be right to relax for a period of time since they aren't doing anything, but it could also mean that they're planning on calling someone strong enough to take me down.'
Kasdeya sat down on the bed, her tail curling into her ŀȧp underneath the 'clothes' as she pondered the current situation.
'Though on a kinda related but less necessary note, they were clearly humans, and I got here through intercepting a traveling demon, so is this some sort of cult? Additionally, they appear to be doing quite well for themselves which is surprising given that the last people I saw were such low level. But I guess I have no idea how much time has passed, or whether or not I'm even on earth…'
Kasdeya continued to sit still, simply considering the many possible scenarios.
'Well, for now I'll take a passive approach and wait for a while, surely one of them is going to attempt to speak with me and when that happens, I'll be able to gather some information. I'll have to be careful though as to not let too much slip on my side, the last time something discovered my race I was proposed to then thrown into a very random hellhole, so it's probably a blessing that they somehow didn't discover my race.'
Deciding on a course of action, Kasdeya hopped off the bed and started practicing with runes once again.
After what Kasdeya predicted to be a few hours, though she knew her sense of time had likely been skewed by her lack of reference, her eyes moved to the door as footfalls could be heard echoing from the hallway outside the room. She also noted the appetizing aroma which accompanied them.
'This is probably the food which the seemingly important person was on about.' Kasdeya figured while dispelling the runes which were still hovering in the air and proceeding to walk towards the door. 'I could just let him place the food down and leave, but that's a waste of potential info, so I think I'll employ a much better idea.'
Kasdeya stopped just before the door and waited until the approaching individual was almost within arms reach of the wooden surface, before unlatching it and letting it slowly swing open with an audible creak, revealing both individuals to each other.
Laughing internally at the exaggerated reaction of the man, who turned pale and stopped moving, Kasdeya figured that she'd had enough fun and graciously stepped aside while invitingly gesturing into her room.
'All I did was invite you in, so why are you turning even paler than before?'
Starting to tap her foot against the floor, she directed a piercing glare at the man, causing him to visibly shiver as he took a tentative step forwards, very quickly crossing the threshold of the door as he went to set the food down on the small table.
Kasdeya walked off to the side, putting a short amount of distance between the two which she figured would be the optimum separation for stable communication.
"What's your name?" Kasdeya enquired, a basic question to initiate conversation and engage in a mutually beneficial exchange, however the reply was less than optimal.
"Well that's rude, not even going to respond?" Kasdeya growled, bending her body so as to be slightly lower to the ground.
Upon seeing the obvious change in attitude of Kasdeya, the man turned and tried to sprint towards the door, but was much too slow as the devil instantly caught up to him, grabbing the scruff of his shirt and jerking him backwards, her tail sweeping out from her 'coat' and shutting the door with a bang.
"Now, are you going to answer me?" Kasdeya growled next to his ear, she could see sweat beading down his neck as his eyes shook.
The man replied in a fervent, panicked tone, though in a language which Kasdeya didn't understand in the slightest.
'Wait, do we speak different languages? But the important guy from earlier spoke in the same language as I did, so why can't this guy?'
The man continued to cry out in the foreign dialect, which seemed to irritate some part of her memory as she tried to comprehend the words but in the end, it was pointless and she had absolutely no clue as to what the man was spouting. Though considering the context she figured he was begging for his life or some such thing.
"Well this was wasted effort." she muttered to herself, dropping the man onto the floor and watching him scurry towards the door and flee.
"So that whole interaction was completely pointless, and since he's probably going to immediately tell his superiors about what just happened, all that exchange accomplished was angering someone.. But since everyone's gonna be pissed anyway, I might as well eat my food which was so considerately delivered to me, and take a much more active approach towards gaining information."
