#19 - Dragon Flame
Chapter 19 Dragonflame
January 23rd, the ninth day of the tour of Casterly Rock.
The caravan received a raven from the King early in the morning, instructing the Queen to stop the tour with her children and return to King's Landing as soon as possible.
In recent days, the Lannister forces in King's Landing had also been constantly relaying messages here.
The King did not react abnormally and decided to travel north to Winterfell to invite Lord Eddard Stark of the North to succeed as Hand of the King.
The Lannisters' secret was indeed kept.
So Duke Tywin continued his westward return, while Cersei and Jaime turned towards King's Landing with a small portion of their forces.
Joffrey couldn't care less about these things for the moment.
He had already accumulated 7 units of rune energy and was eager to solve the final mystery.
What exactly was the special sensation from the greatsword?
He had been speculating about it for days, but had delayed until now because he was unwilling to take irreversible destructive measures.
Now that he had sufficient rune energy, it would be much easier.
He would directly apply a restoration rune to the greatsword using rune energy. This would not only ensure that the greatsword was not completely destroyed, but also allow him to observe the external manifestation of the rune on the greatsword for comparison, killing two birds with one stone.
Just as he was about to take action, a handmaiden from the Queen's side came over, "Your Highness, the Queen has something to discuss with you."
Joffrey suddenly had a bad feeling.
...
Perhaps to ensure privacy, the luxurious and spacious wheeled carriage had no windows, and even in broad daylight, hundreds of scented candles were lit.
Joffrey boarded the wheeled carriage, and as he looked up, he saw Queen Cersei's worried and hesitant face illuminated by the red candlelight.
Looking inside the carriage, his younger brother and sister were not there, nor were there any serving attendants.
He roughly understood.
My dear grandfather has told my mother everything about me?
Even so, there was nothing to worry about. This world had no concept of soul possession. All his changes were gifts from the gods.
"Mother, I'm busy. Why did you call me over?" Joffrey sat down next to his mother and complained affectionately.
Cersei's mood was complicated.
"Joff," she asked, "Did you know early on that Jon Arryn would be in trouble, and also know about Jaime and my… affair?"
Joffrey lowered his eyes slightly, trying to alleviate Cersei's unease and shame.
"Not that early, just before the tournament."
An awkward silence fell.
In this world, Joffrey could be said to be the person who understood Cersei and Jaime the most, apart from themselves.
Cersei was arrogant and selfish, regarding herself as a female version of Duke Tywin, but she was also so emotional that she couldn't control her emotions and desires.
Jaime dreamed of becoming a true knight, but his affair with his sister, the Mad King's tyranny, and other experiences and observations constantly questioned his heart. The "Kingslayer" was destined to walk in darkness.
But Joffrey didn't care.
One's own people, friends, enemies, how simple and clear. Why make it so complicated?
To him, although he couldn't wholeheartedly recognize Cersei as his real mother, the deep maternal love was a real feeling.
The world's judgment was ultimately just fleeting clouds.
I am the center of the world.
He took his mother's cold little hand and looked frankly into her emerald eyes, which were glistening with tears.
"What's wrong with that? Haven't the Targaryens been like this for hundreds of years? In any case, it's enough as long as Mother is still my mother."
Joffrey smiled sincerely.
"I will always stand by you, Mother."
Cersei could no longer suppress the excitement in her heart and hugged her gentle and considerate son tightly.
Heaven knows how aggrieved and hateful she was about this marriage.
To Cersei, the young, brave, handsome Robert died on the wedding day, replaced by a fat, drunken, and irritable King, which was simply disgusting.
She poured out her inner bitterness to her good son.
Joffrey quietly played the role of listener, not intending to express any opinions.
He didn't expect to easily change Cersei's personality or behavior. As long as he maintained the current relationship between mother and son and paid attention to not letting her cause trouble in key matters, that would be enough.
Even the Joffrey in the original story could do whatever he wanted under Cersei's regency. He believed he would do better.
In a flash, it was evening.
Joffrey finally returned to his carriage.
Thinking of what he had experienced in the past half-day, he was still a little frightened. To be able to repeat the same meaning with different words for so long, women are truly terrifying.
Fortunately, he finally made it through.
He sat on the bed, placing the greatsword flat on his lap. He closed his eyes and cleared his mind.
The experiment continued.
After using it for these days, he was quite proficient in the process of meditating and driving rune energy. It only took him a dozen breaths to apply a restoration rune to the greatsword.
After repeating it twice, he opened his eyes and immediately made a key discovery.
For these newly born restoration runes, he could only vaguely sense their existence, but he couldn't see the white light that should have appeared!
In other words, the greatsword itself could shield the light emitted by magical energy.
Either there was a problem with its material;
Or there was some kind of rune or other ability with the same effect that could shield the aura of magic.
He drew out the magic-rich "Light of Peace."
Regardless of which guess was correct, or if none were, the greatsword already had at least three restoration runes, so he could experiment more boldly.
The "Light of Peace" chopped down, but instead of being cut in two, it suddenly got stuck about an inch deep into the greatsword.
Joffrey clearly felt that there was a harder material below.
He simply cut a circle along the outer edge of the greatsword, and in the middle was actually a neat piece of black metal.
The answer seemed clear.
A piece of Valyrian steel that was no longer precious and a specially purposed, chicken-rib material.
But his eyes were full of excitement.
The black metal radiated white, black, and red light. Two new runes!
After cleaning it up, an exquisite one-handed sword returned to this world. Its appearance was similar to Valyrian steel, but in reality, it was very different.
He chopped a dozen trees nearby into charcoal, and the magic energy on the sword finally dissipated, revealing unfamiliar patterns.
Fire magic?
This was the effect that genuine Valyrian steel should have. Could it be that the Valyrians were selling substandard products to the outside world, and keeping the good stuff for themselves?
Joffrey immediately began to meditate on the patterns on the one-handed sword.
After almost exhausting the accumulated rune energy, he finally obtained the first rune with an offensive attribute - the fire rune.
It was wonderful.
Almost without any practice, the scorching power that seemed to emerge continuously from his heart could be moved at will, obediently appearing wherever he wanted it to be: his mouth, fingertips, soles of his feet, and the sword's blade.
He felt the flow of fire.
The heat of the flame would only harm what he wanted to destroy, and even his clothes were spared. Even more powerful than the "Unburnt."
He had never felt so powerful.
The restoration rune was the starting point of his magic path, with good auxiliary effects;
The Mirror Image rune was the cornerstone of the magic network, with broad prospects, full of potential, and a very high upper limit;
But in the end, it was the simple and direct power of the fire rune that was even more shocking.
The power of fire, a power that the instinct of life feared.
How could life make fire submit?
At this moment, he transcended the limits of carbon-based life.
His burning eyes looked at the nameless one-handed sword. Let's call you "Dragonflame". May you and I soar through the sky like dragons, pouring down flames that are enough to burn the world to ashes.
