#39 - Farewell to Winterfell
Chapter 39: Farewell to Winterfell
The death of Maester Luwin cast a shadow over Winterfell.
This gray-haired, thin old man had served diligently for decades, and he had delivered every one of Lady Catelyn's children.
He had become a part of Winterfell.
Now, Winterfell had forever lost a respectable maester, lost the old man reading in the rookery, lost the teacher who told stories to the children and urged them to study.
"He was a good man."
"He was the most dedicated maester, upholding his oath and doing his duty throughout his life."
"Winterfell will remember his contributions. People will miss his kindness, wisdom, and character."
The friars recited prayers for the old man lying in the coffin.
"May he rest in peace in heaven…"
Maester Luwin was gradually buried into the cold, dark earth.
Duke Eddard and his wife stood in the front, and all the Stark vassals bowed their heads in silence. Bran and Arya cried the most sadly.
Sansa, with red eyes, threw herself into the prince's arms.
"May the gods have mercy and bless Maester Luwin's soul in heaven."
Joffrey comforted her, "They will."
Maester Luwin didn't have to die. It was a pity that he woke up at the wrong time.
Fortunately, the aftermath was handled fairly cleanly. The Starks only knew that someone had killed the old maester, and the investigation over the past few days had yielded nothing.
A bloody storm about to be unleashed by a secret letter was nipped in the bud. But only temporarily.
Joffrey couldn't help but have a headache.
Lysa Tully, what a crazy woman, actually daring to trust Littlefinger.
Lysa's identity was too clever, both Catelyn's sister and the wife of Prime Minister Jon Arryn. As long as she said that the Lannisters murdered the Prime Minister, it would be good if the Starks became suspicious.
For Joffrey, while he couldn't let the lion and the wolf get too close, he couldn't let them fight each other even more.
Fortunately, Lysa still had concerns in her heart. As long as she understood that the power of the throne was enough to destroy her and her weak son, she would shut up.
The burial ceremony in the chapel ended.
Joffrey thoughtfully took Sansa to the Godswood to soothe her mood.
The Godswood in the castle.
Old and thick oak trees often blocked the road, blue-gray sentinel trees grew hard needles, and the ironwood did not live up to its name, being black throughout and with hard wood.
This Godswood was consistent with the keynote of the North.
Cold, unsmiling, and tenacious.
They walked to the black water pool in the center of the forest. The branches and leaves of an ancient weirwood tree intertwined and spread, covering the entire lake like a dome.
Joffrey moved closer.
For thousands of years, the fallen leaves and branches of the weirwood tree had created soft soil. Every step you took, you could feel the ground reluctantly parting with the soles of the living.
The primeval forest had an unspeakable temperament, as if the old gods were staring at people with thousands of invisible eyes.
Joffrey stared at the deep and melancholy human face on the weirwood tree.
The pale bark made its deep-set eyes even more scarlet. Although it was just dried sap, it always made people think of blood.
Was the Three-Eyed Raven watching this side at this time?
Joffrey knew the raven's abilities. The weirwood tree was the raven's most powerful eye. The ancient weirwood tree held many memories, and the raven used it to observe the world.
Joffrey stretched out his palm and pressed it on that human face, and the flashback rune immediately presented him with countless scenes.
He also saw the past that the raven saw.
Sansa's mood was much better, "Father said we will set off south the day after tomorrow."
Joffrey turned around and hugged Sansa.
"Yes, thanks to Lord Eddard for not separating the two of us."
Sansa pushed him away shyly and angrily, "Where are we not separated? You're not going with us, and we might not see each other for months."
"Don't be angry, I have serious business to attend to."
He held up Sansa's face, "I have a surprise for you the day after tomorrow, guess what it is."
"What surprise?"
Joffrey smiled mysteriously, "You'll know when the time comes."
Sansa kicked him in anger.
… …
Winterfell became busy.
Duke Stark, who was about to go south to take over as Hand of the King, was about to take away almost half of his manpower.
The second son Bran, the eldest daughter Sansa, and the second daughter Arya would all embark on the journey with their father and live in the Red Keep of King's Landing.
Winterfell's Steward Vayon Poole, Sansa's best friend Jeyne Poole, Captain of the Guard Jory Cassel, Master of the Horse Hullen, and Septa Mordane, among other retainers, would all accompany them.
At this time, the sky had just dawned.
The east gate of Winterfell was full of people saying goodbye and seeing them off.
Bran excitedly rode a tall steed, crookedly driving from the city to the gate.
He saw the crown prince by the roadside.
"Your Highness." Bran bent down. The dream that night was not the end. The crown prince had also given him a mysterious power to resist the monster's attack.
Bran only felt deeply grateful for this.
Joffrey waved his hand, "Goodbye to King's Landing, be careful along the way."
Bran nodded as seriously as possible, and then galloped towards the King's Road outside the door. This feeling was great!
Arya also rushed over at this time, her target was Jon beside Joffrey.
"Jon, I'll miss you."
Jon rubbed his little sister's hair, "I miss you too. Don't worry, we'll see each other again."
Joffrey took out a steel piece and handed it to Arya.
"Here's something for you. This is a treasure. With it, you and Jon can chat across the entire North."
Arya hesitated and took it.
Jon smiled and pulled out his necklace. Hanging on the necklace was an identical steel piece.
He said to the steel piece, "Arya, this is real."
Arya heard Jon's voice and the voice on the steel piece at the same time.
"Wow!"
She glanced at Joffrey, and the inexplicable resistance in her heart instantly dissipated for the most part, "Thank you."
Joffrey returned a smile, "Goodbye."
"Good nephew, look who's here." Tyrion really hated his short legs.
Cersei hugged Joffrey reluctantly.
"Little Joff, what are you thinking? The Wall is so cold. Did Tyrion instigate you to go?"
"See, it's my fault again!" Tyrion complained softly to Jaime next to him.
Joffrey patted his mother's back, "It has nothing to do with Uncle. I wanted to see the Wall myself and express the royal family's concern to the Night's Watch."
"Mother, please rest assured, nothing will happen."
He winked at Tommen and Myrcella behind Cersei.
After spending these days together, his younger brother and sister had a much better impression of him. He finally got two smiles.
Cersei stepped onto the wheelhouse worriedly.
Finally.
Sansa, in a silver-white leather robe, walked gracefully.
"Where's the surprise?"
Sansa was full of expectation.
Joffrey took out a wooden plate, covered with a bright red cloth over his farewell gift.
"Uncover it and take a look."
Sansa pinched a corner of the red cloth and slowly lifted it up.
"So beautiful."
Everyone's eyes were attracted to it.
Crystal clear like frost and snow, ice blue like the deep sea, clusters of roses gathered together to form a gorgeous and bright queen's crown.
Joffrey placed the rose crown on Sansa's head.
"These are Winter Roses grown in the glass gardens, they were born to belong to you."
"That spring, Rhaegar disregarded everything and gave this laurel crown to Lyanna, the queen of love and beauty in his heart. My love at this time is ten thousand times more ardent than his."
"That was a wrong spring."
Joffrey held the girl's hand tightly, "But we will definitely have the most perfect ending."
Sansa blushed.
