In the evening, the worried Sullivan left the office and went to a party in a villa.
This was a regular meeting between Sullivan and a few friends. They were not all members of Mercury Balance, but from various factions. Because they graduated from the Rainbow Tower High-level Magic Academy at the same time, they had maintained a certain level of contact after graduation.
They would find a day to meet each month and share some of their own research and daily life together. This habit had been maintained for several years.
"Sullivan, you are a bit late today."
As soon as Sullivan stepped into the villa, a man in a glamorous robe greeted him. His name was Nicholas, and he was also the owner of this villa. He had been stuck in the third ring for many years. Probably he had given up hope of advancing long ago, he served as a magic consultant for several earls, made a lot of money, and bought many real estates.
"Delayed by something."
Sullivan smiled helplessly. He had been thinking about Reiner's papers in his mind all the way.
Part of the materials needed to verify that the paper could be received from the Rainbow Tower, but Sullivan believed that experiments should be carried out more extensively, so he applied for magic materials from ten half-planes and prepared to repeat Reiner's experiment.
"It's okay, we have just started."
Nicholas led Sullivan into the restaurant. Seven or eight mages similar to their age were already seated and were talking to each other excitedly.
"The thesis of His Excellency Newington and Holland really surprised me. I didn't expect that there was such a simple and beautiful equation. Thinking that His Excellency Newington, who graduated five years earlier than us, and His Excellency Holland was just one term higher than us, I really feel my incompetence."
A man with glasses said, he shook his head and drank the red wine in the glass.
"Luvas, you married the most beautiful girl in our class. It seems a bit funny for you to say this?"
Opposite him, a burly man yelled, causing the woman beside the man with glasses to smile slightly with embarrassment.
"His Excellency Newington and His Excellency Penzance broke up because of a dispute over ideas. Now, His Excellency Newington has proved that light is indeed a wave. I don't know how His Excellency Penzance will respond."
Another man wearing an old mage robe said, and at the same time caught a glimpse of Sullivan and Nicholas who were walking in.
"Huh? Sir Sullivan of Mercury Balance is here."
The crowd immediately became lively again.
Sullivan was the highest rank among these people and served as a senior reviewer, so naturally, he was also the central figure.
Most of the topics of their gatherings were related to magic, and the recent dispute over the essence of light was a very good topic.
However, their level was not high, at most, they could only discuss the papers of high-level mages. However, not many people could fully understand them. They could only talk about them in general.
"Sullivan, why are you so glum today?"
Nicholas was good at dealing with people, and he soon noticed Sullivan's strangeness. He patted Sullivan who was sitting next to him, and asked in a hearty voice.
"Nothing."
Sullivan shook his head. Originally, he didn't want to say anything, but seeing everyone's focus on himself, it was not easy to reply in a perfunctory manner, so he thought about it, and said.
"Do you know Reiner Ian Gray?"
His words immediately silenced the originally noisy restaurant.
"What did you say?!"
The man called Luvas asked as if he hadn't heard Sullivan's words clearly.
"Reiner Ian Gray, the winner of this year's Hohenheim Golden Cup who has obtained two brand-new elements through electrolysis of water."
Sullivan explained. For non-mercury balance mages who were not often in contact with cutting-edge academics, Reiner's name was far less famous than his thesis. After finishing speaking, Sullivan added one more sentence.
"I received one of his papers today, it's about elements."
Then, Sullivan briefly talked about the ideas of Reiner's paper and told several others that he was going to do experiments to verify the content of the paper himself.
"This is too counterintuitive, why the same element has different qualities."
The burly man said. He specialized in elemental studies. Although he didn't deal with the real elements much, the theory of the elements was still the basis for him to build spells.
"But this theory must be proved by finding that, uh, isotope, right?"
Luvas said that as a Professor at his old school, he was not unfamiliar with basic magic research.
"Who knows, let's drink."
Sullivan shook his head. Since the annual meeting, he had always had a faint hunch that the times were about to take a big step forward, and whether he could keep up with this trend was still unknown. This sense of powerlessness, perhaps, was the truest portrayal of Sullivan's heart when facing Reiner's thesis.
"Yes, let's drink."
Nicholas toasted and drank the old red wine in one go.
"Speaking of His Excellency Holland, I remember that there was another student in the school with excellent grades. What was it called?"
After three rounds of wine, Luvas began to recall the past.
"Was there?"
Nicholas touched his head for a while, but couldn't remember anything.
"You are talking about Kailavin, right? At the time, Holland's overall score was always the first, and he always changed between the second and the third place."
Sullivan replied. He was considered an honor student when he was in school, and he still had some impression of the number of people with good grades.
"Yes, Kailavin, I don't know how he is. I heard that he didn't stay in the Rainbow Tower because of family reasons after graduation, and he went straight back to his hometown."
Luvas said. He paused, took a sip of wine, and then continued.
"I forgot where I heard it, but two years ago, he seemed to be doing some theories about the masses of the elements, but I didn't take it to heart. But now that I think about it again, it sounds very similar to what you just said."
"What did you say?!"
Sullivan was taken aback immediately. He stood up, his eyes widened in shock.
"Uh, I was on a business trip at that time, and then Kailavin found me and said that he wanted me to see his magic, and hoped that I would be able to identify some special elements, but the magic failed, so I didn't keep it in mind too much. I left him a piece of contact information and then came back."
Luvas' words caused Sullivan's slightly ignited flame to be immediately extinguished.
Sullivan sat down slowly, still in a trance.
He then thought about it. Although Kailavin's magic failed at that time, maybe he had improved in the past two years, he could still visit the other party.
Then Sullivan decided that after he got the experimental materials and verified Reiner's thesis, if necessary, he would pay a visit to his Senior, Kailavin
