Harry Potter and the Candy Factory
#127 - gold
As evening approached, Charlie stood by the window, gazing quietly into the distance. The moon had just risen, but the sun had not yet set. The red hues of the sunset painted half the sky, intermingling with the other half's night sky, merging into one at the horizon, forming a natural beauty that couldn't help but evoke admiration.
However, Charlie's thoughts were not focused on the scenery; he was waiting, waiting for Fionn's arrival.
Based on the previous completion reward delivery times, he believed that Fionn would soon return and deliver his reward.
Truthfully, more than the candy snow lemon with its luck bonus, he was looking forward to the "special type magic item" displayed on the transparent template.
He had never encountered anything like this before, piquing his curiosity.
As he had anticipated, before long, a black dot in the distant horizon became increasingly clear, revealing Fionn's silhouette.
Its wings fluttered, bathed in the red glow of the setting sun, feathers fluttering in the wind, looking exceptionally beautiful, unlike the lazy bird that usually stayed in its office sleeping.
Beneath it, two powerful claws firmly gripped a cloth pouch.
Without a doubt, it contained what Charlie was anticipating.
"Coo—"
Seemingly noticing Charlie waiting by the window, Fionn opened its beak and let out a clear, long cry.
As if greeting Charlie, or perhaps reminding him to open the window.
Having a tacit understanding, Charlie naturally understood, smiled, waved to the distant bird, and then smoothly pulled open the window.
The evening breeze rushed in through the open glass window, carrying the coolness of autumn, along with a faint, fresh scent, rustling the edges of the documents on his desk, creating a pleasant "shasha" sound.
Enjoying the comfort of the autumn breeze on his face, Charlie couldn't help but relax, his smile becoming more genuine.
Watching Fionn getting closer, he gently stepped back, then twisted his body, clearing a path from the window for the bird to land.
Immediately, the next second, Fionn, unable to brake due to its excessive speed, transformed into a brown streak of light, "whoosh," directly diving into the office.
Its wings frantically flapped, desperately trying to slow down, tumbling clumsily on the carpet a few times, before crashing headfirst into the door panel with a muffled "thud."
"Hahahaha… silly bird."
Seeing this, Charlie naturally offered merciless ridicule.
This wasn't the first time this had happened. Ever since Fionn had become increasingly plump, every aerial dive ended in this manner.
Yet, it seemed oblivious. Every so often, it would impulsively attempt it, even though each attempt ended in failure, it persisted, addicted to it.
Before it had gained weight, Fionn's flying skills were so superb that every one of its kind marveled at it.
But now… the less said, the better.
Smiling, Charlie moved. Leisurely stepping forward, he bent down and picked up the cloth bag from the ground, not opening it immediately, but weighing it in his hand, estimating its weight.
Hmm… light as a feather, almost weightless, as if there was nothing inside except a roll of parchment.
Seeming to hear the undisguised schadenfreude in his laughter, Fionn struggled to roll its stout body over.
Its claws flailed wildly in the air, frantically searching for balance.
Even so, it still took a great deal of effort to stand up again.
The moment it stood up, it glared angrily at Charlie, then unleashed a series of clear, melodious, and charming cries, varying the tune, pouring out from its honey-glazed beak.
"Li—gugu, ga!!"
While scolding, as if still not over it, its small claws stomped alternately on the carpet under its feet.
Charlie didn't stop it, as if he was already used to it. He preoccupied himself with weighing the cloth bag in his hand, walked behind the desk, and plopped back into his chair.
After a while, when Fionn finally tired of its random venting, it stopped chirping and began to preen its disheveled feathers, as if sulking.
"Alright, you've worked hard."
Charlie understood his bird's temper and skillfully grabbed a handful of owl food, placed it on the table, and softly comforted it.
"Hualala" The sound of the food scattering and colliding with the table came.
The moment before, Fionn, who had been preening with its head lowered, immediately brightened its eyes, the anger in its heart completely dissipated. Spreading its wings, it flapped onto the desk, preparing to wholeheartedly enjoy its deserved "reward."
… … … … … … … … … … … … …
After settling Fionn down, Charlie could finally shift all his attention to the item in his hand.
Opening the cloth bag, he took out the new parchment and casually placed it aside.
The most anticipated special magic item finally slid into his palm—a gold coin.
Charlie raised an eyebrow, playing with the gold coin with a hint of awkwardness between his fingers. Its weight and size were almost identical to a Galleon, leaving him momentarily at a loss.
"So… what's this for?"
He narrowed his eyes, bringing the coin closer to observe the patterns and subtle engravings, muttering to himself.
The coin looked somewhat old. The densely packed circle of spells engraved around the outer edge was already impossible to discern in detail. Even the central pattern had become quite blurred, only vaguely showing two faces of an old man, one kind and gentle, the other furious and ferocious.
However, even so, through the vivid depiction of the expressions, one could still feel the exquisiteness and detail of its craftsmanship.
This also made him certain that although this coin was almost the same as a Galleon, it was definitely not an equivalent that could be mass-produced and used as currency…
"Perhaps…" Charlie seemed to have thought of something, and began to sort out his thoughts.
He closed his eyes and began to try further, controlling his magic with the same precision and subtlety as before, guiding it into the gold coin.
The next second, as a steady stream of magic permeated it, supplying it with energy, the circle of spells covering the outer edge of the coin began to slowly rotate clockwise in a regular pattern.
And the coin itself, accompanied by a faint, almost imperceptible hum, trembled slightly.
Although he didn't open his eyes, Charlie clearly felt the subtle changes in the coin between his fingers, and that the magic he was outputting was being continuously absorbed by it, and a hint of joy appeared on his face.
In any case, at least this direction was correct!
So, he calmed down and continued to release the magic.
Sure enough, the amplitude of the coin's tremor became more and more intense, and a faint light began to penetrate from the inside out. Those traces that had been eroded by the years were miraculously filled and repaired by the magic, instantly revealing its original exquisite form…
The magic inside the coin was now full, devouring about a quarter of Charlie's own magic before ceasing to absorb.
So he stopped, slowly opened his eyes, raised his eyebrows, looked at the incredible scene before him, and waited to see what would happen next.
He knew that although a quarter of Charlie's magic didn't sound like much, it was actually comparable to the entire amount of most adult wizards!
A magic item that required so much magic to officially activate made Charlie even more curious about what its use was.
Just as he was thinking, with a "buzz," the coin moved on its own.
Caught off guard, it slipped out of his hand and drew a beautiful arc in the air before landing on the table with a "slap."
The side facing Charlie was the angry face of the old man.
The old man's eyes suddenly shone, the expression on his face became even more vivid, even as if he was about to come alive in the next second, struggling to emerge from the coin.
Charlie's breathing faltered slightly, his eyes widening as he looked at it.
Even Fionn stopped eating, raised its head, and couldn't help but look over.
However, nothing happened. Soon, the light in the old man's eyes faded, and the coin returned to its original appearance, dim and blurred.
And when Charlie carefully picked it up again and looked at it in his palm, he was shocked to find that the magic inside had completely dissipated, leaving nothing behind…
