He's The One™
Chapter 24:Life Apart (Part 2)
When he found out that she had died, he was in denial. He didn't believe that Kaia could've possibly died when he had protected her from the bullets. The bodyguards and the police officers present all said that Kaia had stayed at the hospital and watched over him for a few days before leaving about a week before he woke up. They also said that Kaia hadn't been harmed by the bullets and only suffered from shock. Even his parents could confirm the fact that Kaia hadn't been hurt during the shooting.
His parents told him that they had rushed to the hospital the day he was brought in for surgery. Since he was unconscious and needed time to heal, they had entrusted him to Kaia so that they could manage Sabor Sights in his place.
Alex continued his interrogation and found out that a few days after he was admitted into the hospital, she had told the bodyguards to contact his parents and inform them that she had to leave. She had left strict instructions for them to notify his parents about it a day after she left. Her reason for having the bodyguards contact his parents a day after was due to the fact that it was going to be dark soon and his parents would be worn out from work. She also ordered for more bodyguards to come and watch over Alex in the meantime for extra security. The bodyguards merely followed instructions thinking she was worrying about his parents and would be back before they knew it. After all, they could tell how sincere she was towards Alex.
After hearing all these things, Alex became slightly distraught. He couldn't help but feel anxious and frustrated. He felt anger for not being able to say his final words to her. He was also angry at how helpless he was.
Even though he felt this way, Alex never showed it on the outside. Whenever people were nearby, he would try his best to assume a calm and collected expression. But on the inside, he was fighting a battle with himself. He kept on thinking about what could've been done differently.
He tried to find out how Kaia could've possibly died. Since he was staying at the hospital that Kaia went to, he tried to gain access to her patient records but the doctors were unwilling to let him see Kaia's file because it was confidential information. It didn't matter how much Alex was willing to pay or donate to the hospital because they didn't want to be sued for releasing patient records. They also didn't want the hospital's reputation to be damaged. Even if Alex brought in their marriage certificate, if the patient hadn't given permission to the hospital to release the patient's records, the hospital wouldn't be allowed to give access. Besides, Alex wasn't Kaia's designated personal representative, so he didn't have the legal right to her patient records, even though she was "dead".
Disheartened by this, he could only continue to grieve her death. As Crestfall Industries' enemy, he would have no right to go to her funeral if there was one. Especially because her parents didn't even know about their marriage and would probably not accept it.
He stayed in the hospital for the months following his awakening to fully recover. He also needed to follow a strict diet and exercise plan to help him in his recovery.
-----
A few days before Caine took over Crestfall Industries, Naomi submitted a letter of resignation. She knew she wouldn't be able to handle being in the same environment as him. She was Kaia's secretary and personal assistant and would rather die than complete even a simple task for Caine. Especially since she knew what actually happened, as well as what kind of person he was.
That very same day, she went to the hospital to see Alex. Naomi had Kaia's V.I.P access card for the elevator so she was able to go up to the V.I.P floor. But when she arrived on the floor that Alex was on and headed to his room, she was stopped by the bodyguards. Naomi frowned and swatted at the bodyguard's hands. "Don't touch me! I need to see Alexander Sabor! Now!" she ordered in an authoritative tone.
The bodyguard wasn't having it though. He refused to let her come even an inch closer to Alex's door. He also disliked her attitude and the way she tried to order them. But one of the other guards beside him decided to knock and inform Alex about the situation. He opened the door upon Alex's approval and cleared his throat before saying, "Mr. Sabor, there is a woman out here causing a disturbance. I don't know how she got to this floor but she wants to see you."
Alex looked up, his hair which was usually tied back was now flowing down to his neck. "Did she tell you who she is?" he asked with a slight frown. Before the bodyguard could say anything, a voice outside shouted, "ALEXXX!!! IT'S ME, NAOMI!!!" She was waving her arms and trying to push through while several bodyguards tried to block her way.
Alex was stunned before waving his hand and saying, "Let her in. She's fine." He sat up on his bed, watching as Naomi glared at the bodyguards with indignation before entering the room.
Naomi turned her head away from the bodyguard and looked at Alex. Her heart dropped. She grabbed a chair next to his bed with a worried expression. Alex looked at her and frowned. Just the expression alone told him that it wasn't good news that she was bearing. He tightly clenched his blankets. "Naomi, please tell me…what went wrong? How did she die?" he asked, slightly choking on the lump rising in his throat. Naomi hated lying to Alex, especially since he was in such a state, but Kaia made her promise to tell such a lie for his safety.
She took a deep breath. "Well, Kaia left the hospital that night and was mugged on the way back." Naomi hesitated slightly as she told him. 'Why did Kaia have to come up with such a story to trick him into thinking she was dead?' she thought. After the slight pause, Naomi continued, "She ended up getting fatally stabbed in her abdomen. When someone found her lying in a pool of blood, they immediately called the ambulance and she was rushed back here. She was immediately sent into surgery….and...well with her Aplastic Anemia, her platelets were lower than normal. She had been bleeding for awhile and even with all the blood transfusions, she just kept on bleeding. The bleeding was too much. It was to the point that she lost more blood than the amount she was getting from the transfusions..." Naomi looked down, clutching her knee. She slowly finished, "Because of her special condition, they were unsure of whether or not it was because her body was rejecting the blood due to something wrong with the antigens. They weren't able to figure things out in time...and she…"
Alex had been listening to all this quietly while staring down absentmindedly at his clenched fists. 'Maybe I'm a magnet of bad luck for Kaia,' he thought. After awhile, Alex slowly looked up at Naomi with a pained expression. "How do you know all this?" Naomi flinched slightly before carefully looking up at him. "Well...her parents told me. They sealed off her records, but I was her closest friend and secretary so they told me what happened." Alex sighed, running a hand through his disheveled bedhead.
Naomi was saddened by his expression. Alex's expression looked so pained and pitiful. She really wanted to blurt out the truth and tell him where Kaia really was, but she knew how dire the situation was.
Naomi cleared her throat. "On another note, seeing as Kaia passed away, Caine is going to take over as CEO. He managed to become CEO because..." She stopped and emphasized with her fingers. "Because...he was her fiance..." Naomi sighed and sat back into the chair. "I gave in my resignation today." Alex looked up at her before laying back down on his bed. "Come work for Sabor Sights, then," he said without even thinking too much into it. Naomi blinked with a flabbergasted expression. "W--why? I worked at the enemy company!"
Alex sighed before replying, "We were classmates once. Friends should help each other out. Besides you're a capable secretary and...you were the closest to Kaia…" he almost croaked out the last words as tears started to form in his eyes. He covered his face with a hand.
"I'll call my parents and let them know. They're the ones managing Sabor Sights for me while I'm recovering. I'm sorry but I need some time alone now.If you need anything, just ask Zac..." he said before removing his hand to look at her. "Visit again when you can." He gave her a weak smile. Naomi nodded slightly and offered a weak smile back before she stood up. "Get better soon and don't overthink things because things aren't always what they seem to be…" she softly said as she left the room. She was trying to hint at the fact that Kaia wasn't dead. Although she promised not to tell, dropping a few hints here and there wouldn't count as breaking the promise. It wasn't like she had directly told him. Everything counted on Alex because he would be the one to put the pieces together. Plus, she didn't like how depressed Alex was. She hoped he would find out as soon as possible and help her so she could come back.
Alex had planned on placing Naomi in a high position close to him. He knew he could trust Naomi to keep his company's confidential information secret, as well as completing whatever tasks he would assign her in the future to the best of her ability. He took a mental note to discuss with Zac about having Naomi as his assistant. As Zac's assistant, Naomi would be placed in a position right under Zac. If Zac was busy and Naomi was around, she would be the one to handle any requests and tasks that needed Zac's attention. Since Naomi had worked at Crestfall Industries in such a high position, it wouldn't be strange if people found out and questioned her loyalty. This was also part of the reason why he had personally given her a position close to him. It would serve as a form of protection--even if Naomi was quite feisty and could handle any shade thrown at her. Plus, Zac was a busy man and was usually around anyways, so Naomi would most likely be given side tasks to complete. As a capable and hardworking assistant, it wouldn't be long before she would redeem herself to the employees in the company.
After Alex was released from the hospital, he kept to himself for a few weeks. He still constantly thought and wondered about how things could've been different. Even though it wasn't his fault, he still blamed himself. The "death" of Kaia made him colder but more efficient. Once he returned to work, he was more focused than ever. Especially after he heard about what happened to Crestfall Industries after Caine took over.
Even though Alex was strict and domineering, Caine was plain evil. He gave the artists that were popular an overload of work, as well as accepting contracts without consulting their managers and the artists themselves. He was also extremely biased about giving work to certain artists. He even flirted and harrased most of the females who weren't doing well. Some of the managers of artists at Crestfall Industries didn't like the way the company was run by Caine and quit. They dispersed into different companies and some even brought their artists along with them. Caine was angered beyond words by this and set the new lawyers that he hired loose on the managers and artists for breaching their contracts. It became a huge court case battle between the managers, who had gotten help from a mysterious person, and Caine.
With help from Naomi and Zac, Alex's return to work was as smooth as possible. He was able to reorganize some of the managers and artists from Crestfall Industries into his company, as well as personally handling some of the distribution of work. He also snatched deals with top entertainment shows and magazines who were previously committed to Crestfall Industries under Kaia. Within a few short months, Sabor Sights rose above Crestfall Industries due to their skyrocketing sales. Alex worked very hard to keep it that way.
--
One day, Kaia suddenly called Naomi about something serious. Naomi was startled and extremely worried. She quickly made up an excuse about something happening to her grandfather and her needing to fly out and see him. She was granted a few days off and flew out to the countryside. Naomi was in utter shock when she found out Kaia's reason for calling her.
