He's The One™

Chapter 39:My Name Is Mia

When Alexa opened the door and spoke, Kaia flinched and instinctively spun around. She stared at Alexa with a guilty expression as fear coursed throughout her body. "A—Alexa? What are you doing here?" she asked nervously.

Alex watched Kaia's nervous and shocked expression before turning his attention to Alexa. Alex ran a hand through his hair before saying, "Hey Alexa...yes I'm really your daddy. But you must've already figured it out the day I showed you the picture, right?" he asked, walking over to Alexa. He bent down to get eye level with the little girl. He wiped away the stray tears that hadn't dried on Alexa's tear stained face before opening his arms as an invitation for a hug.

Alexa didn't hesitate to walk up and wrap her arms around Alex's neck tightly. She quietly nodded, giving his neck a good squeeze as she broke into a big smile. "You really are my daddy... I knew it! I could feel it whenever you hugged me..." she said before looking up at Kaia. She hesitated slightly as she studied her mum's tear stained face. "Mummy...can Papa Alex come to our house? Pleaaseee? I want him to meet Zander..." She gave Kaia the most adorable puppy eyes as she looked up at Kaia pleadingly.

Kaia stared at her daughter who was embracing her father for the first time in front of her. Her heart warmed up at the sight. She only saw this through the many photos that Naomi had sent her. Seeing the scene in front of her felt so surreal. It was almost like a dream...but Alex's pained expression and his reaction was all too real...

She exhaled softly, wiping her cheeks and taking deep breaths in and out to calm herself. Finally, she mustered the brightest smile she could manage at the moment. She nodded softly, "If he has time, he can come over and have dinner with us."

Suddenly, Kaia looked up, finally noticing the heartbroken Trevor at the door. Her brows furrowed slightly with a worried expression. "I'm so sorry Trevor...but I can take Alexa home today. Thank you so much for coming all this way just to pick her up though." She gave him a weak and apologetic smile.

Trevor nodded subconsciously, like a soulless paper doll. He hadn't fully registered everything that Kaia had said because he was too focused on what he had heard. "Alright, umm...if you need me, just...call," was all he responded before leaving. Trevor stumbled slightly down the hallways. This was worse than any rejection he could've ever imagined...

Alex turned around to look at Kaia as he hugged Alexa. The little girl's presence comforted him as his heart beat rapidly. There was so much he wanted to know and say to Kaia. But he was still tongue-tied and didn't know where to begin. Kaia felt the same way as she noticed his conflicted gaze. She immediately looked away. She didn't want to face him again because she wasn't mentally prepared. She was scared that she would break down in front of him again. It was embarrassing because she knew she owed him an explanation, which she wasn't sure how to give given her circumstances.

She turned around and went to her desk, grabbing her keys and her bag. "Alright, we'll go check up on Zander first. He needs to be fed," she said as she walked past them. At this point, she knew she was walking on eggshells and needed to be careful. She didn't know what was going to happen. Afterall, she couldn't tell Alex the truth. Not yet anyways...

Plus, Kaia couldn't look Alex in the eye because a part of her was scared that he would take Alexa away from her. Alexa meant everything to Kaia and despite always being busy with school, she was a still a very caring and good mother.

She looked down at the ground as she locked up her classroom before they headed out. Alexa was smiling brightly as Alex and her spoke to one another. Kaia on the other hand walked a few steps behind with her head down.

Zac just finished his call with Naomi and walked into the school building only to bump into Alex, Alexa and Kaia. He saw the scene in front of him and blinked. He looked between Alex and Kaia who was following a few steps behind before finally setting his sights on Alex. "Naomi says everything is going good over on her end."

Alex nodded. "Alright, we're going to meet Zander the horse now. You can come to if you want..." He glanced at Kaia. "Right, Kaia?" Kaia flinched slightly. Everytime he said her name, it made her heart ache. She looked up and nodded. "Yea, sure. But don't call me Kaia anymore. My name is now Mia…" she insisted before walking ahead. She briskly walked past the entrance to the school building and down the stairs.
