Hogwarts: Wizards of Eternity

#156 - Let the mind transcend the universe

Ancient magic differed from modern magic in many ways, and Roger had spoken to Harry about its instability and the difficulty in controlling it.

But ancient magic had another major problem: "direction"!

If the direction was wrong, the more you tried, the more wrong you would be.

It was like aiming to improve grades, but instead of studying hard, trying to improve your cheating skills.

In the short term, it might be effective, but in the long run, it wasn't a good thing.

Many ancient magic practices from the closed-door era suffered from this problem.

So, after Roger finished reading the knowledge left behind by Slytherin, he found that the gains were not as great as he had imagined.

But his trip was not in vain; Roger gained other things that were extraordinarily meaningful to him.

"It's solved just like that?" Outside the Chamber of Secrets, Snape, the only one among the crowd who didn't understand three-dimensional magic, flashed a hint of disbelief in his eyes as he looked at the box Dumbledore was carrying.

That was a Basilisk!

However, recalling the posture Roger and Dumbledore displayed before entering the Chamber of Secrets, Snape quickly figured it out.

Glancing left and right at the expressions of Nicolas Flamel and Professor McGonagall, Snape, with his rich experience, instantly understood that,

something was going on, and he was the only one who didn't know.

But he wasn't being excluded from a certain circle.

As for the reason, Snape remembered the words Roger had said to him after Snape's casual remark had inspired Roger at the end of the previous school year.

Having an idea in his mind, Snape didn't say anything, nor did he question any of the phenomena on Roger and Dumbledore. Since there was a place for him here, it was best to let things take their course.

Just as he believed Roger's 'prediction' that Lily would be redeemed, he also believed that the Seer would provide the best arrangement.

"This was never a difficult problem; it's just that it's best to make thorough preparations for everything," Roger said with a smile.

When Roger went back in time just now, he had conveniently searched the place with Dumbledore, confirming that there were no other hidden dangers inside before the two of them left the Chamber of Secrets.

After exiting the Chamber of Secrets, Dumbledore chatted briefly with the other three professors stationed outside, and then, seeing that there was nothing else he needed to help with, Snape and Professor McGonagall left.

It was late, and wizards were also human; they needed to rest, so they went back to sleep.

Nicolas Flamel originally wanted to leave as well, but Roger kept him behind.

He still had some things to discuss with Nicolas Flamel.

"...Are you crazy?!" Nicolas Flamel's fair and rosy childlike face was now filled with shock.

Even though he had lived for over six hundred years, he had never heard of anyone wanting to do such a thing!

"I'm not crazy," Roger waved his hand.

"Eternal life is already a nearly impossible path; I'm just choosing to place a heavier bet in order to obtain it."

"But this is too..." Nicolas Flamel still found it hard to understand.

"You're only 12 years old this year, a time when you're like the rising sun, with unlimited possibilities. You can take it step by step, try all sorts of paths, and then do this when there's no other way."

Roger wanted Nicolas Flamel to help optimize his Second Brain. Nicolas Flamel would provide the "design draft," and Roger would be responsible for experimenting to create multi-threaded thinking.

Then, he would use a similar method to optimize the virtual reality technology as well.

If it were just that, Nicolas Flamel wouldn't think there was anything wrong.

But Roger's ultimate goal in optimizing these things made him feel terrified!

Question.

How can one maintain immortality in the mind?

Nicolas Flamel's answer was "face it," accept all the hardships in fate, and even face death with composure. But this answer, in Roger's eyes, was basically equal to 'giving up'.

This was not the path to eternal life.

Dumbledore, on the other hand, had no path at all. He was even more inclined to drift with the tide. Although he was in his prime among the top wizards, his mentality was already terribly old.

And Voldemort's answer was "engrave," to engrave his most glorious moments into Horcruxes.

This was actually a feasible path, but Roger didn't agree. He didn't think that the 'past me' replacing the current me was a continuation of the self.

Rather than saying it was eternal life, it was more like constantly creating new lives, these different lives always using the same name and having the same social identity.

So, what was Roger's answer?

After a conversation with Snape at the train station a few months ago, Roger understood.

Whether it was the past me, the present me, or the future me, perhaps the superficial personality would have some slight changes, but some of the most 'essential' things remained unchanged.

Everything changes, but change itself is unchanging!

What Roger wanted to do was to use the power of multi-threaded thinking, virtual worlds, and Time-Turners to find the 'unchanging' thing in his heart!

That was Roger's answer.

True Self!

No matter how his physical body, soul, or way of perceiving the outside world changed, no matter what changes occurred in the world, society, or his interpersonal relationships.

That trace of true self would not change.

As long as he grasped that trace of true self, Roger could maintain immortality in his mind at any time.

It sounded a bit obscure, but in Nicolas Flamel's eyes, changing it to another term would make it understandable to almost everyone.

Reincarnation!

"Theoretically, this might be feasible, but the probability of success is too low, so low that I can hardly calculate it," Nicolas Flamel's expression was very serious.

Even with the face of a child, one could feel the solemnity in his words. The sense of oppression would probably make ordinary people's legs go weak in front of him.

According to Roger's idea, he would record all the Time-Turner data he had recorded during his travels in Europe into virtual reality, and then split his own thinking.

Artificially create reincarnation and experience the lives of countless beings in history at the same time!

Conservatively estimated, when the plan was completed, he would spend hundreds of billions of years in subjective time.

If he were more radical, increasing that number by another order of magnitude was not impossible.

You should know that the universe has only been around for about 13.8 billion years!

To temper one's mind with such a long period of time, even if it was just immersing oneself in the illusion of time to experience the lives of others, rather than truly living through them, was an incredibly terrifying thing.

Anyway, Nicolas Flamel couldn't imagine how Roger could withstand such a long and terrifying time and still keep his mind unchanged.

This wasn't just simply enduring time; Roger also had to completely immerse his mind in the emotions of billions of creatures.

Facing Nicolas Flamel's seriousness, Roger showed a gentle smile on his face.

"I know what you're thinking."

When Roger revealed a bit of his path to Dumbledore, Dumbledore had a reaction similar to Nicolas Flamel's.

"You think I'm still very young now, and perhaps the future me will be able to go very far on the path of magic."

"When my magic reaches perfection, it might be better to deal with this problem later."

"That's right!" Nicolas Flamel nodded; that was what he meant.

But Roger hadn't finished speaking; he then continued, "But there's one thing you might not have thought about."

"The path to eternal life itself is almost impossible; it's destined to be difficult, and spiritual cultivation is difficult to borrow from external methods."

"Perhaps in the next few hundred or thousands of years, I will have a more stable way, but no matter what, this kind of change in the mind cannot be without risk."

Speaking of this, Roger's expression also became serious: "My will is very firm, but I am still human after all."

"My will has limits, and my will also has weaknesses."

"Precisely because I am young, I don't have any deep bonds in this world yet."

"Suppose one day in the future, I have close friends, family, lovers, or even children."

"Then."

"Can I still calmly - face death?!" Roger spoke the last few words with a deliberate emphasis.

Roger sincerely believed that dedicating his entire life to what he believed was the most correct thing,

and living a life without regrets, was an extremely romantic thing.

But when life has other ties, can people still devote everything to accomplishing one thing?

Roger hadn't faced this problem, so he didn't know the answer.

Now, he didn't want to give himself the chance to face this problem.

Human nature is complex, and people with even a little bit of wisdom wouldn't test human nature.

When you want to test whether a glass will be broken, it will definitely break, even if it is very strong.

Because he was young, he shouldn't take this risk?

In Roger's eyes, it was the opposite.

Being young was precisely when he was most suitable to do this thing.

Roger met Nicolas Flamel's gaze. After Nicolas Flamel's de-aging, he was much shorter than Roger. He looked up and stared at Roger's eyes, seeing the determination to face death as if returning home.

If there was no chance, then so be it, but to step back because of fear when there was a chance to step towards eternal life was not Roger.

What's more, in Roger's eyes, he wasn't without the possibility of success.

He used the Time Plague method to anchor himself. Although it couldn't be said to be foolproof, it could give him a few more points of success.

13%, this was the probability that Roger estimated he would walk the path of immortality.

This was already quite high.

As for what would happen if he failed?

Failure was just failure.

Roger had already exhausted all his strength. He would fight to the very end, until death arrived. That was enough for Roger.

However.

Although he had no attachments in this world, he still had some debts of gratitude to repay. Before death arrived, Roger would use his own way to settle these “debts.”
