Hogwarts: Wizards of Eternity
#18 - The Dark Lord's Gaze
Although Roger didn't like lies, he understood the most basic principle of concealing his abilities.
This wasn't deception, just telling half the story.
When still weak, it was best to avoid flaunting one's wealth and talents.
The specific details of his path were best known to as few people as possible.
Roger only told Professor McGonagall that he planned to use his ability to foresee crises to cooperate with Transfiguration to modify his own life and extend his lifespan.
As for the fact that his crisis prediction was a permanent ability that he could use at will, rather than the kind that was sometimes effective and sometimes not, or required specific conditions to use, there was no need to elaborate.
But even so, it was enough to shock Professor McGonagall!
How long had it been since he borrowed her books? He had only been at Hogwarts for a few days, and he had already gone so far on the path of magic?!
Although, judging from the situation Roger revealed, the number of spells he had mastered was still greatly insufficient, his thinking was not a problem as far as the goal of longevity was concerned.
However…
"If you just want to extend your lifespan, with your ability, it is possible to go down this road, but I remember, what you want is immortality?" Professor McGonagall hadn't forgotten a word Roger had said to her.
"Yes." Roger nodded.
"Longevity and immortality seem similar, but they are completely different levels of concepts, just like paramecium and wizards are both carbon-based organisms according to Muggle science." As a Transfiguration master and former Ministry of Magic civil servant, Professor McGonagall's understanding of Muggle theories was not in-depth, but she was not unfamiliar with them either.
"Transfiguration is the magic of changing matter, but life is not only composed of matter."
Roger understood Professor McGonagall's subtext. In the world of magic, the soul was also a part of life, not to mention the mysterious 'mind' that was as mysterious as magic, or even more so.
Even if Roger could achieve physical immortality, what if the soul had problems under the erosion of time?
"I understand what you're saying, Professor. But it's impossible to get fat in one bite. Although my ultimate goal is immortality, I have to take it step by step."
"Among the many components of life, the most fragile is our body. Let's solve the problem of the lifespan of the body first, and then deal with the other problems step by step." Roger replied very rationally.
As soon as Roger finished speaking, Professor McGonagall, who had just been very serious, raised a smile at the corner of her mouth. There was actually a small test in her previous words, and Roger passed it perfectly.
The most taboo thing about pursuing the continuation of life is being eager for quick success and instant benefits.
Not wanting to die was an idea that many wizards had.
Whether it was her teaching career or the years she worked in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, she had seen too many people who were impatient and took detours. They were clearly trying to extend their lives, but ended up not living as long as ordinary people.
Just like many Muggles, they clearly went to make money in order to live a happy life, but they always gradually forgot why they started, and went astray.
Now, Professor McGonagall believed that Roger was a person who could control his desires and deserved more of her trust.
Professor McGonagall knew that Roger was a good person, but a good person was not equal to being able to resist temptation.
Just like the so-called "getting bad when you have money", many people seem good, but it's possible that they just don't have the opportunity to become bad.
Only being able to be a good person is different from choosing to be a good person.
So, only at this moment did she decide to give that thing to Roger Virgil.
"I hope you can always remember your original intention at this moment." While saying this, Professor McGonagall handed a piece of paper to Roger.
Seeing that piece of paper, Roger's eyes lit up immediately.
He had originally come here just to ask Professor McGonagall to verify whether his ideas needed to be checked and filled in.
He didn't expect to have an unexpected gain!
This piece of paper was like a timely rain for Roger now!
[Hogwarts Library, Professor Restricted Book Area Borrowing Slip]
And it was a 'blank' slip that didn't have a book title and could be used to borrow any book!
In the Hogwarts Library, in addition to general books and frequently updated external academic journals, there were also the restricted books that students were not allowed to read.
The books there were not necessarily of higher academic value than other books in the library, but they were all dangerous and profound spells and magic that were not suitable for students to come into contact with.
And what Roger needed, all kinds of body modification materials and documents, were mostly in the restricted area.
…Not to mention the danger, the various body modification experiments in the early days of wizarding civilization were inherently full of blood and absurdity, and violated ethics, and the mental impact on young wizards was immeasurable!
Professor McGonagall also made this decision because Roger had special experiences, a firm will, and could stick to his original intentions.
However, Professor McGonagall still left an insurance policy: "Black magic is not allowed to be borrowed. The book titles you borrow will be recorded with Mrs. Pince, and I will go and check them from time to time."
"Don't worry." Roger said with a smile. He knew what McGonagall was worried about.
He knew the dangers of dark magic. He had no interest in emotional magic. That was not what he was pursuing, the true path to the heavens!

.
.
"Harry, don't you think those two are a bit strange?" After class, on the way back to the dormitory, Ron looked at the friend beside him.
"Who?" Harry Potter knew that it was difficult for his friend to calm down. He would always find ways to relieve his boredom, which was generally expressed as complaining about the various things he encountered that day.
"Of course, it's the two 'Ravenclaws' in our Gryffindor first year!"
"One is arrogant, looking down on everyone, and wants to show off how much she knows in every class… tsk." Ron curled his lips.
"The other always looks like he's thinking about something. In almost all magic-related course operations, he can always cast spells successfully in one go."
"But he never gets too close to anyone, and no one can ask him out to play."
Speaking of this, Ron paused for a moment: "And these two people always soak in the library whenever they have free time."
"I heard from his roommate that even when he returns to the dormitory, he never takes his eyes off the book until the lights go out… Oh, Merlin's beard." Ron really couldn't understand how there could be such a person, or rather, why such a person would come to Gryffindor instead of Ravenclaw.
"Ron!" Harry frowned, "Don't talk bad about others behind their backs… Actually, they are all nice people."
Although he didn't mention his name, he knew who Ron was talking about.
Hermione Granger and Roger Virgil.
Harry raised his hand and pushed his glasses up, and said, "Did you see it?"
"What?" Ron was a little confused.
"My lens."
"It's been cracked all the time. Hermione noticed it the day before yesterday, and she took the initiative to help me fix it with the Repairing Charm."
"Also." Harry turned to look at Ron, his tone serious.
"In Potions class, Roger helped Neville and prevented a potion accident from happening, protecting the people around him. They are all good people. You shouldn't say that about them just because they are different from everyone in some ways!" Harry Potter was a child who had lived with relatives since he was a child, had no friends, and was always bullied.
He cherished the fact that he finally had a friend.
So he didn't want his only close friend to become someone similar to his cousin Dudley Dursley!
In a group, saying that others are strange is often the beginning of isolation and bullying, and Harry Potter is very sensitive to this.
"I…" Seeing Harry's serious expression, Ron was a little at a loss.
But someone helped him out.
"Two, two students, students should love each other…" A stuttering voice sounded from the two of them, interrupting the atmosphere between them.
Without looking back at the big turban, the pungent smell of garlic had already revealed the identity of the person.
Professor Quirrell, the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor who was rumored to be avoiding vampires!
"Professor Quirrell." Harry and the two saluted.
And Quirrell came to Harry, naturally not for the harmony between students, he had another purpose for this trip.
"I heard, you, are talking about, Roger, classmate."
"I am a little curious about him, can you tell me what you students think of him?" Professor Quirrell's eyes were meaningful.
Ten years ago, temporarily withdrew from the stage of history in the prophecy, and was very interested in arithmancy during his time at Hogwarts, even making the Horcruxes into '7' which had very mysterious meanings.
How could this Dark Lord not be interested in a legendary powerful seer?!
