Hogwarts: Wizards of Eternity
#20 - The first step on the path to longevity
If Voldemort, with his profound understanding of magic, saw Roger as an absolute 'monster' due to his immense power,
then to the average student, Roger was simply a 'weirdo'.
He was always polite and composed, making anyone feel comfortable when chatting with him.
In class, he could cast almost any spell quickly and masterfully, demonstrating impressive speed and skill.
He maintained a slight aloofness, never becoming too close or playful with anyone.
He remained outside the group, always reading and scribbling incomprehensible things in his notebook, possessing a 'prophet-like' air of mystery mixed with a touch of madness.
Roger was an extremely contradictory existence in the eyes of many ordinary students.
However, one thing was certain.
No one dared to provoke him.
Especially after a few Slytherins, either unaware of the consequences, poorly informed, or simply lacking common sense, picked a fight with Roger and were turned into 'balloons' with the Levitation Charm, floating around him for hours, thoroughly humiliated.
Beneath his politeness, Roger was also someone who wasn't afraid to act.
After receiving the answer 'mysterious and powerful, and a good person who protects his companions' from Harry Potter, Quirrell wasn't satisfied.
He wasn't interested in these superficial impressions but sought deeper secrets.
"I heard that Roger is researching things related to immortality?" Quirrell asked seemingly casually.
When Roger spoke to him about this, it was as if he were talking about something as trivial as eating fried chicken tonight.
Either he didn't think it needed to be kept secret, or he was subtly testing people with his words.
Quirrell wanted to subtly probe Harry about it.
"Um… yes, there is such a thing," Harry said calmly after thinking for a moment.
Having grown up in a Muggle family, Harry didn't see anything wrong with seeking immortality.
Muggle wizarding stories often featured old wizards who had lived for a very long time.
Even the Chocolate Frog cards he collected on the Hogwarts Express listed information about Headmaster Dumbledore.
He was an old wizard over 100 years old!
So, in Harry's eyes, a wizard's lifespan should be very long, and wanting it to be even longer wasn't strange.
"He even asked me if I was interested, but I think Wizard's Chess is more fun."
Hogwarts classes didn't have assigned seating; students could freely choose where to sit.
Sometimes, Harry would sit next to Roger during class.
He'd sneak peeks at Roger's densely written notes filled with annotations, and the sight of those notes made Harry's spine tingle.
Roger had thought Harry was interested in it… Immortality was an extremely long road, and longevity was only a negligible first step on the path to immortality.
Roger wouldn't mind having someone travel this difficult road with him, but unfortunately, Harry declined.
"He seemed to have asked Neville too?" Harry Potter added uncertainly.
Quirrell nodded.
Okay, no need to ask any further.
This prophet was just a monster who had been thinking about researching immortality since he was 11, not playing the riddle-speaking game that seers usually played.
Completely relieved, Quirrell gave Harry Potter a meaningful look before turning and leaving.
He would now focus most of his energy on obtaining the Philosopher's Stone.
He would only maintain a basic level of vigilance regarding Roger.
And, if the opportunity arose, it would be even better to get rid of Harry Potter for his master.
…In the wizarding world, prophecy wasn't just the rambling of a fortune-teller; it possessed real power.
After a prophecy was made, a ritual-like power would be generated, transforming into something like 'destiny'.
If it wasn't changed but left alone or even encouraged, this power would play a terrifying role at a crucial moment after a long time.
Whether forced or willing, he was already on the Dark Lord's pirate ship and couldn't get off.
Eliminating Harry Potter while he was weak could not only potentially increase his status in the Dark Lord's eyes but also prevent the Dark Lord from failing again at the hands of the Boy Who Lived, which would implicate him as well.
Professor Quirrell suppressed his chaotic and struggling heart, completely regarding the Dark Lord as his master.
As he walked away from Harry, a deep… murderous intent flashed in his eyes!
And Voldemort, hidden behind the turban, flashed a sneer.
It was unclear who it was directed at.
"Hiss!" Harry suddenly gasped.
"Harry, what's wrong?" Hearing Harry's noise, Ron quickly approached with concern.
Ron was born into a large family with seven children, and he was someone who had always been overlooked at home and didn't have many friends.
He cherished his friendship with Harry.
"It's nothing, just a bit of a headache." Being cared for by a friend warmed Harry's heart, and even the sudden pain from the scar on his head seemed to lessen.
Wait.
The last time his scar hurt, it seemed to be…
Harry Potter looked around.
Sure enough, in the distance behind him, he saw Snape's black robes, his aura dark and repulsive.
Although he didn't like Snape, Harry Potter wouldn't disrespect a professor to his face, nor did he think accusing a professor without evidence was a wise decision as a student.
So, Harry Potter's expression only changed slightly, and after bowing to the Potions professor, he grabbed Ron's sleeve and quickly turned to leave.
Snape remained silent the entire time, staring at Harry like a bat in the shadows.
Only after Quirrell's figure completely disappeared from the corner of his eye, and Harry's figure also disappeared from his pupils, did Severus Snape withdraw his gaze, which had been quietly watching the two for a long time.
He turned and walked in the direction where Professor Quirrell's figure had disappeared.
.
.
.
Roger was unaware that a small incident related to him had just occurred in another corner of Hogwarts.
Even if he knew, he wouldn't care at all.
At this moment, Roger had focused all his energy on his new magical experiment.
After a long period of theoretical design,
discussions on technical details with many professors, and verification with Transfiguration Master McGonagall,
the magical development related to his pursuit of immortality could finally begin with the first practical operation!
"I didn't expect these things I bought just in case would actually come in handy."
Roger took out a package from his suitcase that was as tall as a computer case but narrower.
"Mitsubishi blood collection needles."
"Glass slides."
Roger sorted the items after opening the package.
"And this, the most important thing… a microscope!"
With everything prepared, Roger waved his wand.
Let the miracle unfold… Transfiguration!!
