Hogwarts: Wizards of Eternity
#43 - The world through the eyes of conspiracy theorists
In 1991, Cornelius Fudge, the Minister for Magic at this time, had only been in office for two years. He hadn't yet completed the exchange of favors with the various large and small families and powerful wizards in his departments, nor had he established his own banner.
Now, he needed Dumbledore, this big shot, to support him in all aspects.
So, upon receiving the message from Hogwarts, he immediately rushed over with a beaming smile and an amiable demeanor.
One couldn't tell at all that in a few years, when his power would grow and he would believe Dumbledore to be an orderly person unwilling to overturn the table, he would treat Dumbledore with contempt, shouting at him as if 'a gentleman can be deceived through propriety'.
As the saying goes, he who takes is beholden. With so many things he needed from others, Minister for Magic Fudge immediately stated, in response to the matter relayed by Professor McGonagall, that he would do his best to promote the control of Boggarts, block relevant information, and monitor any possible clues.
However, the Director of the Department of Mysteries, who came to Hogwarts with Fudge, was not so friendly. He tried to pry out more information.
But under Professor McGonagall's calm response, he didn't get anything good.
Although this incident was strictly speaking, not low in danger, it was nipped in the bud and did not cause much disturbance. It was only a simple report to the Ministry of Magic, so even if the Department of Mysteries wanted to do something, they had no grounds to do so.
The head of the Department of Mysteries, having gained nothing, was dragged away from Hogwarts by Minister for Magic Fudge.
On the way…
"Fudge, this matter is not a simple trifle. Are you doing your duty as Minister for Magic by doing this?" The head of the Department of Mysteries frowned, his tone not very polite to the Minister for Magic in his anger.
"Of course, I know this is not a trifle. I'm not blind, nor am I stupid," Fudge retorted irritably.
"Then you…"
Fudge interrupted him: "Then what do you want to do?"
"The handling of this matter is very inconsistent with the style of McGonagall and Dumbledore." Professor McGonagall used to work in the Ministry of Magic, and Fudge knew a little about her. As for Dumbledore, his biggest backer at the moment, he naturally studied him every day.
"Snape? Flitwick? Sprout?" Fudge listed the names of the other three heads of house besides Gryffindor.
"Also inconsistent."
"So… do you remember that child who stood silently behind her when we spoke with McGonagall?"
"That Seer?" As a member of the Department of Mysteries, he certainly couldn't miss those wizards who were extremely different from ordinary people. Many gifted people had special files in the Department of Mysteries.
They studied extraordinary methods, so naturally they needed extraordinary people. They had been focusing on such existences.
"Well, although your Department of Mysteries also has his file, some confidential information cannot be seen without my approval as Minister."
"Now, let me ask you, why didn't the magical communities in the Middle East try to capture a Seer who used the power of prophecy to wreak havoc on the battlefield during the Gulf War? Do you know how difficult it is to suppress the news that an 11-year-old child broke through the lines of a modern army?"
"Is it really just because of infighting? Couldn't they have captured the person first and then infight later, instead of letting a Seer run amok on the battlefield?" Fudge's mouth revealed a meaningful smile.
"…Are we talking about the Fear Demon?" The head of the Department of Mysteries was a little puzzled.
"Because these two things are highly related." Seeing that the other party's brain seemed to not have turned the corner, Fudge didn't speak in riddles anymore.
Riddles are meaningless if the other person doesn't even have the intention to guess.
"Have you read 'Ritual Magic is Far More Than Blood Sacrifice'?"
"Of course, that book plays an important role in the establishment of modern magic. Its author verified many key theories. Although it is a book from hundreds of years ago, members of the Department of Mysteries have basically read it."
This book has a position in the wizarding world somewhat like 'The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art' in the Han Dynasty. Although modern people rarely read it, researchers in related fields generally would be curious to flip through it.
"Ritual magic is everywhere. It doesn't even need to arrange anything. Just people's 'belief' can forge an infinitely vast ritual that affects everyone in the world…" Fudge softly recited a passage from the preface of that book.
"That pantheon has nearly 4 billion believers in total. Just tens of millions of people's 'belief' could forge a large number of holy artifacts in ancient times. Do you think no wizards would have that idea?"
The person from the Department of Mysteries snorted coldly: "Impossible. No one can do it by borrowing that kind of power."
If the power of faith was really that easy to use, wizards themselves would have used the convenience of magic to create churches.
Unlike simple belief, the power of faith is not only difficult to use, but also… toxic!
Even if it is cast into alchemical items, it may cause countless side effects, let alone…
Wait!
He suddenly realized what Fudge was talking about after going around in such a big circle!
"Understood, right? A large amount of 'belief' will naturally gather powerful forces. That little Seer, under the guise of a religious prophet, has been creating 'miracles' all the way. During the Gulf War, whether it was the enemy or the ally, a large amount of 'faith' would be concentrated on him."
"He is also a wizard with magic power, and should be more easily affected, but no strange phenomenon has occurred."
"That's not the kind of 'hope' that Harry Potter has, but a more extreme and larger amount of 'faith'."
"Sometimes, the absence of abnormality is the biggest abnormality!"
Speaking of this, Fudge paused: "Although I am not a powerful wizard, sitting in the position of Minister for Magic, I can access a lot of information."
"Generally speaking, there are three possibilities for his situation. One is that the abnormality in him is still accumulating, the second is that he himself has a special physique that can avoid some adverse effects… but it is uncertain whether he will avoid the benefits at the same time as avoiding the effects."
"And the last possibility is that his existence itself is a more terrifying abnormality than those beliefs."
"Turning the topic back, if he is the first or third possibility, then this Seer is a nuclear bomb that may explode at any time. And in the second case, he will become an important sample for the study of the power of 'faith'."
Minister for Magic Fudge stopped and turned his head to look at the person from the Department of Mysteries with a serious expression: "Take the above as a premise."
"Now, rethink it again. Why didn't the wizards in the Middle East capture this little Seer? Why did Dumbledore express his support for innocence in the Wizengamot trial and let him enter Hogwarts? Why have the wizards in the Middle East been making trouble recently, and why is Dumbledore not in England now, but has personally gone there?"
"And as for the matter of the Fear Demon, why is Hogwarts' handling style different from before?"
Because Fudge, who currently has no power in his hands, has the filter of a subordinate looking up to a superior, an ordinary wizard looking at a powerful wizard, towards Dumbledore.
So, he completely did not consider the possibility that Dumbledore had a sense of compassion for Roger because of his past painful experiences, and that Dumbledore himself was a kind and benevolent elder who was especially tolerant of children.
Fudge, who likes to impose his own way of thinking on others, sees everything as a conspiracy. Fudge patted the man next to him on the shoulder and said: "So, don't manage everything, don't get to the bottom of everything."
"When the water is too deep, you have to learn to turn a blind eye…" Fudge lectured on his survival wisdom.
