Hollywood starts with a broker
#42 - If you don't learn, you'll suffer.
Los Angeles, Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, a grand Christmas ball was being held here;
Hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, it was a gathering of celebrities, stars, singers, fashion models, entertainment company executives, and so on.
Aaron Anderson also appeared at the scene with Nicole Kidman!
The just-announced nominations for the 47th Annual Golden Globe Awards for Film and Television in 1989 revealed that independent distributor Miramax had received several nominations for three of its films:
Giuseppe Tornatore's "Cinema Paradiso" had just been nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film;
Steven Soderbergh's "Sex, Lies, and Videotape" was nominated for Best Actress in a Drama, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Screenplay;
And another film, "My Left Foot," was also nominated for Best Actor in a Drama and Best Supporting Actress!
"This is the Christmas party held by the organizers of the Golden Globe Awards, a warm-up for the Golden Globe Awards dinner in late January next year," Aaron reminded Nicole Kidman beside him!
After all, the organizer of the American Golden Globe Awards for Film and Television is the Foreign Press Association.
"Yes, I know that. Is that Meg Ryan?" Nicole Kidman pointed to a blonde woman surrounded by stars.
Aaron looked over and said, "That's her. 'When Harry Met Sally...' grossed over $92 million in North America, with a production cost of only $16 million;"
"This movie has been nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Actor and Actress – Musical or Comedy, Best Director, and Best Screenplay!"
"See that? What does it mean to become famous overnight? This is it!"
Meg Ryan's blonde hair, blue eyes, and sweet smile were deeply rooted in people's hearts, and the title of "America's Sweetheart" followed.
Afterward, Aaron looked at Julia Roberts not far away, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for "Steel Magnolias";
Thinking of the grand occasion after the release of "Pretty Woman" next spring, Aaron also felt sorry for CAA. Richard Lovett joined ICM, mainly because of Warren Beatty!
Nicole Kidman whispered, "Aaron, I saw director Peter Weir. I met him in Australia before."
"Then go say hello. His film 'Dead Poets Society' has been nominated for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Actor – Drama, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. The box office is also gratifying, with $95 million in North America, $140 million overseas, and a global box office of $235 million;"
"It's a double harvest of word-of-mouth and box office. Along with Oliver Stone's 'Born on the Fourth of July,' starring Tom Cruise, it's the hottest contender for the Oscars!"
Aaron Anderson put his arm around Nicole's waist, but "Born on the Fourth of July" had just been released and received extremely high praise.
"Mr. Peter Weir is currently the most famous director in Australia!"
The success of "Dead Poets Society" made Peter Weir's fame grow exponentially.
Aaron smiled. Foreign directors like to use actors from their own countries, so it's normal for Nicole Kidman to be favored by Peter Weir.
Soon, the two found Peter Weir and started talking!
However, Aaron Anderson left the conversation first because he ran into Paula Wagner.
"How is it? After leaving CAA, do you feel anything?" Paula Wagner asked.
Independent distributor Miramax has really shown its face this year, and Aaron Anderson's contribution cannot be erased.
"I don't feel anything. The first film produced by Dawn Pictures, 'Phone Booth,' is being edited;"
"All that's needed is to find a North American distributor!"
Aaron smiled and clinked glasses with Paula Wagner.
"Doesn't Miramax want to distribute it for you?"
Aaron shook his head, "I have high expectations for 'Phone Booth.' Miramax's conditions can't satisfy me."
"Wow, you really are something," Paula Wagner exclaimed directly.
Miramax's distribution of "Sex, Lies, and Videotape" grossed $24 million, with profits exceeding $10 million;
The cost of "Phone Booth" is about the same as "Sex, Lies, and Videotape," so are your expectations even higher?
"Are you really that confident?" Paula Wagner couldn't underestimate him.
Aaron Anderson smiled and pointed to his eyes, "These eyes of mine are the eyes of God!"
Paula Wagner also laughed, "Are you trying to say you're a Hollywood genius?"
"By the way, the other day, I went to the theater to see Tom's 'Born on the Fourth of July.' Tom's image-destroying performance was pretty good;"
"When the time comes, getting him a nomination for the Oscar for Best Actor shouldn't be a problem!"
Aaron changed the subject. Now "Born on the Fourth of July" has received several Golden Globe nominations, including Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Actor – Drama, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Original Score, competing head-to-head with "Dead Poets Society";
But unfortunately, the influence of the Golden Globe Awards is still far from that of the Oscars.
"Don't you think Tom has a good chance of winning the Oscar for Best Actor?"
No errors, one issue, one hair, one inside, one appearance, one at a time, look!
Aaron shook his head, "It's hard to say. The Golden Globes and the Oscars are different. The Oscars have never liked pretty actors;"
"Besides, have you seen Miramax's PR tactics? They're truly shameless!"
The Golden Globes value star influence more, but the Oscars don't care much about individual star achievements. The Academy's judges are all old-school Hollywood people;
In order to show their importance, in addition to acting skills, it is necessary to conduct public relations with them, and political factors are essential.
Paula Wagner certainly has public relations. Tom Cruise's biggest competitor, she has always believed, is Robin Williams from "Dead Poets Society!"
"Are you talking about Daniel Day-Lewis in 'My Left Foot'?"
"My Left Foot" is distributed by Miramax and has also been nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Drama!
For Best Motion Picture – Drama, "My Left Foot" certainly can't compare to "Born on the Fourth of July." The anti-war core is very deterrent.
"Yes, I've contacted Miramax several times before, and they even had Daniel Day-Lewis go to Washington, D.C., to attend a new round of proposals for the 'Americans with Disabilities Act' in Congress;"
"How many of the Oscar judges have connections with Washington? I don't need to say more, right?"
"There are also phone bombings of judges, sending movie videotapes, and so on. They can be said to be using all kinds of methods!"
Aaron smiled. As an agent, Paula Wagner really doesn't have many ways to deal with it;
This requires the cooperation of the film company. The distribution company for "Born on the Fourth of July" is Universal Pictures. Its ability is certainly unquestionable, but it definitely values the Best Picture award more!
The Oscars like to divide the cake. If they give you both Best Picture and Best Director, it's unlikely that they'll give you the Best Actor and Actress acting awards again.
"It seems that you've learned a lot in the past year or so," Paula Wagner certainly hopes that Tom Cruise will win the award, so that his commercial value will be even higher.
"In a place like Hollywood, you can easily suffer if you don't understand some things!"
As Aaron spoke, he suddenly saw Warren Beatty entering the hall with a woman, talking happily…
