Just because the modern era has so many achievements, doesn't mean they have discovered everything in the world. Now and then, insect species and new animals are discovered all over the world. Sometimes, new sea animals also emerge, and other times, it's new plants that are discovered, alongside new chemicals and elements that get added to the Periodic Table. If Mankind knew everything already, don't you think they would have long gone into the Galactic era? Do you think they would've successfully created Teleportation devices and even flying vehicles and ships that could travel at the speed of light? All in all, it was not so unacceptable to speculate that it should be an unknown species causing havoc down below.
