Before I knew it, it was the end of the month, and the day of Sara’s birthday.

“Can I open it?”

 

“‘Of course.’

 

With a happy expression on her face, Sara gently untied the ribbon wrapped around the box.

 

“It’s a necklace. …”

 

“Yes.”

 

Sara picked up the necklace and stared at it.

 

“It’s a garnet.”

 

“I know.”

 

“Yes, because it’s my birthstone!”

 

The expression on her face was very gentle, as if she was truly happy.

 

“You took the trouble to find it! Nii-san, please put it on me.”

 

When she said that, Sara lifted her hair.

 

“Here you go.”

 

I took the necklace from Sara and gently put it around her neck.

 

“Thank you! It’s the best birthday ever!”

 

Sara said with an angelic smile on her face.

 

“Sara, me and Sara are step siblings. So, you know, we can get married and stuff. From now on, won’t you stay by my side not as my sister, but as my girlfriend? I love you, Sara.”

 

I poured out all my feelings to Sara.

Sara said this as she took out my published book from her bag.

 

I thought her smile was the most beautiful in the world.
